Retro is a type of game, a game era where game controls and gameplay and actual substance were much more important than how it looked and its aesthetics. The N64/PS1 generation was the first to begin embracing that style-over-substance garbage, and belongs in the modern gaming era.

Pre-1995 is when the vast majority of gaming was actually retro. Exceptions occur across the line both ways, but in general, 1995 is the dividing line between retro and modern.

Period.

If you didn't live through that era as an adult, you don't have a correct opinion. So please, stop saying N64 is retro. Because you are wrong.

5th gen is precisely one of the hardest gens to get into due to early 3D and low fps, something crucial for modern gamers.
Because of this, all the "style" these consoles had in their day is irrelevant now. Nobody will play N64 or PS1 because of the graphics (unless it's 2D, maybe), but because of the substance.

I'm not that young and 5th gen certainly wasn't my first generation, grew up during 3rd and 4th, but you're an idiot if you think every 5th gen game is "style over substance". Period.

I kind of agree with you that 5th gen could be considered the start of "modern gaming", although I'd say that's most likely 6th gen, with Xbox and Halo online multiplayer exploding into popularity.

But in GENERAL, guess what most games like Mario 64, Metal Gear Solid, Goldeneye, and all the little crappy N64 games and the massive shovelware PS1 games are? Style over substance fucking garbage.

I still think Super Mario 64 is one of the 3D games with the best controls, even surpassing later 3D Mario games.
