What was Half-Life's multiplayer like? I don't play multiplayer shooters anymore but I'm just curious about how it played. I've read Game Boys, but a book about Counter-Strike isn't really a good frame of reference about Half-Life's multiplayer.

Pretty poor, horrendous weapon balance, unfocused maps, huge reliance on hitscan.

The entire server list was empty save for a Five Guys map.

I was a competitive CS guy mostly but I found Half-Life DM to be really weird, unbalanced, and not fun.

I liked other mods a lot more. Day of Defeat was great, as was the WWI mod and even the Revolutionary War and Paintball ones were good.

Me and my CS bud would play it on CS breaks.

Also, there's a game about counter-strike...?

I got it as a gift a few years ago and found it an interesting read, despite being written from an entry level position. Pretty neat if you're interested in esports or compLexity.

Me and my friend have been playing tons of old school dod lately it's tons of fun.

I used to play half life dm but I played more opposing force dm because of more weapons.

When I was in high school I used to bring my retail counter strike disc to school and play half life dm with some other bro on the library computers. The vice principal caught us once while we were skipping class and asked what we were doing. My friend told him we were training for the army he tried not to grin and gave us shit and told us not to do it again.

First off, making a deathmatch game using the exact same weapons as the singleplayer is pretty hilarious because it's a direct port with no real sense of balance, although there are some minor changes like a red dot scope on the revolver. It is exactly what you expect, abuse of gauss rifle charged shots, egon gun kills people quicker than a Quake lightning gun, random ass snarks and tripmines. Continuing this theme of Half-Life singleplayer gimmicks, you will find more of it in the maps like driveable mining carts, a nuke bunker that you can push a button, lockdown, hog the door sequence, and watch the nuke kill literally every other player in the server. It's silly but it's fun in a downtime sort of way. Don't be a tryhard and do nothing but instagib people with gauss rifles.

>> No.3488973

I was pretty fun. The level where you could activate a bunker and nuke the map was funny. Very much a casual sort of experience.

Holy shit some awful fucking opinions in this thread. I get it, you guys hopped on a /v/ server for a hour and played nothing but Crossfire and decided the game was jank. You're selling it way short though. There was plenty of room for movement techniques especially with gauss jumping, and complaining about hitscan is pretty silly when pretty much every multiplayer FPS of that era had hitscan up the wazoo. Of course HLDM wasn't ultra-hardcore competitive like Quakeworld but it wasn't a random clusterfuck either, and there were tons of creative maps with awesome setups and layouts beyond "lol nuke button."

my 1.6 account got vac banned years ago because my CS bro and I shared accounts for everything and he let his fucking friend use my 1.6 account who got it banned.

I have a real life now and can't afford to get into multiplayer games anymore, but every few months I'll install DoD Source and play for a day and then uninstall it lol. 1.6 is better in some ways for dod.

You wanna know what HLDM was like? Go search for "quadrazid" on youtube and watch some of his 1v1s. Those guys are completely insane. And yes the game relies heavily on hitscans, you can see how much they abuse the guass guns massive hitscan damage with the secondary fire (charge), and the fact that it hits through walls.

Why do people keep saying this as if most games don't?

UT had some super fast green gel weapons, and everyone has grenade/rocket launchers, but pistols/shotguns/rifles/smgs are almost always hitscan in everything. Tribes 1 and 2 are the only exception I can think of where everything has an actual projectile except for the laser rifle.

It's ridiculously fun with friends for me, we enjoy it.

Personally we enjoy op4 dm as it adds a few more fun things.

>> No.3491180

it was basically shit, you would have people jumping around in a small room with the crowbar and camp the health station. revolver was over powered if you had accuracy, and there were a lot of maps where the crossbow would spawn in an area with only one entrance to defend but could snipe the entire map.

Quakecon is still the biggest lan party every year, so it's still Quake 3/Quake Live.

I could be wrong but I don't think any major MOBA allows offline play, unless it's at a big tournament.
