What is positively the most essential and most complete Dragon Quest experience??? Can you give me a brief lowdown?

Messing around with DQ7 after the beating the game and I have some plot questions.

Is Faraday's past ever expanded on? Does it have anything to do with why they were removed by Orgodemir? Why can't I visit Faraday as part of the victory tour if the game just resets to before the final boss anyways? What was the deal with the Blood Rubies? What's the deal with this mirror thing I found in Orgodemir's palace? Why did they show me random monsters like the cloak and devil when going to Buccanham's past?

Those are the immediate concerns I have, and I don't see how the game is going to answer those, because I don't see a lot of post game wiggle room beyond the bonus dungeon stuff.

I'd recommend one of the DS SNES remake trilogy (IV-VI) first.

Truthfully, the snes and gbc versions are pretty much identical minus the obvious graphic and sound differences.

Go with SNES if you prefer great visuals and sound, go with GBC if you have nostalgia for the Gameboy era. The GBC version arguably feels the least clunky since all the actions can be done with the A button, and because of the faster walking speed, so there's that, too.

The thing about DQIII in particular is that the original NES version still holds up as a great NES rpg (even if it's extremely clunky,) and the SNES remake feels like an above average SNES rpg, but the GBC demake of the SNES remake is easily the best traditional Rpg on the GBC. It's worth playing that version if you were ever really into your Gameboy.I

The best fights in Dragon Quest games are usually the final bosses and bonus bosses. So yeah, I would say go for it. Just find something to listen or watch while you're doing it. Shouldn't be outrageously long unless you need to job grind to the max. If you have another game that you're dying to play though, you should probably just play that first, and then come back later when you've got nothing else to play.

I think 3 was the pinnacle of the franchise to be honest. I mean 8's characters and stuff were neat, but the battle system had barely evolved even by then.

The over world music in 1 is still the best. Humble yet epic... Actually I think the whole game fits that description, which made it very endearing despite how grindy it gets.

2 is okay but forces you to play with premade characters. It feels about twice as long as the first one. There is a boat this time, wee.

3 lets you choose your own party members and switch them out mid-adventure with a bunch of classes to choose from.

4 is compromised of 'episodes' where you play as 1 or 2 characters at a time, until they all eventually meet up with the hero. You even play as a store owner in one section. It was a fun twist on the usual formula.

5 had you start off as a kid and then grow up and play as an adult with your own kids in your party. Also I THINK you could capture the monsters and add them to your party. It was cute. Also slavery.

I had gotten several hours into a fan translation of 6, but it didn't really stand out as something different or new for the series to me.

Haven't played 7 but I hear it's huge, and the first 3d entry in the series, much like ff7.

8 has the most well defined characters/plot I think... and crafting... and boobies. I remember it being hard as fuck in the beginning though.

I played and beat 9 for DS... I think it let you build your own team like 3, but I can't even remember... meh.

3>1>8>4/5>2/9

Play the SNES remakes if you play 1-3.
4 has a Playstation remake which looks real nice as well.

>made for children so they won't have too many complex words or sentences.

While I haven't played these games in particular, in general this is wrong. While the subject matter of children's ententertainment tends to be simple, it often uses more complex vocabulary than day to day conversation or even adult literature (sorce: worked in early education for a few years and read childish manga sometimes).

In japanese especially, you'll find that if there are furigana, some writers see that as an excuse to use obscure kanji, readings, and vocabulary. I would expect that in Dragon Quest, you would encounter lots of terms for european nobility, weapons, and religious concepts that will be unfamiliar, as well as japanese accents that will be difficult to decipher if you aren't very comfortable with the language.

But I hear that DQ 1 is pretty slow and repetitive, so a beginner should be able to get through it if they try.

>> No.3584012

>>3582923

As someone who has played through Dragon Quest I-VI in Japanese, I can tell you that Dragon Quest I-III have very basic sentence structure and vocabulary. Most of the NPCs are just there to provide direction or give a little backstory to the town you're in, or to give hints for the location of an important item or place.

Dragon Quest games aren't a bad place to start if you're learning Japanese. If you're going to play a game in Japanese, make sure it has Kanji in it. Do not fall into the trap of only playing games that only use Hiragana and Katakana. You don't even need to know any Kanji before you play a game with Kanji in it either. When I encounter Kanji I don't know, I take a picture of the screen with my phone and translate it using google translate. It's pretty simple. Radical search takes too damn long.

You really just need to make sure you know Hiragana and Katakana before you jump into one of these games. Yeah, it'll take a while, but practice makes perfect. JRPGs are usually the best video game genre for practicing language anyway

>> No.3584042

>you would encounter lots of terms for european nobility, weapons, and religious concepts
And then you learn those words as they will be more useful to you than day to day content. A word like 異端 isn't that hard to remember. Concepts like heresy shouldn't be hard to grasp for an adult.

Tengai Makyo is a series were you will find unusual readings and difficult puns but that's really more of an exception than the rule.
Furigana or obscure kanji will normally be prevented by technical hurdles on retro systems.

Are there any balancing differences between the SFC, PS2 and DS versions of Dragon Quest 5? Is one of them easier?

>> No.3585864

>>3585859
In SFC you only get three party members as opposed to PS2 and DS, so it's automatically the hardest (but there are more enemies in each battle in the remakes to compensate)

You can recruit about 40 monsters in the SFC version, while you can recruit about 70 in the PS2 and 2 more than that in the DS version.

Also you get a bag to hold all your items in the remakes. It's not in the SFC version.

Overall PS2 and DS are less difficult than the SFC version (enemies have less hp and give more gold/exp)

>> No.3587098

The newer, the easier. The original version has a three-man party all remakes have a four-man party, so it's more like a brand new game with reused plot and maps.

I'm trying to play through Dragon Quest Monsters GBC, but I'm seriously stuck at the A rank tournament. I can beat the first round easily, but then in the next round with the two grizzlies they do insane damage to my party and they have multiheal, so any damage I do to them is negated.

Would it be worth it to just start breeding boss monsters at this point if I use a guide? My only problem is that it requires so much breeding and the catch rates in this game are frustratingly low.

But again it's not absolutely vital to have that. If you're trying to min/max the game, an all female party is best, but if you're just playing the game for fun pick whatever gender characters you want.

Party order does matter in regards to who get's hit more often in battle. You want your high HP/Def characters up front.

But that's completely false. Dragon Quest XI will be on Nintendo Switch as well as PS4. And they're still making a lot of new Dragon Quest spinoff games + Dragon Quest XI for 3DS.

Chances of PS2 DQVIII getting a digital release on PSN are slim to none because Square Enix prefers to remake Dragon Quest games rather than re-releasing them.

Currently playing through DQ VI and VII simultaneously. Oh man, do these games feel samey. Heart Beat I guess only really knew one formulas, with slight variation.

Unlocking classes 20 hours into the game is a bad idea.

Anyway, I think I prefer VII so far, even though I can't tell if Maribel actually cares for the towns we save or is just there because it's not like she likes the Hero or anything.

Also VI, just defeated Mudraw in the real world, fucked up recruiting the optinal party member that turns into a monster, and just visited Alltrades to get my vocations.

I assume now its just wander the world map right? Should I focus more on Dream or Real world?

VII I'm enjoying more, at least I never wonder what the hell to do next, but I do enjoy the cast more in VI. Milly and Ashlynn are top tier waifus. Especially Ashlynn.

Forever.

95% percent of Japanese is kanji, so spend about a week or two mastering hiragana and katakana, then move onto learning basic grammar using Tae Kim's online guide. From there, you can play anything you want, as long as you're okay with relying on using jisho.org as a dictionary for the kanji. You could be playing Dragon Quest in Japanese in a month if you're really committed.

If you want to learn how to write it, it will definitely take longer. But since you're probably only going to use Japanese for reading anyway, it shouldn't take more than two weeks to memorize all the letters in both of the alphabets and their pronunciations. Additional practice will come just through repetition while you're playing games.

Hiragana and Katakana really is easy. That's why there are a lot of weeaboos who can read it with no problem. Kanji is the reason why most people stray from learning Japanese in depth. Don't stress out about learning Kanji, just look it up if you don't know it with jisho.org and eventually you'll be able to recognize it without needing to review it. It will take years to be fluent in reading and speaking, but that shouldn't stop you from playing Japanese video games to practice. Point is, you want to master Hiragana and Katakana as fast as possible and get to Kanji as soon as possible.

You'll definitely be able to learn Japanese if you're motivated. My primary motivator for learning was just how much I fucking hated the new Dragon Quest translations, and I didn't want to have to wait years and years for new games anymore. I haven't even been practicing for all that long (a little over a year now) and I can read a lot of Dragon Quest games without having to look up a majority of the kanji anymore.

Time for me to start shilling shit.

The android app Obenkyo has Tae Kim's guide in it and also has a fully customizable flashcard interface for testing yourself on hiragana, katakana, and kanji. It covers characters to romaji, romaji to characters, and drawing the characters. It's really good for working on your literacy and vocabulary, but not so much for grammar.

Tsukiji is similar to Obenkyo in that it lets you use flashcard practice, but is exclusively for kanji and has a much nicer interface than Obenkyo's barebones interface.

Human Japanese is also good, covering grammar and various aspects of Japanese social norms. It's paid but it has a lite version that covers kana and some basic grammar.

Use the first to learn them, and use the second to memorize them. What I did was pick the first row and keep that up until I got 20 right in a row, then I added the second set and did 40 in a row, then the third and did 50 in a row, and when I got to the fourth I stopped learning the first column and worked my way across until I got 50 in a row. Then I fired up the whole shebang and spent an entire hour going through every kana. Repeated this with katakana then did them both at the same time for an hour. Devote about 2 hours a day and you'll master the kana in no time flat. Mnemonics help a lot.

What's a good place to job-grind in VII's postgame? My party (Hero, Maribel, Ruff, Mervyn) is low 40s and everyone's either on or mastered one third tier job (Hero for Hero, currently going to Champion, Maribel is finishing Druid, Druid for Ruff, currently on Hero, Mervyn is finishing Champion). I managed to beat the bonus boss in 39 turns, so should I be getting levels or job experience? Jugding from your names, I'm assuming you're playing the remake. As a result, just make tablets out of monsters. No level caps there. Alternatively, anywhere in the modern world doesn't have a level cap so just job grind anywhere.

>not sure what purpose they fill in the game
Monster classes. You put one in somebody's inventory and then they can become the monster and learn shit from the monster class.

They have more of a purpose in the remake since skills you learn from jobs aren't carried over between them outside of the basic ones. So, let's say you grind to a Platinum King, class-wise. Along the way you will have a permanent Gigaslash and Omniheal. Sure, you could just have a hero, but you could have those two skills on a Champion right from the get-go or a Druid.

Really, they're more important early on. For fun, you could also make a dedicated monster character like I did, so that way you have more variety in your team's classes.

It's made obsolete by the PSP and DS versions. I mention both because they both do things a bit differently and obviously have very different styles graphically, but they';re both superior. FF4 DS is also one of those rare situations where the remake is actually more difficult than the original. I guess I should have been clearer in my question about monster classes. It felt like they interrupted the flow of the game's progression through the normal classes. I can reasonably understand that the game wants the player to have a few or everyone in the party at a third tier job by the final boss, so interrupting that progress with monster jobs seems counterproductive. Dissapointing fight honestly. Way easier than DQ4's boss, only had about 4 moves, no phase changes midfight, battle music sounded like it should have been field music instead. He was just tanky as hell and wouldn't stop healing himself.

I had the father casting either absorb magic, or attacking via Dragon Staff transformation which does alot of damage and makes him invulnerable to Blistering Fire. The Son was casting Insulate, Kabuff and rarely multihealed between attacks. Saber did literally nothing but attack. Had to switch him out twice with an Orc King to cast Kazing on a dead Son. Based Slime Knight pretty much did nothing but use the Safe Stone and occasionally full or mid heal. I hope the secret boss isnt such a pushover. Thanks for reading my blog

Thing is I've never played a DQ per se. I have every DS release (so, if I'm not mistaken, that counts for every DQ from 4 to 6 and 9?), the 3DS one and the PS2 one. I'm missing any?

I also know some NES games where re-released on SNES. What's the deal with those? Which version is better? Were all of them released on the US or EU?

Which game would you start with first? In its original platform, or it's better to emulate it?

Thank you!

>> No.3627072

>>3627058
You'd be missing the first three games, then.

The SNES remakes of 1-3 are generally better. All three of them were also remade for GBC, using the SNES versions as the base. Some people consider those even better than the SNES versions.
The SNES versions remained in Japan while the GBC versions were released internationally. There are translation patches available for the SNES versions.

IV, V, and VIII are generally recommended as starting points for the series. Other people will recomend that you start from the first game and go through the series in release order. I consider IV a great starting point myself.

As for platform, Original platform or emulation, it doesn't matter for me.

There is no SNES version of 4. The DS version is pretty much the same as the PS1.
Don't play the English DS version. They cut out half of the dialogs and rewrote the rest with barely comprehensible dialects.

>Dragon Quest series aren't actually related, doesn't them?
2 is a sequel to 1 and 3 is a prequel.
4-6 also have a bit of continuity.
1 can be fun in its simplicity and 3 is a pretty interesting game.

>what makes you think I have the time to learn japanese just to play one game?
Because you're on /vr/. Everybody here dreamed of learning Japanese one day.
You don't have to master the language before playing nor is it feasible to master a language without using it.
Asking for help where to start is a completely normal approach to a series, especially when there's multiple ports and remakes to pick from.

I do agree that newcomers to the series shouldn't be forced to learn Japanese right away. That seems like an unnecessary learning wall that will just drive people away from the series. However, I do have a message for the rest of you in this thread:

The unfortunate reality is that if you're a hardcore Dragon Quest fan and have been for a while, you absolutely should be learning Japanese by this point. Regardless of all the accent and pun localization woes. There was a four year gap in Dragon Quest games between Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 and Dragon Quest Heroes (unless you count mobile shit, which I don't), while Japan got over five new Dragon Quest games in that time.

Need I remind you that we got the inferior version of Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 six months after Joker 2 Professional was already RELEASED in Japan? And then we never got Joker 2 Professional. And we never will. There are so many spinoffs that we're never going to get now, including Rocket Slime 3, Dragon Quest Monsters 1+2 3DS, Dragon Quest Monsters Victory Road, etc. We'll be lucky if we even get Joker 3. Fan translations aren't perfectly reliable either, since Terry's Wonderland 3D took four years to come out.

Face it, you're going to miss out on lots of Dragon Quest games if you continue playing the western games. Hell, you're going to miss out on a mainline game, since Dragon Quest X is never, EVER, coming out here. And you're going to have to wait a long time for the localizations anyway (Dragon Quest VII 3DS took 3 years to localize).

There is an unfortunate stigma that you need to study Japanese for years and years before you can even touch a Japanese game, but that's completely false. Not to mention you're going to burn out if you just stare at flash cards all day. After taking a little bit of time to understand the basics of Japanese, just start playing a game you enjoy or want to play in Japanese and start learning in depth from there. It's that simple.

Maybe that anon isn't a neet that can be all day every day studying. Maybe learning japanaese is a matter of a month to you with all your free time, but years to another average-Joe anon who is lucky to have half an hour to an hour a week to get into gaming.

So I wouldn't blame for that unfortunate stigma anyone else but people llike you. If the man wants to start DQ, just tell him which one. Leave your politics out of here.

Someone with that little time shouldn't waste it here. How are they even supposed to finish a DQ game which take dozens of hours to complete?

30 minutes a day shouldn't be that difficult.

Five times a week? That's cute. I got my STEM degree and a master's degree while working 8 hours a day. But not everyone can waste their time that way.

Let me tack on to that one.

I-III on NES are (from a gameplay point of view) the same game with refinements as they progress. They had minimal story with emphasis on exploring the world map and revisiting towns with new information and means to access new areas. The size of the maps and the amount of information gathering expanded exponentially between games. The SNES/GBC Remakes of I+II are arguably better in virtually every way, but you miss out on what made them special if you don't play them on NES. III is so much better on SNES/GBC that it would be a shame to miss out on the extra features by playing the NES version. SNES III is honestly a fun classic JRPG, with huge ambitions for it's time.

That being said, if you skip the first three and go straight to IV on NES, you don't really miss much from the NES era. IV on NES plays similarly to I-III, but with much better story narration at the cost of sandbox style exploration. The DS remake has a terrible English translation, and you miss out on how great the NES sprite art was for it's time. Just play the NES version.

A note on versions for the first three. The GBC versions of I-III are basically direct ports of the SNES versions with downgraded graphics and music. However, they have the best gameplay speed because of menu layouts, remapping the A button as an 'everything' button, and because the narrower FOV and map scaling make for much faster travel in dungeons, towns, and even the world map. To add to this, they tend to look and feel like traditional RPG versions of gen I/II Pokémon, which makes for very fun gameplay if you're at all nostalgic for those.

it has a game breaking bug that is hard to trigger as well as altered music, though I wouldn't call it a downgrade.

there are some quirks with the localized version missing pictures of items in shops for w/e reason too.

the game was simplified in the sense that they cut out a lot of shit people complained about, the games length has been reduced a bit, and the intro is condensed down from about 3 hours to about 30 mins - to an hour in length before you fight your first battle, due to the fact that they removed most of the puzzles from the introduction.

Overall its a preference thing, but to be fair dragon quest 7 was long winded in some bad ways, so most people that complain about the changes are probably a bit too purist

Okay lets start

- game reported to be run slower compare to japanese version due to some changes to the menu and shit, you are going to get used to it after awhile though it might be annoying
- never play the original but from what i heard it makes everything easier to find, which is a good thing. With the radar for fragment and the "Wheres the next tablet info" its hard to get lost
- still the same ole too much dialogue for confirmation like every other DQ. It gets really bad especially sharing tablet (why the fuck they don't just let me specify the detail once and run with them?) Also saving details like three times just to share once
- game difficulty depending on how much you get on the vocation
- the final boss is a pushover for me but i am not sure if i grind too hard (i fight him with a Hero, Sage, and another 2 intermediate ones). Certainly not at that point where I can spam UltraHit
- too much palette swap for my liking but this happened to most jrpg in that era
- postgame is quite disappointing, but its understanding given the length of the actual game

Overall its a very good game, with minor annoyance

If you want a more accurate translation, byuu's is super literal. However, as such, it feels lifeless and dull because it's not native.

The DeJap translation feels much more natural, but takes some liberties in order to accomplish that. The liberties taken hear aren't nearly as bad as some DQ games' official NA releases though.

Pick whichever you think you'd enjoy more

Being a Britfag, I missed out on the whole DQ thing, gutted as when I read that issue of The Games Machine with the RARE feature showing some scans of DQ I actually went to Chinatown and bought a famicom, but it would be another decade until I met my wife who taught me Japanese so I could only look at Famicom Tsushin etc and long to play it.

When we lived in Japan, I would occasionally try, and fail to win DQ toys in UFO catcher machines.

Fast forward until last year, I wanted to experience what a Japanese kid did when playing DQ so I started reading a chapter of the DQ manga each week and on Sunday mornings watched the DQ anime. During the week, I would play DQ on the GBC for the remakes, but didn't like them much, so skipped to the DS remakes. I also flicked through the scans of the DQ guides that are just about still seeded on Nya.

Still having fun, I hope you do too OP, even though you'll probably never read this.

Honestly? Between GBC and SNES, The SNES versions look and sound better, but the GBC versions are by far the most playable. Almost double the walking speed, the A button is a contextually aware action button, the menus are much faster, combat animations are quicker, etc. The SNES version feels like a chore after playing the GBC version. Also, GBC RPGs tend to have a really comfy and childlike aesthetic, and III is one of the best examples there are.

That being said, if you've never played them before, the SNES ones are a really good experience and you shouldn't cheat yourself out of the fantastic sprite work.

>Almost double the walking speed
They have the same walking speed. GBC seems faster because of the smaller screen.
>the A button is a contextually aware action button
L and X are context sensitive buttons.
>the menus are much faster
You have to wait for an entire transition to get into the menu in GBC, making it slower by default. Other than that, navigation is the same speed.
>combat animations are quicker, etc.
This is the only one I can't refute. GBC has smaller, less detailed sprites and animations, that play out quicker.
