Is there any point in owning a Saturn if you don't like fighting games or shmups?

>> No.3518432

It's funny how browsing the library of the Saturn and seeing how it's not even close to all fighting games and shmups is for some reason impossible for people in 2016.

I haven't personally played SatSotN and as such haven't seen the added areas, but the shitty scaling applied to literally everything to make up for the resolution difference between the PS1 and Saturn is a marked decrease in quality overall.

Basically, the PS1 version doesn't have loading times, the Saturn version does. They are however no big deal if you ask me.

>>3519023
>>3519024
It's not just "new areas". There is also new graphics, new musics, new enemies, new items and weapons (including some with their own special attack).
There is also a new move, in the reverse castle you can perform a double-tap running, this alone makes the game twice as fun for me.
Also one of the two areas connect the castle in a way that it avoids a long detour to go from the east side of the castle to the west side.
I love the Saturn version and I think its pros largely make up for its cons. Only setback for me is that it's Jap only, but there are very good guides on the internet for item descriptions and such.

As for loading times. It isn't that the PS1 doesn't have loading times; It does. The difference is the little corridors between areas where that loading happens is tweaked to match the time required by the PS1, and wasn't adjusted for the Saturn.

How the fuck do people import Japanese games on this council and expect to know how to play the complex ones let alone understand what's going on?
Just look at >>3519005
Look at all those amazing looking games that probably have a shit ton of anime cut scenes and stuff.

Do you video game guys seriously spend your years learning Japanese just to play video games like this eventually?
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wachenröder

https://youtu.be/O-xNVp_CM3Q

I've been "learning" japanese for my company. I speak minimal Japanese and by minimal almost nothing. My company is going to fund a year in Japan learning Japanese. I orginally wanted to learn Japanese to participate in the culture. To read novels that aren't released outside of Japan. To watch Japanese movies that will never receive subs.

But to go this far to learn Japanese for video games? Do you do that?

I would love to play untranslated Japanese video games, but who seriously has the fucking time to play video games in the first place once you hit 21 or older?

I use to collect old retro video game consults because I really wanted to play these untapped video games or at least the few rare weeb ones that came over on Sega CD or Saturn, but come senior year of high school I just said fuck it. So much time and money in big bulky games I knew I could torrent.

I am buy fag for weeb shit and memrobelia, but I felt like I was crossing the line to something I wouldn't be able to sustain enough time on ad I was right.

I just fell for the meme and dropped like $150 on the whole setup (console, SCART, pseudosaturn, controllers)

I kinda feel like I got memed. Most ISOs are in weird proprietary formats and/or corrupt and won't burn, going legit's no good retail games are fucking retarded priced and region-locked anyways. They never released a real 3d Sonic and most of the games worth playing are in inscrutable moon runes. I don't care about fighting games, clunky JRPGs, or racing games with poor controls so that's a huge chunk out of the library. Also the saturn lightgun is not particularly accurate and virtua cop 2 has an annoying ~1 second delay before you find out if you actually hit an enemy.

The mk2 controller that gets memed all the time feels okay but isn't really anything special. The top row of buttons feels very different from the bottom row and moving between the two isn't quite seamless. Idc about the six-buttons since I don't play fighting games.

I have a Phoebe on the way for it, maybe I'll like it better once I don't have to burn and keep track of games. I don't regret my purchase too much, because I wanted the original hardware experience for "completeness" reasons of my collection and so I could choose for myself.

If I had a limited budget I think a Sega CD + Sonic CD and some cheesy Night Trap action would have been a better value.

Buy a Dreamcast and a PSX and there is no reason to own a Saturn unless you are really into Shining Force.

It always makes me laugh how people put "Burning Rangers" in "must own" games or ridiculously old arcade ports for that time like "Space Harrier." It's like if the N64's killer app was Galaga.

Hipsters don't like the PSX because it's too mainstream, and they don't like the Dreamcast because it isn't retro enough for them.

Dreamcast is by far the best Sega console, and is up in the running for best console of all time.

Saturn is the failure that launched at $100 more than the PSX and couldn't even deliver decent 3D. People like to claim 3D was somehow 'new to the scene', but there was plenty of good 3D arcade games at that time. Sega released another crappy system because of high R&D and delays instead of starting fresh.

I wish Sega still made consoles. It would be way better than the crap today. They would take chances and innovate instead of releasing a million "FPS, open world, dynamic, multiple ending, paint dry simulators."

Everyone needs to come to terms that the Saturn and 32X were the turds that killed the company.

It did not have a complete development cycle. Sega outsourced it to an external developer, who were actually doing okay, but Sega was about to launch the Dreamcast and wanted to push out all their remaining Saturn ports out fast, so they do not get in the way. This meant that both HOTD and Sega Touring Car were released before development could be finished - they cut corners wherever they could to get it out in time.
