Its pretty comfy. If you're a fan then you HAVE to try the debug cheat. You can make it 2 player that way among many other weird things

Tenchu 2 was pretty good too

+ great atmosphere
+ level design
+ difficulty sometimes at NES standard (memorize, do it right or instant death)

- controls make you a cripple in combat, turning boss fights into hell

How is the death statement a positive? Enemy memorization is pretty bullshit depending on how it's handled

>> No.3574372

>>3574336

NES games are known for being super hard at first, you have to learn enemy behaviour and timing and memorize boss movements. There's no randomness or cheating from the AI in good games, it's fully predictable.

>> No.3574374

It's one of those games that people either love or hate.
Try it yourself and you'll see, OP.

It's not that hard, you just have to understand how things work in the game and then you can even finish it without getting hit.

No. Both games have aged liked milk.

I enjoyed it more as well, Snake is good but cant really beat a ninja doing his thing (not that MGS isnt also fun of course) part of my bias may be down to Tenchu being the first of the 2 to come out, before anyone says it wasnt I got the Japanese release which came first I know it wasnt first in the west.
Shame the series kinda fizzled out really

It has aged terribly since

The problem with the 5th gen is how horribly many of the games have aged.

As a stealth game? Absolutely, I have played way more hours of Tenchu 1 than MGS. MGS is super slick with good production values and easter eggs and voice acting and all the stuff the series is known for, but actually sneaking around and messing with guards? There aren't even that many places in MGS 1 where you can do that, especially not past the first third of the game or so.

Tenchu is straightforward and simple but it delivers exactly what you want from a ninja assassin game. And the big open maps are excellent.

>problem with the 5th gen is how horribly many of the games have aged

The only flaw is the lack of anti aliasing, which is a console issue and not a problem with the games. They all have a creativity and individuality games from the 2000s doesn't have.

I think the way Resident Evil evolved pretty much says everything. From being a series that created a new genre, it turned into generic fps style shooter (sure you can see your character but it plays like a fps). This describes how games went overall, generic streamlined gameplay in full 3D, so much was lost because of this.

Another example is a classic gametype like what Worms used to be in 2D. How the fuck can you try and make this 3D. It was perfected the way it was. The need for forced evolution into making everything look and play the same is what people will remember from any console games that came after. It's a creativity problem and looking back you'll find newer games aged worse.

>> No.3575139

I tried playing it a bit.
I kept playing through the tutorial until i got a good rank.
Its really tough and its like a bit of a crapshoot if youll get sotted or not.

The last room in the training is particularly problematic. How in the world are you supposed to get the jump on tbe archer around the corner?

Tenchu 3 is basically a really improved remake of 1, but 1 is such and atmosferic and beautiful game that deserve to be played anyways.

I have to say i love all Tenchu games except for the DS abortion and the Wii one i haven't played. Too bad the franchise looks dead.

I got it off ebay a few months ago. Seems really cool but it's really tough. I can't get through mission 4 (I think), whatever the one is with the dogs, archers bridge, and samurai fight at the start and end. I should go back and try again.

What I really hated though was the missions are randomized in terms of enemies. It makes it really hard to memorize routes and strategies when you have no idea which one out of the three I think you'll get.

I'm not even sure who has the rights to it anymore. FromSoftware did for a while, but now they're drunk on Dark Souls money.

MGS is great but terrible as a stealth game. 3 enemies maximum per room, and even that is rare, so usually it's just 2 that you can literally RUN full speed right behind and they won't even hear you unless you're on that special flooring. I imagine that game is super easy to speedrun since you rarely if ever have to stop and wait for enemies to clear out, you just zoom right by everything.

Anon, that's dumb and one of the good things about the game. You already have the ki meter to tell you where the enemies are, use your skills and intelligence to find out where the guards are.

There are three layouts for each stage; the Japanese version of the game lets you choose which layout you want and you can aim to get master ninja for each (more replay value), so I'd recommend that. Get the second version of Tenchu as the original Japanese release was a _much_ shorter game. The second release was based on the international version we're familiar with.

MGS1 doesn't really emphasize stealth the way Metal Gear games before and after it did. It's more of an arcade boss rush with a lot of variety. The only Metal Gear game comparable in that sense is maybe MGS4.

You have to play the VR missions to get the most out of its core.

But are the stages actually any good? I'm watching a playthrough on youtube and they all look really blocky and primitive. Limited by the editor, I'm sure, but I don't want to play missions so far below the quality of the main game.

>> No.3581636

>>3581051
That is basically a compilation of the best stages created with the editor.
So it's more of a skill testing game rather than a full game.
>I don't want to play missions so far below the quality of the main game
Well then probably it's better if you don't play this.
