Spellcross - Custom Monster pack for OBLIGE V1.00 is now complete


You can either play OBLIGE maps with them mixed in with normal DOOM enemies for a much greater variety pool, or use them on their own. Unlike the past "arena" map, you can now face the monster in a more playable state.

Let me know what you think, any videos would be a great bonus too.

Had an encounter at the start of my 5th map involving a Balloon, 3 Harpies flying over a nearby wall and 2 Hell Riders, (webm is one of a few attempts of me reloading the autosave to recreate it, surprised I took almost no damage, I usually got destroyed) pretty scary.

Yeah, some of the monster combinations are actually pretty neat, making you ask yourself which is the more important target to aim for first. The Hell Riders themselves are quite a unique enemy to fight, too. Are all the enemies' abilities true to their original game, or did you make some new ones for Doom?

majority are new ones, some are just walk and shoot. Not every new monster had to be unique.

I got fed up of all the "custom" monsteres being reskinned, I wanted to add flavour to the gameplay dynamic and I did the best I could. A lot of these concepts were scrapped from my "unofficial" doom 2 sequel for new monsters, so the ideas couldn't go to waste.

Let me tell you a little story about that while I'm taking a break from Back to Saturn X.

It's no secret that Russian programmers in the 80-90s were among the best in the world. It comes from one of the greatest mathematical education systems that USSR had. I know because both me and my father studied in that system. What people don't know, is what Russian piracy was about.

And oh boy, it was RAMPANT in that time period. Basically, there was no way to buy games and consoles officially, so people would crack copy protection systems themselves, write the program to the diskette, and pass it to their friends (or sometimes sell it). It's worth noting that NES (or rather a Chinese knockoff of Japanese Famicom) came to Russia only in the 90-s, so people at home were mostly playing video games on older PCs or not at all, so PC gaming was jumpstarted pretty hard.

There's an anecdote about the fact that at a certain moment Doom was installed on more systems than Windows. Russian pirates gave it a twist. Around 95% of pirated Win95 systems that were sold or copied in Russia had Doom PREINSTALLED. That's why most Russian kids who were born/studied in the 90-s have played the game and loved it.

So in a way your wish already came true.

How long have you been on that one map?
I tried to get my monsters as close to OBLIGE's spawning rules as possible, but I've noticed if you have too many monsters the game doesn't provide you enough ammo (not my fault, seems to be an oblige thing)

You were right about the Ghost atatcking frames, but I've never seen it graphically jump in game, maybe I did this on purpose, but the hitbox on attacking was quite weird from your webm, I have to sort this out further next patch.

OBLIGE itself has improved a LOT in the most recent update. I think a lot of the waterways in outdoor maps though are wasted potential, and it really seems to like placing Cacodemons now, but otherwise it's a lot better than the boxed maps.

Too long, a lot of attempts were get getting the red key, due lots of monsters in a small space. I ended up going "fuck it" and running past everything instead of fighting, and if I take too long after opening the red door, the demon by the blue key comes over and wrecks me with the chaingunners. Those hell knights camped the teleporter and instakilled me on a previous run as well (why I pre-shot the BFG).

This was on normal settings, also. MAP09 of a "one episode" wad. I probably should have excluded doom monsters but oh well.

There was a Wolfenstein knockoff "Smuta", but Doom was too hard to reproduce.
In '96 there was Chasm: The Rift, a mix of Quake (all things are polyonal), Duke 3D (Environments are highly interactive) and Doom (no room-over-room). Most notable feature is live enemy dismemberment (if you shoot off Marine's arms, he will drop rifle and get a pistol. If you shoot off his second arm, he will come at you kicking and trying to bite)

In '97 there was Parkan: Imperial Chronicles (picrelated), which was a mix of Elite, Doom and System Shock (boarding and spacestations worked like Doom levels with some SystemShock-y interactions)

While my first PC came without preinstalled Doom, my dad brought several floppies with Doom and Heretic along with it. We were both playing them (Heretic was actually my favourite), and he even let me skip classes if my first ones were something like Literature or PE to play Doom instead.
Later when my schools computer class got upgraded with Pentiums 133Mhz, I entertaned myself and my classmates by speedrunning (I only knew a few tricks that I figured myself) Doom and Duke 3D in 40 minutes (length of a standard class).

But certainly not as fast as Software. My old laptop (a Celeron 1037U, to be more exact) gets a constant 18 FPS in D3D mode, independent of resolution and detail level. Yet Software mode gets ~64 FPS most of the time (!!!!!)

heh i like that level. there's only one archvile that teleports into the crates though. leg it for one of the exits when you start to hear things teleporting. or learn where the trigger line is. it's the row of 4 small crates which the penultimate step of a staircase, north of the blue key, here pictured in the bottom right corner.

the other appears when you step on the blood pentagram with the rocket launcher. use it to bounce yourself to the megasphere on the crate nearby.

Black Warrior is like if Doomero's mercenaries mod, Project MSX and Hideous Destructor were thrown in a blender and something awful but with "ohgodhowdidthisworkedthisshitshouldn'thappenongzdoom(c)grafzahl" levels of surprise.
Gameplay is hella stiff, music switching can get annoying, monsters being recolors of marines can be offputting but hey, MSX does the same (even the badass addon does this with the stealth troopers and plasma soldiers) and they are nice. Limited weapons is my definitive problem with the mod, maybe if you played it on a lower difficulty or had a cvar/setting where you can have unlimited weapon carry would be cool, or have weapon limit expansions, whatever. But overall, its an amazing mod, play it on Equinox of a wad that has is nothing but giant structures.
It really needs some polishing and simplication because there's a lot of buttons to use and me having a non-multi button mouse with a broken mousewheel&button which is problematic imo.

I think general drop in quality in Doom 1, 2 and many MANY mods comes with the increase in difficulty, often having to make the maps either bigger or have more enemies and often it can become tedious to deal with and navigate through if the flow of the player is broken for any reason.

Are there any wads out there that get really hard but also the harder they get the better they become? I know most wads end up becoming just tedious and stupid when difficulty spikes.

I seemed to have managed, but I also played on Hey Not To Rough, as I often get the impression that many ambitious megawads these days go for a higher difficulty in an attempt to top the stock game (which is pretty easy on UV), and because it seems more grandiose and epic.

Maybe I should give it another go on Hurt Me Plenty, I really did like the levels and atmosphere it built so it'd be nice to see if I could do as well against more fiendish odds.

This is the kind of thing you should be aiming to emulate - the Hexen frozen enemy sprites. Have a look through the hexen.wad if you need to see what they change from the standard sprite to the frozen verison.

Lots of icicles added, quite a lot darker than your sprite, but still with good contrast of dark and light.

I'm trying to emulate this though. I'm very fond of how enemies are frozen in ALttP, and I've never been fond of the darker, dingier ice effect in Hexen. It works fine within the context of Hexen because everything about it is very dark and gothic.

GMOTA on the other hand is almost slapstick in its gore and effects, and I'm more fond of striking, bright colors for said effects

Software just causes this weird effect where you seem to be emanating light. Maps favoring dark sectors become basically Doom 3 with that, which is not very fun.

How do I use 3D fireballs and potions from Risen3D but not all the other stuff, while using smoothdoom?
Also when you launch smoothdoom along with smoothtextures and some wad, do smooth textures naturaly apply? Cause I haven't noticed any differences and there's no menu for textures in game.

risen3d is a source port. an engine all by itself.

smooth doom is a mod for g/zdoom, which is a completely different source port.

you would have to port risen3d's features to zdoom, or port smooth doom to risen3d.

assuming no-one has done either of these things already, as neither strike me as particularly easy or quick to do.

It's slightly disappointing is all.

For what it's worth, the next map in the rotation for Scythe 2 scales the enemy presence to reflect the fact that you no longer have all the fancy weapons.

On the bright side, at least your mod upgrades carry over in D4D so you don't have to redo those. Also, if we're talking Demonsteele, the Life Token mechanic protects you until you're teleported thanks to the invulnerability frames, meaning you can take all your weapons all fine and dandy unless you're low on tokens.

Search retro shader gzdoom. You need the most recent gzdoom beta iirc, turn on the lens distortion option in the display settings, and use the retro shader pk3 like any other kid. It's nice to be able to look up and down in a res and style closer to the original game.
