It's a .7z file which I dragged staight onto GZDoom.exe and it loaded up after decompiling (which took awhile).

Playing through maps generated with the new OBLIGE version, 7.50.

I must say, the maps generated are definitely a major improvement in quality when it comes to how fun they are to play. The overall focus seems to have changed, it's not massive slaughtermap fests of square boxes with tons of basic elevators, enemies, and health anymore but rather more tighter levels with less resources that also sometimes seem to utilize enemy spawners when you need to backtrack to the door after getting the keys. There's also a lot more fancy map design stuff such as elevators like these, curving staircases, more decorative prefabs like fountains, etc. Finding some of the secrets seem to be a lot more tougher.

You can obviously definitely still spot the repetition in its map design patterns, especially with plenty of small bodies of water in outdoor maps that feel like more can be done with them. I'll also miss the extra map themes utilized with Glaice's custom 6.20 build as with the other modifiers it had, but overall for most the maps it shits out will be more enjoyable.

Too bad there's no dedicated Wolfenstein theme anymore, though. With how maps generated are now it would be great

Like, bodies of water such as these. Most of the time they don't really contribute much to the map and often just fill the gaps when they could have added in all kinds of nooks and crannies into them.

turns out it's not so difficult, when you've memorised the trap triggers, and locations of convenient monster blocking lines, in advance. just slow, ultra cautious.

used a comedy strategy from a max demo for the fight vs. 12 at the very end - let yourself be bounced out of the arena you're supposed to be trapped in, kill enemies from safety.

sadly couldn't quite kill all the 9 archviles in the death exit sector before health ran out.

So far I'm liking the game. The realism feel to gameplay, excellent animations and great atmosphere. Enemy sound is good and actually enables for echolocating, whereas in Doom you ALWAYS here roars behind your back. And if you ignore it all the time you're gonna get sneaked up on eventually.

It was a thing I decided to seek out after playing Duke Nukem 3D: Megaton on the PS3, though you don't get the freedom and precision of a mouse with a dualshock (turning and looking with a stick is 'just ok'), I did notice that with the use of the left analog, I noticed this as very smooth and free.

Then going back to my laptop (with it's crummy keyboard), I noticed WASD was less free and smooth, only providing absolute movement and in fixed directions. It got me thinking, there ought to be a way to have both an analog and a mouse. I wanted the best of console controls and PC controls.

The product itself isn't 100% perfect (the DPad is just completely balls), but the analog stick itself is quite good, and the concept works great, I really want to see a better company do the same thing, and see the concept spread, I personally think it's the future of FPS player input, or, that it should be.

The Slayer doesn't need to be pumped between shots so has a better refire rate. It subsequently does not jam. Also, I think it does more damage per shot.

Double barrel shotgun is the best way to take out spectres. I believe it also hits a little harder and more accurately than the pump shotgun, and of course it never jams or shortstrokes. It's the weapon with the fastest select time, too, so it's a good thing to pull out when you're in a tight spot.

Ok I figured it out. If you tp too fast, like I did first times, enemies don't spawn after tp. I had to noclip to tp once more and then it was fine.

Sooooo. That was great fun.

I'd recommend spawning an arch soon after tp (like a couple of seconds, so you can pick some shit up and see what's in store on the swamp). Also change pinkies in the final battle to cacos - at least like a third of them. Then it'd perfect.

The OBLIGE "Spellcross" update has a lot of gameplay balance fixes, since it helped a lot when playtesting these monsters, so you should use the data from it tomorrow instead of "Spellcross Arena" (where the image is from). I made the original wad for new custom monsters in battlefields (armageddon wads etc) and as a race for the likes of ZDoom Warz. I've not tried it on any other wads, since I like my DOOM vanilla (with a few monsters for gameplay purposes), so I can't recommend anything specific.

NPR Quest continues. I put a sort of HDR tonemapping effect on the normalized depth to get smooth gradients wrapping over big shapes, I think it's good but that's subject to change. Edge detection via Photoshop's edge detect stylize filter on the depth isn't great, need a better method.

Welp, I made it, /doom/. Knees Deep in the Dead finished on Nightmare. Mission seven was a hell of a level followed by a satisfying albeit easy as a piece of caco level eight. It was a fun ride with it's highs and lows and I can't wait to play Inferno.

It can be fun, but that requires thought put into the arenas, the enemies, their placement and more importantly weapons that are basically catchartic to use.

Where doom falls short is the enemies keep spawning so placing goes out the window, and all the guns are basically methods for you to activate their "make me die in agony" state, which is handy because from the start of the game you can only carry like 20 shells for your shotgun. Not good game design, that.

Having these monsters + DOOM classics is really fun, and its quite intense if you don't have the DOOM monsters in at all sometimes. I love to watch a video of someone playing these monsters and oblige combined.

I'm not saying wolf TNO is anything exceptional in level design or shooting mechanics, but we've set a low bar here in this discussion by virtue of the subject matter (modern shooters, and no, d44m isn't retro style or even retro-esque, it's a 2016 game with 2016 game design phylosophy).

Wolf TNO had a quite decent (by vidya standrats) story and the new Billy Mcpolishname was actually likeable thanks to his amusing internal monologue. It's a modern linear sightseeing tour done right, and SOME of the levels and combat encounters were nicely designed. D44m doesn't have anything besides the mediocre shooting and overused finishing moves, however.

So basically what I'm saying is nuwolf is a better GAME than nudoom, but are both very run of the mill shooters. D44m just happened to bore me to tears before the credits, and TNO would as well were it a longer game.

And I blazed through the thing like it was nothing on my PS4 right off coming from MW3's campaign, and that's not without bringing the hilariously broken laser gun into combat (which I only ever used because the weapons are pure, distilled carcinogen extract in the shape of a conveniently modern tacticool rifle). It just so happens to be that Doom 4 is set on actively seeking out the player and therefore becomes inherently more fun to play.

Been working on a jukebox for the Red Manticore ship. It's sort of a way to customize your home base, you select a song and it plays. Simple enough.
Thing is, your music selection is remembered. If you want to head out to another map and then return to base, the song continues playing instead of playing the default song. If you close the game and then open it up, your chosen song will continue playing instead of the default song.

i don't see how "it's a 2016 game with 2016 game design phylosophy" and "name 5 other FPS revolving around the concept of arenas where your freedom of movement is half as large as it is in doom 4." correlate, or how not having 5 other games with more freedom of movement would make the arenas in doom 4 good. it's not hard to believe that there's just not many good arena-based games. honestly arenas were a bad decision for a doom sequel to begin with, doom maps are all about enemy placement. now we just get these beautiful areas that very good artists spent a long time on, and then enemies just happen while you run around in the box. if you think that's fun, great, but it's a lot less impressive than good enemy placement from a skilled mapper.

i doubt there's 5 of any quality since it's niche despite being pretty simple to design but killing floor, serious sam, tower of guns, unreal tournament, quake 3, painkiller, will rock (don't actually play this)

the comparison between both stem from the slower, start-stop pacing other games have to their combat and the fluidity of the movement in d44m helps into that. notice how not at any point I'm bringing the quality of the arena encounters, I'd love for some traditionally placed enemies to make up for the lack of memorable encounters in, say, most custom snapmaps I've seen around, but the main deal is that monsters don't really begin to feel half as effective or fun to fight unless it's a bunch of them, especially taking into their added mobility into account. The arenas kinda complement that.

I feel like I should agree with that the areas looked good (mainly the techbase ones), but a part of me wants to say the hell areas played it better. Perhaps they should've reserved arena encounters for the hell levels, it would've made so much more sense that way.

also, two of those you mentioned aren't singleplay games, and KF/PK/SS all three keep the same design/gameplay language as they did in the very beginning so I'm not sure whether they count or not. I've heard, uh, stuff about will rock. stuff. stuff, stuff.

Since I've started playing Doom, Duke, and Blood with pistol (or for Blood, pitchfork) starts, I've learned that knowing map secrets are absolutely necessary at higher difficulties. So if I don't already know them, I often play with a secrets guide nearby that I glance at to get a general idea where stuff is.

For the most part, I'm not a big fan of secrets. I'm alright with them if there's some kind of simple telegraphing that lets me know at least that there's one nearby, but many times they seem like aimless wallhumping or moon logic that just isn't interesting to find or figure out. I don't really like puzzles and adventure game stuff, so exploration and discovery are usually just lost on me.

Do you guys like secrets? How do you feel about using guides to find secrets? Do you think it's cheating or against the spirit of the game?

I guess I'm a little autistic in that I like playing games as "intended" (within technological reason). That's partly why I like pistol starting; all stock maps have been tested with pistol start, and they seem to play at their most dynamic when played that way. Playing with your weapons carrying over is totally acceptable (the game allows it), but I feel like there's a "right" way to play that gets the most out of it.

But that goes out the window with trying to figure out secrets, so fuck consistency I guess.
