Can we get a good ol' RE thread going? I'm currently replaying Code Veronica. Which one is your favorite, /vr/?

>> No.3478818

1. RE1
2. RE2
3. CV
4. RE3

Nemesis is my least favorite just because of all the backtracking through similar looking alleyways in the first half. It gets much better once you reach the clock tower.

I'd love to see a Code Veronica remake with a better script and voice acting. Alfred and Alexia had a lot of potential as villains but the Dreamcast era voice acting really killed it. CV has a lot going for it though. Probably my overall favorite RE soundtrack.

3, Nemesis a best
he should have worked more like the scissorman in the PS clocktower - appear if you wait too long in the same place
his appearances could've been more random for replay value
just my opinion

Yeah, would've been neat if some appearances were randomized. Still though, the first playthrough without a guide was the most intense survival horror experience I ever had.

Some encounters are "semi random".
For instance, in the street part with the firetruck and the gate that requires the 2 jewels, you might either get dogs or crows jumping out of the window.

This happens about 4-5 times in the game and is totally random (doesn't depend on the player's actions), however it's always a choice between 2 things.
This also happens with some items, for instance at the RPG you may get the Grenade Launcher or the Colt, and you'll get the other one at the electric power facility. Then, some powders, herbs, and a bit of ammo too, can be in different places.

One of my biggest regrets in life is never playing the RE games when they were new. At the time I was focused on just RPGs and the PSX was full of them so I never branched out. I never played them until this year and damn, they hold up well. All were still great. I just wonder how much more I would've liked them had I played them when they were new and cutting edge.

I like code but it's where a lot of the main problems of the series come from.

First off bringing Wesker back was a HUGE mistake and it was where they started the whole LET'S GET UMBRELLA thing. Which was really, I think, missing the point of survival horror.

I say this a lot but the environment should be the primary antagonist with humans just be another "monster." Umbrella worked best when it was just some faceless evil that got hoisted by it's own petard and died at the hands of it's own creation while forming the backstory. They're not supposed to be Cobra

The other thing that bugs me about CV is that it's a step back from RE3 in some ways. Yeah the power of the Dreamcast made for a really good looking game at the time but some of the the omissions were kind of baffling. Especially going back to having to press the action button to climb stairs.

agree, but i do love resi 3. probably the game i end up with the most ammo at the end. idm the backtracking, (especially once u find the 2 massive "secret" gunpowder stashes near the start).

>>3478829
i do like CV, but it has the weakest plot imo. i always tend to lose interest once i reach the artic, and it was the beginning of wesker becoming the joke that he was in 5.

>>3479116
the "itchy, tasty" file has a special place in my heart. resi 1 nailed the creepy atsmophere, moreso than any other game in the series. so much intrigue and mystery.

>>3479259
dont wanna rub it in but you really did miss out. playing resi 1 when it first came out is a memory i'll never forget. i was probably around 10 at the time, and back then, it seems videogames like resi, mgs1, dino crisis, took me fucking ages to complete. same with smb3. i really do miss those days.

just a quick summary of my first experience with resi1: after what seemed like monthes of stumbling around i made it to the guardhouse. no ammunition, too young and dumb to find the secret stashes, next to no ink ribbons. finally got to plant 42, killed that fucker and back to the mansion it was. out of ink ribbons. my last save is at the guardhouse. hunters become a thing. pretty much gave up. loved the game but man was it hard as fuck. one year passes and i complete resi 2 to death. go back to resi 1, nail it.

In short:
- 2 game modes, classic and DS. classic is pretty much the original game. DS is a new way to go through the mansion, like Director's Cut, with new item and enemy placement, etc. All the puzzles where replaced by touchscreen stuff, and sometimes when you enter a room you're FORCED to fight a first person knife combat.
Honestly, the new puzzles are shit. They're like the kind of eductional toys you give to toddlers, like "put the square shaped thing into the squared shaped hole", baby stuff. It sucks.
The first person knife mode also suck, in several aspects. Not only they are by definition "anti survival horror", but even gameplay it's terrible and I figured out you could just keep spamming diagonal knife cuts to win it all, and fast.

Now, the good stuff:
- all 3D models, enemies and characters, were redone from scratch and look really good.
- New moves: 180° degree turn, RE4 style knife use which does not take place in the inventory.
- Reworked zombie AI, they're harder to dodge.

These 3 points also work in "classic" mode, which makes the game very different with the original, but it's good stuff. Just not something i'd recommend to someone who wants to discover RE1 like it was back then.

Also, you can skip doors AND cutscenes. Only version of RE1 in which you can skip cutscenes. Makes it super fast.

Also there are 2 co-op mini games using the link cable. Never tried them myself. All I know is your coop partner appears appears as a star on your screen, not his 3D model...
In these modes you can play as ANY character from both Alpha and Beta teams.

If you're playing on emulation or using a flashcart, you can easily swap models around and therefore play the game as any character from both Alpha and Beta teams. On PC you can do that too (pic related), and use gameshark codes on console for the same result, but here it's easier and it's not just limited to Rebecca/Barry, you can play as anyone using this trick; and it's easier to do.

>> No.3480895

>>3480884
Well the director's cut version is the only one available on PSN. Most people here would probably tell you to either emulate the original 1996 version or just go with REmake. It's fun to play the original version after finishing REmake just to see how much they changed.

>> No.3480910

>>3480884
I love both versions but I find it hard to recommend one over the other.
The original was from another time and depending on who you are you may need to have to put it back into its context to truely enjoy it. It came out at a time when games were starting to try and be more like interactive movies and in that regard, I think it had a role as important as a game like MGS, but that side of things is often overlooked nowadays. The absence of HUD and the way the story/endings/NPCs sytem work was almost as influence as the way it refined the Alone In The Dark style and expanded on it to make it on par with action games of the time.

At the very least, RE1 should be played only because it was an influencial game for the 2 generations to come; even if it didn't invent much, it nailed things perfectly and set a new standard. Kinda like OoT.

None of this can be said for the REmake. It's a great game though, and besides it is better appreciated if you have already played the original. The devs kinda played on players expectations of the original.

Give Deep Fear and Countdown Vampires a try. They have flaws but they're the most decent clones of the era.
The truth is, most clones are either very subpar or broken/unfinished (Evil Dead: Hail To The King, Martian Gothic...)

Forgot to mention Overblood. It's not a RE clone, it was developped at the same time and was just as much inspired by AITD than RE, if not more.
It's got many similarities with RE while being developed at the same time (even an important part of the story is the same at one point) , which I find fascinating.
