The very, very, very, very short version is that a .wad is basically a single folder, while a .pk3 is basically a renamed .zip and can have multiple subfolders, like /sprites, /textures, /graphics, /sounds, etc.

Other benefits include smaller filesize and much reduced memory consumption during play, as well as removing the eight-character limit on a lot of things.

I dunno if you'll see this but I threw up a bot deathmatch server and noticed that after awhile the flame gun stopped being able to fire even when there was plenty of ammo. For awhile I was only able to have 1 shot on screen at a time and then later I wasn't able to fire at all. Other weapons seemed to all work fine though. And no crashes!

Yeah, I am aware of it. The issue is that right now when you fire it stocks you with a "Flame Debug" item, that has a max of 2. if you have 2 you can't fire anymore. When the flame projectile dies, it takes one away. The issue is that if you fire the projectile OUTSIDE of the map, it doesn't die, it merely gets removed. I couldn't figure out a way to fix it entirely, but every 4 seconds or so it takes 2 of those items away.

I think I'm just gonna make it do that when you bring the weapon up, since the time it takes for you to swap weapons twice is long enough that it doesn't break the 2 shot limit meaningfully.

If Kart codeguy is still around I have a suggestion

I'm the one who's been harping on road rash melee this whole time and I was thinking: a lot of people raised a valid point that it would create a lot of complexity for: mappers, the engine, and controls re: the players themselves. Not to mention it would require spriteguy to create left and right attacking animations for characters (can't mirror them. See: Cyberdemon).

But then, the ramming physics demonstration got me thinking. Perhaps side attacking can be accomplished simply by side-ramming, and "melee" powerups can have a half-side-to-front AE cone, where the character just does his generic "using an item" animation and then an effect, like a chainsaw circling around the sides and in front of the character, happens. It would add much needed ease-of-use to the idea, from all angles: implementation to player use.

What do you guys think?

Dunno if the Doomtra guy is around, but I found a bug. If you shoot the flamegun and the shots go into the sky, the gun becomes unusable. Pretty sure there's a flag that'll make it explode when it hits the sky rather than disappear, that should fix it.

Fucking this, the fact that dodging behind cover is the only way to play those games, and that it's essentially a mechanic that has you velcro yourself against a wall, I'll take cover freely thank you, on my own volition.

If there's a bunch of fireballs heading my way, I'll throw myself behind cover, if there's no room to dodge them, or I'll throw myself into a ditch or something like that, during which I'd reload (if I'm playing that kind of .wad).

I think what makes Doom fun is that the enemies have no fear or sense of self-preservation, none at all.
They see you, and they head straight for you, they don't dodge or go for cover, their only goal in life is to kill YOU, they don't care if they get hurt.
This makes the game so much more intense.

Oh, and also that the enemies are varied, ALL of the monsters are cool, some of them are even imposing, or even frightening.

Rolled this thing from 1996. As to be expected from the time period, it's a buggy mess, with monsters in the floor, texture misalignments everywhere, and shit for detail. The map itself is really long and involves a lot of backtracking, but it's not annoyingly bad. What are annoyingly bad are the sound replacements. They range from hardly acceptable to shitty, with the monster sounds being the worst of them. There was a problem with the end because I'd skipped killing a mancubus earlier in the map, so I couldn't proceed until I killed it. Overall I'd give this a 3/5. It's pretty good for its time, but it's certainly no Memento Mori.

I have kind of a weird question.

The last time I played Doom was many, many years ago, and as far as I understand, it did not let you aim with the mouse or move up and down. Basically left right, back and forth, and jumping.

For some reason, this is the only FPS that does not make me nauseous. Any other game ever that has mouse look or camera/movement as two separate things will make my stomach churn and I'll huff all over the place.

Bind a key to change your colour. Whenever you use the corridors, change your colour. Whenever you make a kill, change your colour.

Hang around with innocents, group them together then gas them, make sure you have a CLEAR escape route and they do not.

Shotgun traps behind doors is a sure-fire way to get kills.

Using fake stims is a good way to hurt your prey. Place them where normal stims would spawn, or behind doors or in narrow corridors - essentially, they are a mini bertholite.

Make sure you always have 3 small medical packs whenever you're going to make a kill, you never know when you're going to need them.

Backstabs are a great way to get kills, though they don't always register when the prey is running away.

If someone's running away, don't pursue them, as they almost always lead you to into a group of innocents, then you get your shit kicked in.

You can get hurt by your own bertholite and shotgun traps so remember where you dropped 'em.

Damocles+Bk13 will probably replace Black Crow as Pistol+Fists combo, Arrancadora is Chainsaw; its slow but hits harder also the hit happens when hammer head is in the middle of screen so requires a bit of timing (frame rate in gif and in game are not same, it drops faster with over head but starts slow, swings slightly slower but recovery is faster... etc.).

Next is sounds and other unimportant things... but that's a tale for another night.
