They must be, it's their product. Just as much as they were involved with Dimps. And since they're sending money, the devs are officially working under contract, therefore they are not independent, thus making any indie-fangame moniker carry absolutely zero contextual sense.

>> No.3489813

>>3489771

You're certainly right there but, given what we know about Taxman and the developers, they only really got to this point due to their independent success and, most recently, the Sonic CD remake. You can think of it as a kind of major label debut - same stuff, bigger budget, actual support.

SEGA seems to have far less corporate meddling than Nintendo, Capcom, Konami or any other big publisher these days, so hopefully it stays on the straight and narrow. It's not out for ages yet anyway, it should at least avert the traditional 'rushed to release' problem.

remake? I thought they just tuned up the programming a little better...did I miss some other things?

>> No.3490645

My list is Sonic 3, Sonic & Knuckles, Sonic 2, Sonic CD, then Sonic 1. Sonic CD was very good looking and sounding, but everything else just didn't mesh; the time travel thing was mostly aesthetic and redundant especially since you can just get all the time stones, and the bad futures are pretty pointless, then the mechanics didn't work together with exploring the level...you know, the usual complaints. Sonic 1 was pretty much a prototype before they balanced the gameplay with level design in Sonic 2, then Sonic 3&K perfected everything (including the special stage).

>> No.3490665

>>3490645
I think they should've just went with the original plan of making a Sonic 1 port for the CD. Better yet, they should've just made it a N64DD-styled expansion pak to the game, kinda like an early CD spiritual predecessor to S&K.

>> No.3490686

The only thing I disagree with. Sonic 2 special stages were the best overall even tho all the special stages in sonic are all kinda garbage IMO.

>> No.3490728

Sonic 3 was always my favourite.

Rest would go something like this:

3 > 2 > CD > 1 > Knuckles > Blast (Saturn) > Spinball

Not really holding a torch for 3&K anymore because I think all the good zones were used in 3. Flying Battery and Mushroom Hill are okay.

I think Knuckles being in Sonic 2 was cooler though.

CD is overrated. People who say CD is the only good Sonic game should be shot.

to be fair, after all these years I still have not played CD, I will eventually and on that day I will have a fair judgement...but I've seen enough gameplay footage to at least have the opinion of "not muh sanic"

Sonic 2 hate is as much of a meme as I assume Sonic CD love is, it was the most popular and many people's favorite so it must be the worst, meanwhile Sonic CD was largely unplayed by the masses so it must be brilliant

Sonic 2 haters just seem asinine to me and the points they come up with for hating it contrived, like people who say Jack Nicholson wasn't the greatest Joker....we all know he was, but some people hate the fact that we know he was so they will try any dumbass argument against it just to be special snowflakes

Sonic doesn't hold up well and in retrospect was pretty gimmicky. The controls are loose, and much of the game, is above average platforming at best. The game doesn't really move as fast and is just used for auto sections that look cool at first, for the time, but get old.

The game can be played fast but that requires memorizing the level. His whole edgy attitude is now annoying and just marketing gimmick. The game relies on speed gimmick, which is mostly automatically done, cool basic momentum based physics, and graphics to overcome the fact that it isnt a great platformer.

To be clear for the time it wasn't a bad platformer, in fact it was good early 90s, but nowhere near Mario games released years earlier. It was already outdated a few years after release and it why Sonic Games struggle today. It was a good but not great game, that relied more on graphics and speed gimmick to overcome the fact it was nothing special. Where I will give it credit is for multiple paths through a level.

By 1995 the gameplay was nothing special, which is why they keep trying to make updated games and failing. Mario, or say Donkey Kong Kountry never had this problem as the gameplay is still good, even for today.

If someone played it today for the first time, they would most likely be unimpressed and not understand what the deal with the game is.

Sonic 2 Comparision

Sonic 2 Virtual Console Wii: Distorted sound
Sega Genesis Collection: Distorted sound, input lag
Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection: Less distorted, but low quality music/sfx and slight input lag
Sonic Mega Collection: Distorted sound
Sonic Mega Collection Plus: distorted sound
Sonic Classic Collection DS: haven't tried

That leaves us with only three good versions:
Sonic 2 2013 iOS
Sonic 2 on Genesis GX for the Wii
Sonic 2 on Sonic Jam

(Sonic Jam works well on SSF)

It is controversial. Lots of people agree with me, many would disagree and would love Sonic. I still feel people mostly like this game due to nostalgia. However, I would love to hear a different opinion on why these games. And I am not saying they are bad, just that they were merely good, and nothing special that uses grahpcis and gimmicks (speed) to hide this, that Sonic games dont hold up well, as well as the concept is dead and no longer fun.

>> No.3493574

>>3493553
It's okay. I feel the same way about most of the Mario games after 3, and I feel as if DKC is still loved for the same reason you feel Sonic is still loved, only with the factor being graphics/music instead of speed as I think the platforming is while decent, isn't much special either. Eh, I thought Crash did the latter's approach to platforming better anyways.

Id disagree about DKC. yes they had good graphics, music, and gimmics but at its heart they had great gameplay that sitll holds true today.

The problem is Sonic didnt have great gameplay. It was merely good, for its time. It was 7 out of 10 at best, it got another +2-3 for graphics and gimmicks, at the time. That is why by mid-90s they stopped making them. The graphics and speed gimmick no longer gave that +2-3 and they had a slightly above average game.

>The problem is Sonic didnt have great gameplay. It was merely good, for its time.
And while I don't disagree, I still feel the same about DKC as well. While being being a visual and audio marvel technically, gameplay-wise it isn't really "great" so much as "just decent and playable", which is what I felt best described Rare's platformers from that point onward.

I recall hearing some of the levels had slowdowns not present in the original. Also, although some of the sound effects have been obtained from the original pre-FM incarnations, the music tracks run at 22050hz 8bit (probably, same for effects), they have an hard time looping/resuming properly, and every other music track will fuck the previous one up.
