Is there a big difference between the PC Engine models? I bought PC Engine Duo and is it worse than the Duo R?

>> No.3461509

Original duos just need cap replacements sooner than most other electronics would but it's the same hardware otherwise. Don't listen to duo-r memers

This. Get them done by a professional if you're not good though. It's really easy to fuck things up when the caps are already on their way out.

No just get the caps replaced, same exact hardware.

Usually no. Between the PC Engine and Coregraphx the only change is the RF output being replaced by a composite + audio AV port.
The difference between the CD-ROM2 and Super CD-ROM2 is just the uglier design (imo the CD-ROM2 unit looks really cool) that plugs directly on the back of the console instead of needing an interface (though the interface is kinda useful for the white PC Engine as it allows the console to output composite + sound instead of RF). Also, the later was shipped with the Super System card, while you had to purchase it separately if you bough the former.
As for the duo models I don't know enough about them.

The original Duo had some of the caps too close to the power supply circuitry, which caused them to overheat. Coupling this with the fact that the Duo was manufactured during the era of shitty cap quality, and some of those will burn out sooner rather than later.

Usually, it's the sound caps that burnout first, but there are only a handful of places online that tell you which ones those are.

Console5 sells a cap kit and has free downloads of the schematics, but it doesn't say which cap does what. You'll also have to buy a special screwdriver bit to safely remove the screws (the "melted pen" trick is stupid meme shit that doesn't work).

If you're not good at soldering, get a pro to do it, especially if the caps are already leaking.

Melted pen works about once it does work on Gameboy carts. I have the tool to open those now but it did work in a pinch

So if I want to get into PC Engine would it make sense to pick up a Coregraphx with AV out?

Duo has more ram than the regular models.

Isn't it just because it had the Super system card already integrated to the machine?

if you're not bothered about cd yeah

White PC Engine + CD-ROM2 unit + interface suitcase = best looking PC Engine setup. The CD-ROM2 unit might be one of the best looking CD add-on.

the cd player in this is supposed to be unreliable as shit though

Get that meme trash out of here. Everyone who isn't an underage b& knows that those polygons aren't drawn in real time. Plus, the gameplay is boring and the music is generic as fuck.

North American TG16 with CD addon is my consolefu. 2nd place goes for Genesis + CD1.

remember that the bigass expansion port on the back of the pc engine can get you all the AV out you want (at least for composite, just like the coregrafx)

yes, it looks nice but it's the least reliable, functional, and economical choice
