Innovation for the sake of innovation, that's how.

Then again, it's not like most of SoR2's soundtrack was exactly original:

Absolutely. Koshiro was able to do amazing things with the Mega Drive sound-chip, and he picked some great songs to sample anyhow.

There are worse cases of music plagiarism in gaming, anyway:

The thing to admire about Koshiro isn't the compositions, which yeah most of the time were copied from techno and house tracks he'd listen at the club Yellow, in Tokyo, but that he was able to make the Mega Drive sound like he did. It was the technical side of Koshiro that people admire, not the compositions.
Although I dunno, I think his Ys stuff is indeed praised for the compositions, not sure if he "borrowed" anything there.

I like how everyone praises his Ys music, yet they always mention arrangements done by someone else and not the original PC-88. He even said that Yonemitsu's TG-16/PCE CD arrangements betrayed his original intention, and feels disappointed about his compositions being arranged without his supervision.

>> No.3576689

Uh it's not "incredibly annoying" "clangy percussion", it's actually based on the incredibly brilliant native Gamelan music of Bali and Indonesia. And it doesn't cause headache's it's actually incredibly life afirming and can take you to a higher state of consciousness if you let it.

Try educating yourself, and not having such a closed mind against non-western music. Just because it doesn't fit into your limited world view of "what music is supposed to be" doesn't mean it's bad. You know there's a lot more people in the world than just the US, and the natives of bali and south east asia were creating gamelan music before "the West" was even created, let alone making western style music.

How about you take 30 seconds to educate yourself before you insult the artform of an entire people? Of course, I'm sure that's asking too much from a fucking American.

It doesn't mean it's good, either. There's a reason why western music tops charts worldwide while this sort of ethnic crap gets relegated to whatever cultural group it originates from. And it's not like western music is homogeneous or anything. The Americas and Europe have spawned more genres of music than I can count, so I don't know where the "limited world view" bullshit comes from.

>Of course, I'm sure that's asking too much from a fucking American.

>There's a reason why western music tops charts worldwide while this sort of ethnic crap gets relegated to whatever cultural group it originates from.

Yeah, and I'm sure none of those reasons have to do with colonialism. Nope it's because Western music is just naturally better! All those years of WEstern exploitation, slavery, and economic gutting of indigenous regions have no impact at all! Nope, nothing at all like a conquering nation forcing its musical standards on the rest of the world. Western music was just naturally better than the music of every single other people in the world.

Glad we cleared that up.

I highly doubt that the average non-westerner listening to a radio-friendly tune at a dance club is in any way reminded of colonial exploitation - especially considering a lot of them live in countries led by equally awful and exploitative governments. What's more is that a lot of these governments have tried to lead people away from western music through bans and propaganda, but people continue to consume and enjoy it regardless.
