powerslave is really good.

any other games like it from that time?
fps games, but with fun traversal and abilities?

Try Hexen and Shadow Warrior.

The DOS version of Powerslave is incredibly underrated.
It has some of the best level design I've seen in Doom-era FPS, and it's got great atmosphere and good gameplay too.

I think it didn't catch up because they released it too late. They had it pretty much finished almost a year before release but they sat on it until they had the Saturn version released.

It would already have been slightly technically inferior had they released it one year before, because they were stuck with an older version of Build, so by the end of 1996, it had become even more so, even the full 3D console version of the game with its Quake-like architecture and layouts.

I actually can't think of many retro FPS with that "traversal" feeling, maybe Terminator Future Shock?

BTW - you should make sure you're playing the retail version of either Powerslave (dated december 04 1996) or Exhumed (March 19 1997) and that you have music.
There are bad rips and (full) beta versions going around warez sites.
Preferably used the Exhumed version as a couple of glitches got fixed (for instances some tracks don't loop well on Powerslave)

Was this game named after the Iron Maiden album? Both the game and the title track have an Egyptian theme

The fact that they had to change the name in PAL and Japan territories should give you a clue

Hm no, interviews of the devs say the European publisher didn't like the name and gave them no choice.

The Jap publisher did the same and called it Seireki 1999: Pharoh No Fukkatsu.

I remember some interview asking the question, but I don't remember the answer. It's somewhere in the links in the 2nd post here:

Cybermage from Origin. You use both magic spells and scifi-ish weapons.

The Playstation version is a worse version of the Saturn game.
Only meaningfull thing it does better are the Team Dolls.

Still worth playing after the Saturn version because of the new/changed levels though.

It is also worth noting that effort was put into the PAL conversion of the Saturn version.
It runs at the intended speed (only a few timing differences are present, which make the game slightly harder).
The PAL Playstation version however runs slower than its NTSC counterparts.

So if you live in PAL territory, Saturn is definitely the best choice.
