The alignments in SMT aren't moral. The lawful route can arguably be more 'evil' in many instances.

I think Kain in Blood Omen counts. He's passed off as an 'anti hero', but he's irredeemably sadistic.

Not necessarily a good game, just different from the rest of the series. I personally did not enjoy IV that much.

It's my favorite and I believe it's the best the series has to offer together with 8, but it's not for everyone, it is by far one of the most innovative games in the genre, especially for its time.
It is not without flaws though, and as much as I enjoy it, it tends to be way too strict in some parts and it's basically more of a giant puzzle game than a standard rpg.

It is an RPG from 1981 and it shows. There have been huge improvements to the genre (and to the specific series) over the years and there is no reason to start a 1. A lot of players curious about there series could get discouraged if they did so.

I would maybe start with 6 & 7, and then if you are really interested in the roots of the franchise you can go back and run 1-3.
