Ok, I'm a big fan of Dragon Quest, the old Final Fantasy games, and the RPG genere in general.

Now that Breath of Fire I and II are con the n3DS VC (EUR) I planned to buy both of them (using that offer of "pay 12 € for both games").

But I discovered that existed the GBA ports, and (at least on I) they make some enhancements.

So... what version of each game is better? Are the enhancements really worth it?

They both suck ass. Breath of Fire III is the one to play.

The enhancements aren't really worth it. They're both alright as they are, poor translations and all.

If you actually enjoy the games you might want to retry them later on in different versions. But really, we're not talking about DQ1 --> DQ1+2 levels of improvement.

Your best bet for BOF2 is to play on an emulator with a couple of patches.

Is there a patch to change to the GBA portraits?

Thanks, it's good to know that!

Usually I don't play fan-made enhancements, maybe some translations. I don't have any problem with some grinding.

I can access homebrew in my n3DS, so the patched SNES version can be an option.

Time to think about in what way play the games. Thanks, guys!

GBA over SNES has washed-out colors, lower resolution, increased money/XP gains, dash button (run instead of walk), several story graphics during cutscenes and character portraits.

Re-translation with said patches has over SNES: increased money/XP gains, dash button (run instead of walk) and an actual translation.

Picrelated - re-translation. BoF2 original translation is notorious for being very literal, machine-like, with many grammar mistakes and swapped dialogue for Yes/No answers. Re-translation fixes it.

Not every fan-enhancement is some headcanon bullshit that can only come from the head of an edgy teenager, with a little to no consideration of the staples present in the series an enhanced game is from, original writing and script. BoF2 re-translation definitely isn't.

wait is it an actual retranslation, or did they just alter the original translation?

It's an actual re-translation.

It's amazing how fucking lazy Capcom was with the GBA ports, especially considering they left in the awful original SNES translations.

>>3548458
You may want to in this case cause vanilla BoF2 is insanely grindy. The balance in general is out of whack in that game.
