for example, games like chrono trigger or earthbound sold millions of copies around the world, so why its so difficult to find copies of these games? and because of that they have become expensive too.

>> No.3557287

But I don't think they're hard to find? I don't think genuine rarity is the main driving factor behind their high prices. Things far rarer than those sell for less.

thats why im asking for opinions, im not sure about why they are so "rare" by now, when they sold millions years ago

demand > supply

Outside of Japan, they didn't sell millions.

Maybe you should actually research shit before spouting lies. These are specifically only accounting the SNES version of the games.

Earthbound/Mother 2: 300,000 in Japan, 140,000 in the U.S., 440,000 total.

Chrono Trigger: 2.3 million in 2,030,000 in Japan, 280,000 in the U.S., 2,310,000 sales total BUT only 280,000 in English

As you can see Earthbound never sold close to a million and Chrono Trigger only sold a quarter of a million outside of Japan.

Look up the number of carts produced and systems manufactured, sometimes you can look up the number instead of assuming it's millions.

ok guys, im so sorry for not checking the actual number, kill me now.

It's all dependent on the game. I got Chrono Trigger for SNES (my very first preorder), and I love the game play it every now and then, and I've kept it and I'm not exactly willing to let it go because I do play it every now and then. So I have already reduced the supply with the ones I got. I think others have also fallen in love with the game and got their own as well, and will likely keep it. Fortunately for Chrono Trigger, it is still widely available on Playstation, DS, and a variety of digital platforms like PSN. The game is also readily emulated everywhere, which is another option which may have increased the demand for someone wanting the real thing as well (maybe to show off). Constant praise of the game from various outlets like youtube or this very board just adds that extra "word of mouth" advertisement. There is great demand, but fortunately supply in terms of digital options are plentiful but the old SNES carts have long ceased production. There are still plenty of Super Famicom carts, and a lot of original Playstation copies (Japan and US to my knowledge) floating around for cheap.

The game I wanted which was the hardest for me to find was a Japanese Sega Saturn game called WWF In Your House. I do not think WWF was very popular in Japan (it may have its following) and the game itself wouldn't blow anyone's mind. I did finally find it, and it was less than $1USD (plus $10 shipping) still brand new but it took me years to find. I unsealed the game, played it, and was contented. Just saying, sometimes hard to find may not mean expensive.

When a game is good (earthbound isn't) or somebody has nostalgia (nostalgia is bad) for that game, they're willing to pay any price for the chance to take a picture of it themselves and post it on /vr/ showing they have it.
Rather than enjoying the game and playing it like a normal person, by downloading it and emulating it, they have girlbrains and need to get validation for their "hobby"
