Are there any good retro games with a good drifting mechanic? I want to DOMINATE those turns.

Ridge Racer Type 4 has the best in the series but it's on rails.

For real drifting you might want to try Racing Lagoon or even Gran Turismo 1/2.

From the top of my mind I can only remember that, but focusing in drift mechanics only started with full strength during the 6th gen, you'll find more titles that appeal you there.

Its a visual novel/racing game on the Sega Saturn that is really enjoyable. You don't even have to play the visual novel portion of the game. After finishing the race the replay has initial d like cut ins.

It's funny because it's the older Ridge Racer games and the newer Ridge Racer games that are "on rails." Ridge Racer Type 4 is the one that isn't on rails, its drift-tuned drifting shoots you quickly and recovers quickly, making it feel rigid. Meanwhile the "on rails" feeling you are describing, present in OTHER games I mentioned, can be described as a Tony Hawk grind balance meter but you have to feel it out because there's no visual indicator.

But to answer OP, GRID 1 has godly drifting. Drifting as close to the flags as possible or just feathering it with your bumper and scoring maximum points and multiplier is insanely fun.
