What are /vr/'s thoughts on pic related?

also obscure gems thread.

Its good, but it has mandatory grinding which sucks.

Also it starts amazing and tapers off really hard at chapter 3 and 4 especially just feels like a grind.

>obscure gems
Maybe because it wasn't released in NA, but I assure you Terranigma isn't obscure by any stretch of the imagination.

I can count on my fingers the number of jrpgs that I liked. Terranigma is one of them. What I loved:
>story is good and not more of "thou have to save the princess"
>likeable characters
>combat isn't a boring
>dungeons are diverse with amazing atmosphere
>traveling over the world (many locations to explore), city building
>amazing graphics and sound

Great game.
Another one of those esoteric masterpieces inspired by the new age conspiracy boom during the 80s in japan.
Lots of subtle hints at those concepts in there.

Too bad the creator of the games was killed by yakuza

I really have to get back to terranigma, seemed interesting but the gameplay didn't pull me in

as for hidden gems, here's one of kawazu's saner games - treasure of the rudras

My favorite SNES hidden gem is Out of this World. It is an Amiga port and has load times on the Super Nintendo between stages but I found it interesting that they managed to have rotoscope 3D prior to the Super FX chip.

Dude, people stare at me blankly when I mention Actraiser to them. And not even normal people, game developers have never heard of it. And that's one of Quintet's more well known titles. Just because you are familiar with the game doesn't mean everyone is.

Actraiser isn't obscure.
Another World/Out of this World isn't even close to obscure. It was ported to a dozen platforms.

Seriously dude. Act raiser was extremly popular. And shit, out of this world was so popular it was literally ported to every system that existed. Terinigma has 2 prequels. You can't have that many sequels and be obscure, it just doesn't make sense. Same with actraiser. If people weren't buying it, they wouldn't get a chance to make sequels.

I was lucky enough to play Terranigma when it was released, and it blew my 8-year-old mind. I was a bit surprised when I got old enough to browse the internet and discovered that most people hadn't even heard of it, I had assumed it was the kind of game everyone loved.
It's still one of my favorites. Playing it as an adult made me more aware of its flaws, but I also discovered a lot of stuff that flew over my head as a kid.

Bought it really cheap at release, imported from the UK. Didn't even know this game was considered kinda rare until way later.

It's one of those few games that actually effect me emotionally, the story really has something in it that touched me deeply. Also because I'm a swede it was fun seeing Stockholm played a major role.

>> No.3547019

As the rest of the series, it's pretty alright. Feels polished, but very unambitious in game play.

>>3546750
Another world is far from obscure.

>>3546873
I, not that anon, did use the right weapon and I was doing 8 damage or something. Still won because this game is easy, but it took a while.

It's a bit sad that most Terranigma concept art is in some Dragon Quest artbook. And nobody has scanned it decently.

This. CT is a very good game, but I think Terranigma is the better experience.

Two great games~
The first one, Terranigma, is amazing. I praise the soundtrack a lot. Although, to me, it does feel like started to slowly lose quality after the arc where humans were created.

Rudra however, is so very well detailed. The Mantra system is kind of hard to handle but the world the game occurs in is very well define. The soundtrack is epic and the fact that the game is told in three different point of views is what makes this one of my favourite SNES games. It's kind of a shame how obscure this one is.

No it definitely has mandatory grinding.

If you kill everything you come across you will be fine for awhile, but you will start to fall behind slowly, then you'll really be really far behind. Bloody Mary is one of those walls, but it's not the only one.

You're right, you don't need to grind, but dealing 1 damage to every enemy and boss is going to make the game take about 20x longer than it should if you just sat and grinded a level or two every area or two.

All you fuckers should just be happy the new generation is playing any of this old shit, period.

99% of what you enjoyed will be lost to time in a few years, not even a memory, just some noise in a dusty archive somewhere, never to be retrieved again.

Well you can, think about stuff like Lunatic Dawn.
Of course Terranigma isn't obscure at all, it was translated to spanish and probably other european languages, it's the opposite of an obscure game.

Only if you don't explore. I didn't grind any at the first playthru and I only had problems with the robot boss in the russian lab (or what it was, the one with 3 legs). Still beat it after a day of trying and final boss was no problem.

Next time I played it I actually got stuck on that same boss because I played more straight forward and didn't walk around trying to figure things out.

That one is tricky because the area is loaded with equipment that looks nice on the surface but actually drains your stats, so if you are not careful about what you wear, you might end up fighting it with your STR cut in half.

like a hardversion or a complete remade one just like with all the mario/metroid hacks.
