I asked myself the same question, but it's more of a "doom lingo" thing. Wall textures are called textures, but floor/ceiling textures are called FLATS. Hence, flat sprites are sprites that are designed to be rendered parallel to the floor/ceiling.

From a cursory look around, it seems like they are "planes", as in textured polygon quads, that can be rotated around. Like, to make blood stains on the floor, solid laser beams or "explosion ring" effects.

DRLA's six weapon limit had me thinking about what if you had even less guns to work with, like in Halo or something.

In that game though, the player also has grenades available but ammo isn't as abundant and is tied to the weapons carried. By contrast in Doom, we have all kinds of ammo scattered all over the maps that can be stockpiled regardless of what guns you are actually carrying, and only the three kinds of zombiemen carry ammo.

So, my question is how one would handle ammo if the idea is that the player can only hold a few guns that would probably have to be marginally better than what vanilla offers to compensate, but are still encouraged to swap them out semi-regularly.

Man in hindsight I need to rework quite a few GMOTA monsters.

What the fuck was I thinking with the Hellfos, it's nuts to approach them in melee, and before this video I gave the bombs the Bomber knights throw a set amount of HP, meaning they could be destroyed from a powered sword attack and have your own assault literally blow up in your face.

I recommend OBLIGE V7 (WIP build, or if you know how to compile stuff, current git). Make large/massive maps, set enemy spawns to hordes, weapons to more, health/ammo to whatever you like (I prefer less than default), enable music swap module and sky generator, disable pistol starts. They work really well with RPGRLA in my opinion.

I dunno, like I said, I havent played Samsara, but to me, having the character being diverse or autistically accurate doesnt seem as important as having cool characters to play as.

Like say, I'm playing Smash Brothers or even a Marvel VS Capcom style game, Mario or Ryu do not play exactly as they do in their respective games. But that's fine, right ?

I dunno, like I said, never played the mod (partly because I think the roster is too narrow) so... Maybe I'm just not the target audience.

Yes, but for many of these characters it's very difficult to balance without neutering them or having significant overlap. It's a matter of being coherent for the most part and Samsara actually does a good job of this in both single/co-op and even competitive game modes.

For nearly any g ame, there are mods with quality and then there are mods with sheer quantity. I'd take the mod that's much more enjoyable to actually play over a bloated clusterfuck.

I know that we are going into opinions territory, but I disagree, after playing with all of the characters everyone can clearly establish differences between them and how each of them feels, like no one else plays like Blazkowicz, with him having no shotgun, mediocre "Plasma" slot weapon and odd rocket launcher, his real power is MP40 and Chaingun, which makes him a real ammo hog who's strongly reliable on one ammo type.

Or how Duke's damage values are static, there is no damage spread which makes him the most reliable, you always know that perfect shotgun blast will always deal exactly 70 damage, or how his Ripper deals 15 damage per shot. I could easily point out things like this for each character and how that emphasizes each individual character.

That's not true though, BJ has Spear of Destiny, which is rather shit at single target damage, but it creates a ball of light which explodes into small golden projectiles which fly in the air and ricochet off walls while ripping through everything they touch.
Duke on the other hand has 4 explosive weapons which all have distinct use, this is the exact reason why he is titled "The crowd controller", his Devastators are pure DPS with relatively small explosion range, which when put against other Final Weapons serves further to show that he is best at digging his way through any crowd.

It is though, all other characters both in Samsara or in their original games have damage spread, this is actually a reason why people don't like Heretic, some of the numbers are pretty screwed in a very questionable manner, contrary to that character with no actual damage spread feels differently.

Honestly though who thought that kind of enemy would even work in a game like Doom, at least shotgun zombies only shoot once every several seconds and still die to a couple of pistol shots. These dudes not only take quite a couple of hits but drain life fast as fuck, and if you don't spot them, let alone kill them, in less than 2 seconds you're basically dead.
There's a reason in Doom 1 the only enemy with a chaingun is the fucking final boss.

Shotgun Frenzy is awesome actually, I totally love it and it's the first thing I look out for activity when I fire up Doomseeker (which I admit is not often enough).

RGA2 has a few interesting things. I really enjoy the monsters on that one (with humans being able to do a last stand or demons "evolving" at random after being left for dead). I wouldn't put it on a top list, but I find it quite interesting regardless even if just because of that.

I recall one map of doom vacation where you immediately exploded a wall and also a map where you were in a jail cell and if your coop spawn wasn't right you were just fucking stuck. Actually thinking about it I remember two or three jail-cell ish starting rooms, one where you had to find a secret door to escape. And stock Doom II MAP31 for obvious reasons

Truth be told I don't find those kind of starts too memorable, but if you make a jail cell escape too elaborate I suppose it could either get old pretty quick or be too hard to figure out.

For one, ignore most of the dumb ideas everyone posted. Here's what Project MSX needs
-A REAL FUCKING BFG WEAPON, I love the orionsniper rifle but come on, that shit isn't worth the mantle of the BFG (and neither is the alt function of the chimera rifle, its smaller and about as strong as a lv 2 charge grenade). Something like Marathon's wave motion cannon could work or some shit that uses your suit's power and of course, the ammo.
-The armblade thing replacing the chainsaw (right now, what replaces the chainsaw is a damn backpack)
-Inventory items to change suit modes, so you can have invisibility or high speed or mega shield (shield takes less damage but locks your suit energy) or whatever shit
-Alternative mode for the rest of the weapons, like plasma armblade or akimbo pistols or burstfire autoshotgun or grenade launcher for assault rifle (uses your grenades as ammo) or explosive rounds for the raptor shotgun (instead of ripping projectiles) or secondary mode for the autocannon where you have slower rate of fire but you fire 2 rockets per shot.
-Give crouching some love like slides and rolls, hold crouch then tap run button (what makes you dash or spring if holding it), you roll or hold crouch and run and you slide like in vanquish.
-More variants of the mancubus/arachnotron/pain elemental
-BUFF THE EVERLOVING FUCK OF THE ICON OF SIN, legit, the entirely of the bestiary in MSX is hella cool but the icon of sin is still a piece of shit, make it do more or spawn stronger versions of the current monsters along with having 10 times more health so it takes at least 3 fully charged grenades.
-Option to have a non-helmet hud, like just have the numbers people are too casul to manage 2 ammo pools
-Move the reload and zoom to the default keybinds
-Make it zandronum 3.0 compatible (right now, msx is compatible with zan 3.0, please don't make it need a fucking gzdoom devbuild, i'd rather have project msx dead than needing new gzdoom)

This is mostly true. There are rare situations where maps have shootable switches and the like, and that the use of freelook would allow you to use them earlier than intended, or no longer have to worry about precise timing. Most obvious example being Icon of Sin battles.

I might work on it a little bit to get it to that Blood level (voxels, improved functionality, etc.) as the open source version we have right now isn't as developed as the Blood engine. Me neither. I can totally relate to this.

Most of the time you'd have to push your personal views into anything just so I can make a clear judgement on it. Pretty much the only games that become annoying and tedious and, well, bad per se to me are the ones that overemphasize on the story and leave the remainder of the actual interaction with the game to talking to NPCs or overuse scripted events before big deadly fights, but anything other than that is probably a-ok in my book. I don't think there has been /a single FPS/, period, that I have yet to properly form an objective view on to truly sort as 'a hunk of sloppy shit'. I've played and enjoyed every single Doom game to date, I'm fine with Quake 4 as is, I don't think there is anything wrong with Dark Souls, I don't think NMS is a bad game, just sorta bland. long etcetera.

as cliche as it may sound I'd probably be a fan of a lot more videogame franchises if I had any money to buy consoles, or for games on steam. but then I'd need an actual gaming rig to play said games, and since that is just a fucking hassle to pull through just to play anything, I'd much rather stick to classic FPS'.

the only consoles I've ever had in my entire life were a PS2 and a wii.
