What's the best way to play this now?
I have the HD version on Steam but everything is too tiny and doesn't scale well to high res screens.

i played this in 1999 with 17" CRT 1280x1024
337mm wide for 1280 pixels

21" lcd 1920x1080
420mm wide for 1920 pixels..EQUIVALENT TO
337mm wide for 1530 pixels

growth from 1280 to 1530, 250px or 20% more density

if you had a +- 22" 4k display, you could do a 3x upscale on the graphics and have 1000px per 337mm horizontal, so 20% bigger sprite pixels than what you were used to in 1999, to compensate for you ruined eyes, hehehehh.

perhaps even some gameranger like some faggot will probably recommend, even thought there are like 10-20% of ppl in there compared to voobly, but its simpler for dumb faggot, the program is just 1 window with a match-list showing as opposed to a handful of IRC-like windows with match-list showing categorizes by RTS-style (DM, RM, custom etc)

http://aoccs.net/ uses your steam version to make a gameranger/voobly compatible "classic aoe2"

you still play in high resolution, since there is no "HD" in steamAoe2, high resolution was avaiable before that, created by players, when playing in ranger/voobly you just gotta chose patch 1.4 instead of 1.0c to use any resolution instead of just 800/1024/1280
