For the record, I'm one of the people who think /vr/ should be 1993 and before only, but I accept the 1999 rule because I'm not a spoiled brat like you.

The Playstation/N64 generation will never be retro, because retro games aren't about time; they are about a style of game that existed in an era where gameplay was far more important than stylish, slick presentation. The PS1/N64 era attracted a new generation of "gamers" (all of you) and put the mentality of style over substance being the standard by which games should be judged in your consciousness.

While there is a blurring of games on both sides of that line where some older games are style over substance and newer games were actually good, the year 1995 is the one I always point to as the dividing year /vr/ SHOULD use, with the N64/PS1 generation being the first non-retro generation.

It's sad that so many people born into the N64/PS1 generation disagree with this because they have absolutely no perspective on gaming. I always tell people to force yourselves to play only pre-1995 games -- good and bad, popular and obscure -- for at least a year or two before playing anything newer, because I think it would really give people a true perspective on how games really should be.

>> No.3509952

>>3509931
Try 1982 and before if you want "retro" to actually mean something.

Since we're setting "the record" straight, I didn't even grow up with the PS2. I was raised on the NES and later the SNES/Genesis. I just think it's funny that /vr/ can't provide any justification for the fixed 1999 cutoff other than to specifically exclude certain consoles they don't like. I also find it amusing how easy it is to trigger people with this topic.

'the fuck? I could buy all current-gen consoles, including the best exclusives, and a pretty good TV if I was able to sell my games at those prices. Yep. Gaming Galaxy in Antioch tn. I've only been there twice because they have tons of pinball machines to play there. It was months in between visits and all the same games were for sale. Their inventory makes no fucking sense. Their layout and prices along with organization is an autists nightmare.

They literally sell a bunch of disc only games like Xbox and shit just stacked on top of each other collecting dust and scratched to hell.

Do you have confirmation on this? I ask because I work at a retro game store and I have people try and say this all the time when one, if not two copies of a given game have sold between their visits while they try to talk me down on my prices. But shit there's only one copy of Ninja Gaiden Trilogy in existence, so it has to be the same copy right?

It's not easy to find a good pre-1995 game that has a "bad" style, but it's easy to find a bad game without any style at all. Even Pong had style.
I kinda agree though, post 1995 games have started to be less gamey, but still feel very gamey in comparison to post xbox 360 era. Even early 2000s game like GTA III were still gamey, you got points money in that game for blowing up random cars and causing havoc.

I remember hearing almost exactly that same attitude about the NES and SNES eras. Heck I remember being on old message boards much like this with people saying many of the same things, but with the conclusion that Atari was the pinnacle of gaming and everything has been going to shit since.

It seems to be a never ending cycle. Personally I've been gaming for almost 40 years and think it just keeps getting better. There are many old classics I go back to time and again, but I'm always even more excited for what's new as well.

The GBA is pretty much a portable SNES so it should be allowed plus it has been [x] years now, all of 6th gen is retro by this point. Also Wii is pretty much a GameCube and an extension of 6th gen so it should be allowed as well. And please add the NDS and the 360 too, they were pretty much a portable PS1 Fat and a more powerfull XBOX1 respectively.

32/64-bit shit will always be irrelevant to the formative years of gaming, before the industry was an industry -- when it was the wild fucking west.

And that's what /vr/ is: Buffalo Bill's circus show in the twilight of the frontier. Only the twilight has come and gone; we packed up the Colts and dusters and now we're just looking at old photographs and reading memoirs.

This has nothing to do with anyone's childhood. The period cannot be replicated.
