Lol, both systems have shitty audio processors. The SNES is low/muffled and very reverby. Genesis has farts and high pitch squeels.

But if done right SNES can sound fantastic and genesis sounds much like games in arcades.

Verdict: genesis has much clearer and nicer sound when used properly, much better than snes. But since its not always used properly I'd say more games on SNES have better soundtracks. So the genesis has the best potential for sound, but developers were better at making sound for SNES.

How could anybody prefer Genesis over Super Nintendo? It's not even a true 16 bit machine.

Genesis has only 64 colors like an 8 bit console.

Genesis still uses primitive non-sample based synthesis like an 8 bit console.

I really don't understand. It's just not fair that people like Genesis.

SNES fanboys praised the system for its superior audio-quality however many releases, including Zelda: Link To The Past, Super Metroid and Chrono Trigger, all sounded exactly the same as the previous generations NES titles. The cause of the SNES's shitty RAM and inability to stream from the cartridge was down to the programmers (mainly Japanese) being too poor to buy a good sound font. Thus they had to use GM, the shit you play for MIDIs in Microsoft Windows from DOS, and shortened them so they could fit it in Shigeru Miyamoto's ass. This resulted in a sound resembling something being played from a fucked-up cassette-recorder with clock-radio speakers. Most people remember the SNES for its orchestrated games but in retrospect they all sounded like complete shit taken to account how muddy the audio was. The music wasn't even that good. Some FF6 and Mariotards praise Nobuo Uematsu and Kji Kondo for "utilizing the power of SNES's sound hardware". Some argue that it at least sounded better than any music composed for the Genesis.

To me the SNES's PCM tends to sound like cheap shitty sampled synths where the YM2162+SN76489 actually has some meat to it. Though I think the SNES does orchestral or atmospheric better than the Genesis, the Genesis kills the SNES in rock/heavy style of music. My only problem with the Genesis is it's too easy to make it sound like wet farts.

I'd also put the PC Engine higher than the SNES in terms of sound. I've worked with the Genesis and PCE and I've found that the PCE has better PCM than the Genesis but the wavetable synthesis keeps it from being another shitty sounding PCM sample machine from the 90's.

I'm more a PSG kind of person rather than PCM or FM so that kinda explains my PCE love.

>> No.3571548

>>3571531
Well, your description is accurate for the SNES. On the SNES you have to load the system with sound samples and the system will play what is essentially a MIDI file, and it'll use those samples that were loaded and play them at different pitches to simulate instruments.

It's pretty similar on the Genesis, except there are no sound samples. FM stands for frequency modulation, which means each sound channel has a bunch of parameters you set the way you want, and what happens is the sound chip will generate a pure sine wave but use the settings to distort or modify it, so you get different sounds. And certain settings will change over time so you can get sounds that change while they're being played.

Genesis sound is pretty cool because of how unique it is, but the fact that you can't get "realistic" sounds is the main problem.

Also the only reason games that were on SNES also had shit colors was because devs were idiots and went with mustard/saturated/greyish color palettes due to choice/lack of knowladge.

In the Genesis soundchip there are 6 channels of sound with each channel having a single FM voice. In the Genesis FM synthesis implementation a single FM voice consists of 4 operators which are basically a digital sine wave generator with an ASDR envelope (to control the level of the operator's output over time). You can configure the operators into different combinations to create different instrument sounds. Operators will be either carriers or modulators. Carriers are the operators that are actually heard. Their output is generated into audio that the chip outputs. Modulators always come before carriers in sequence and they modulate the carriers. So in other words modulators shape the timbre of the instrument. To compare to subtractive synthesis the carriers are almost like VCA's in that part of their responsibility is to control loudness and the carriers are like the filter in that they are responsible for altering the timbre.

The soundchip has many 8-bit sized registers that control a different aspect of the 6 channel FM synth on the chip. You basically call up the address of the register and plug in an appropriate value. It's a lot of work but for each channel you have to input the instrument settings, specify pitch, and trigger the "key on" register. With creative use of the 6 channels you could do chords and with creative use of the operator settings you could do evolving "acid" type sounds like Yuzo Koshiro did in Streets of Rage 2.
