It always annoyed me that merchants in The Dragon's Trap are chain-smoking pirate devil pigs but they feel entitled to refuse showing you their best merchandise if your charisma points are too low

Magical Quest is a good one. Was the 1/2 magic use permanent or only for one level/till the next continue btw?

Pic related, the orignal RPG jew. His name was translated in German into "Raffi"which can almost be translated into "Greedy", although it is more like a play on words in German.

Combination of three factors:
- Not having the manual, therefore not knowing what any the items do
- Not being very good at the game, therefore never getting enough hearts to buy and try them
- A lot of imagination and speculation

The feather in pic might actually let you fly, or jump higher, or who knows? The barrel you stock potions in could potentially be used to roll around in while invincible, or even something better.

Even though this was the case for a lot of games with cool looking shop items, Kid Icarus is the one I think of first.

Niji no Silkroad (Rainbow Silkroad) is a famicom-exclusive RPG where you play as a traveling merchant in south Asia. A lot of the game revolves around buying goods from one settlement and selling them for more money in other settlements. You have to watch your water supply while travelling long distances in the desert, you can purchase animals to carry more goods when travelling, and hire guards to protect the merchandise from enemies.

Also defeating mobs doesn't get you XP, but permit points. Gather enough and you can cash them in for a permit to peddle the luxury good of a region, which rakes in a heap more cash than regular wares, which you can then spend on better gear for you and your crew.

Pretty neat twist on grinding.

This mother fucker bugged me out when I was a kid. He sits in his shop, smokes, and sells keys. That's all he does, and this blew my mind as a kid. Plus all the merchants in this game blinked constantly when they talked to you.
