I'm basing this entirely off personal experience, but every Sega owner I knew growing up was older than me, and I remember a lot of teenagers owning Sega consoles.

A lot of teen-oriented games don't lend themselves well to "retro" nostalgia: annual sports games (Madden '9x, etc.), racing games, "realistic" action games, and so on. And those kinds of games were a big part of Sega's library, and more so than Nintendo.

So in addition to the never-ending console war, a big part of Sega's library is ignored by retro gamers.

My problem with SNES music is that literally every song would only be massively improved if they waited a few years thanks to CD audio being right around the corner, and the heavy limitations of the samples at the time. Midi at least had the excuse that you could hook it up to a SC-55 or something, with the SNES you're limited greatly by the budget chip.

The same just can't be said for FM synth.

You suck on the FM synth, but the MD's chip isn't the best there is, literally every song would only be massively improved if they waited a few years and got a better one, like a JD-800.
Moot point really.

90% of the SNES and MD music sounds bad because not everyone is Yuzo Koshiro or Nobuo Uematsu.

So, your problem isn't really that "nintendo didn't wait for CD", your problem is that you like console wars and like to pick a side to be biased about. Reality is that both are outdated systems and both sound like shit for today's standards, and only talented sound technicians could make good use of it.

I suppose what I like about the MD chip is the same reason I like the old Commodore SID chip, or the early Soundblaster/Adlib stuff. It's all about clever use of what's available, rather than the later stuff like the SNES that's really just general music poorly represented on archaic hardware.

On the plus side, remastered music from systems like the SNES stands up far better today than the now primitive work-arounds of FM.
