"We built the pyramids. We were kings" Edition
Previous thread: >>3487875

FAQ:

>What is Dragon Quest?
A classic turn-based JRPG series that is incredibly popular in Japan, though not so much in the west. It was created by Yuji Horii, has been ongoing for more than 30 years, and is approaching eleven mainline games with a lot of spinoff games such as the Dragon Quest Monsters, Mystery Dungeon, Rocket Slime, and Dragon Quest Heroes series. Dragon Quest I-III and IV-VI are very loosely connected trilogies, but you don't have to play them in order to enjoy them. VII and beyond are all completely independent games.

>Why do all the characters look like they came from Dragon Ball Z?
Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, is the character and monster designer for Dragon Quest.

>Where do I get started in the series?
You could start chronologically or you could start anywhere in the series. Generally, III, V, and VIII are your best bet for newcomers though. If you want to know what the best version of each of them is, or if you'd like more information on other games in the series, just ask the thread.

>What games have recently released?
Dragon Quest Builders for the PS4 and Vita and Dragon Quest VII 3DS have recently released in the west. Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 3 for 3DS and Dragon Quest Heroes 2 for PS3, PS4, and Vita recently released in Japan.

There is also a fan translation recently released for Dragon Quest Monsters: Terry's Wonderland 3DS. This link is being provided because it is highly unlikely that this game will ever be officially localized. http://gbatemp.net/threads/translation-dragon-quest-monsters-terrys-wonderland-3d.431204/

>>3557802
>What are the next Dragon Quest games coming out?
Dragon Quest VIII 3DS will be released sometime in 2017 in the west. Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 Professional will be released on February 19, 2017 for the Nintendo 3DS in Japan. Also, Itadaki Street: Dragon Quest & Final Fantasy 30th Anniversary will be released sometime in 2017 for PS4 and Vita in Japan.

>What is the next mainline Dragon Quest game coming out?
Dragon Quest XI, releasing sometime in 2017 (hopefully) in Japan. It is still unconfirmed if it is coming to the west, unfortunately. Feel free to post any new information released about the game in this thread.

>Can we discuss Dragon Quest VII 3DS in this thread?
Absolutely, along with any other modern or retro Dragon Quest games. (Because you shouldn't have to go to /v/ to have a general about new or old Dragon Quest games.) Although Dragon Quest VII is technically a retro game, if you are discussing the game, please make sure to mark spoilers.

>Where can I find that interview with Yuji Horii about Jami the Rape Horse?
We don't like to talk about that incident.

I've actually been thinking a lot about what >>3557956 said and I think maybe we could make a general in /vg/ work. Before Dragon Quest VII came out, Dragon Quest didn't have a game come out since 2011 with Dragon Quest VI DS (Dragon Quest Heroes doesn't really count since that's a part of the endless Musou genre), so I think Dragon Quest has had quite the resurgence in the past month compared to the last five years. I think a Dragon Quest general could be popular (or popular enough to still exist) in /vg/ as long as we have some people from here to get it going.

Maybe there could still be a retro Dragon Quest thread for just Dragon Quest games from the PS1 and GBC era and before here, but I don't want to risk splitting the thread like that. Because I agree, obviously we shouldn't be discussing modern games on /vr/, but without going on /vg/ we don't really have anywhere else to have a consistent general about newer and older Dragon Quest games. So I think we should make the leap to /vg/ and try to make this thread work there.

What do you guys think? This is a pretty crucial decision for the thread so I'd like you all to offer your opinions, please. In order to make something like this work, we would have to gather enough people to actively participate in a Dragon Quest general on /vg/.

Can I get some advice for god in VII? From my understanding I need to beat him at least three times to get every tablet he has.

My team, everyone has their best possible equips other then Maribel who I gave the mad cap
Hero: level 48 hero
Maribel: level 45 druid
Ruff: level 47 champion
Mervyn: level 46 champion

My tactic right now is basically this, hero will use multiheal, maribel will use kafizzle, and ruff and mervyn spam blade of ultimate power. I beat him once with this but it took 21 turns so I got no reward. Any advice is appreciated.

The first DQ is very basic which is ok because it predates FF1.

But how much has DQ evolved in terms of mechanics? Is its popularity a result of being basic and entry level for Japanese normie plebs or does it innovate with each release?

Does DQ have you game complex systems to conquer bosses or do you just grind?

How does DQ compare to the Final Fantasy series?

How does DQ compare to the Breath of Fire series?

How does DQ compare to the SaGa series?

How does DQ compare to the Megami Tensei series?

How does DQ compare to the (Jap) Wizardry series?

Do DQ games change in design/gameplay as they move from Famicom to SFC to PS1 to PS2 and beyond? The Final Fantasy games did this.

Do handheld DQ games have different feel/style than console DQs?

Did they make computer DQs?

Are there any strategy RPG (FF tactics) spinoffs of DQ?

Are there any action RPG (Ys) spinnoffs of DQ?

How does DQ monsters compare with pokemon?

both actually, you can beat bosses while being underleveled if you play your cards right
>How does DQ compare to the Final Fantasy series?
Old FF= Old DQ
New FF < New DQ
>How does DQ compare to the Breath of Fire series?
I'd say they're about equals, it's a real shame BoF6 happened
>How does DQ compare to the SaGa series?

>How does DQ compare to the Megami Tensei series?
on the monster collecting aspect of DQ Monsters, it's actually simpler than demon negotiating but also complex when it comes to breeding
>How does DQ compare to the (Jap) Wizardry series?
have't played any of em, sry
>Do DQ games change in design/gameplay as they move from Famicom to SFC to PS1 to PS2 and beyond? The Final Fantasy games did this.
yes, compare DQ3 to DQ5/DQ6 to DQ7 to DQ8 and you can see the changes while they kept the same artstyle intact
>Do handheld DQ games have different feel/style than console DQs?
depends if you care about graphics too much, if you don't mind then they're about the same
>Did they make computer DQs?
other than DQ10 never ever, no
>Are there any strategy RPG (FF tactics) spinoffs of DQ?
I think there was a Japan only Card game on the DS, other than that none
>Are there any action RPG (Ys) spinnoffs of DQ?
the closest you'll get to that is DQ Heroes

Well, I started DQVII on launch day, and exactly a month later I beat the 2nd Bonus Dungeon and consider myself done. Definitely in my top 10 JRPGs even if the formula began to drag after awhile and it felt like a lot of content was cut and stitched together plotwise in the late game. Don't know if there's truth to that or not but there was a feeling of the team going "oh shit this needs to end at some point" starting around when the Sea Dragon reappeared.

Post game was kind of disappointing. God was a good fight but the Spirits didn't really take things up a notch like they should have. I beat them first try easy. Kernel Colonel from one of the DLC tablets was a nice challenge until I learned he was weak to Sleep. It'd be nice to get a few more really tough bosses before they stop releasing new ones. The whole idea of Traveler's Tablets felt like wasted potential. Randomly generating dungeons by combining pre-existing areas could have added a lot more value to the game if there was a bit more randomization. The layouts were very predictable and the loot was crappy and always in the same place so what was the point of doing any of them more than once except to job grind? Overall a really fun game though.

Slot Machines for Tokens, Matching Game for easy Gold. With the Match, uncover all six spaces in the bottom two rows because Swap and Bonus Pick heavily favor appearing in those rows. Take a picture of the six you uncover, don't try to remember that shit.

Some slot machines have two rows of 7s, but I think only for the ones that cost 1 and 10 tokens a play. Always go all in when putting tokens into those. Play the cheapest machine until you've built up a good amount, then move on to the 10 token machine. Save whenever you hit a big jackpot and reload your save whenever you have a bad losing streak.

Buy shit tons of Magic Water. The Prayer Ring isn't that great. That 5000 token shield isn't that great and I'm pretty sure you get one in a chest eventually.

As someone who is playing the Dragon Quest games in Japanese, I think I can help you with this.

IV is either between PS1 or DS. PS1 is missing idle animations for enemies, but they're nearly the same game, so it's up to you. I've heard people complain the DS version is way easier than the PS1 version but I've never really noticed a huge difference. Skip the Famicom version unless you like having to put up with AI party members and missing quality of life improvements.

For V, definitely PS2 unless you really, really like Deborah. If you do, then pick the DS version. Don't bother with the SFC version. You can only have three party members at a time in that version and that sucks.

If you decide to play III, pick the SFC version. GBC version is just a downgraded port of the SFC with extra bonus content (but the extra bonus content sucks in my opinion because it's basically just a shitty collection quest)

If you play VI, play the DS version. But play the other games first. VI has problems that not even the remake can fix.

Well, you've only played modern Dragon Quest games up to this point, so this might be a bit tricky. I'd say start with V. IV-VI are technically a trilogy but the only thing connecting them is a couple of vague references and the Sky Castle. III might be harder to get into because it's less plot-heavy than IV and V. V is one of the best Dragon Quests ever made and the most story-driven game in the series. If you don't like V, chances are you won't like any of the other retro Dragon Quest games.
