Nope. Peach and Bowser didn't get their current designs until Lost Levels in '86 (pic related).

Do you know why the Super Mario 1 manual doesn't even have any artwork for the characters but instead uses recreation of the in-game pixels? That's because they had no art to use for the manual. It was only with Super Mario 2 Japan that almost everyone looked like they do today.

They don't fear adaptations. They fear western adaptations. Mario has a 30+ year manga, Zelda has regularly had manga since the 80s, Kirby has had manga and an anime, Pokemon has had two anime and over forty manga, etc.

We haven't had many proper western video game adaptations since the 90s. Back then they were very loosely based on the series but now they're more accurate. Still, they tend to be hit or miss.
