Hey /vr/, I recently tried restoring a model 2 Genesis, and while everything seems to almost work, every time I try to start a game I either get pic related, and it remains on that screen, or I just get blackness. I've tried over 30 cartridges with no consistency between any of them as to how reliably they'll show the "produced by" screen, or blackness.

I'm not sure what's wrong, does anyone know what it could be? I highly doubt it's the cartridges, so my only guess is there's something wrong with the console itself.

pls 2 halp

I have the exact same problem with mine. I have tried reflowing the whole board. Good luck anon

This.
Cover the good caps in silly putty and put that shit in the oven.
Replace the caps that need replacing.

Not bad, actually.

OP, you got a bad model. You'll need to get another unit.

Model 2s are cheap like that because they are the worst Genesis units.

Care to explain why/how? I genuinely don't know. Would this mean the first gen models are the best?

can someone explain what this will do/how you will know which are the good caps other than individually checking every one.

Something about the sound chip/circuitry being inferior to that of the MD1 as well as the lack of a native RGB support.

You have tried putting the carts in... ah softly? I'm not sure how to put it. But have it so the pins are barely making contact instead of shoved in all the way. You'll have better results.

I've aquired 'dead' consoles that work fine to this day, the previous owners just didn't jiggle carts around enough to get them to read properly. Never push them in all the way is all I can say.

Firstly, you'd use poster putty/blu-tack, not silly putty. Heating the board to a high enough temperature will melt the solder and "reflow" it, hopefully rejoining any cracked solder joints. This method is not recommended unless you don't care if the board is fucked. Id use a heatgun over an oven too.
The reason the caps are covered in putty is high heat plus capacitors = exploded caps.
You can inspect the caps visually, look for raised tops. Easy to replace though.

Clean your cartridges with deoxit/rubbing alcohol + q tips and also clean your systems contacts. Do it until they come clean.

On the off chance it isn't that, the systems cartridge connector can get lose over time and needs to be re-tightened.

How much better are the genesis 1 graphics compared to later iterations?

i need help you guys.
im searching for a pc game free download. i think in the name it has a number included. it was very sciency and you could simulate minerals, almost like alchemy but more elaborate. one key feature was the clone button, when an element was in touch with it, it would keep running unlimited on its own.
any sauce would be greatly appreciated!

What's reflowing? Do you just heat up the whole board and make all the solder melt and fall off? Or does the solder just resettle with better connections?

This. But putting the whole board is retarded meme shit. There's a reason you never hear of professionals doing this.

It happens with every cartridge based console, m8. A front loading NES suffers from it a lot worse than any Sega console due to the design.

And yes, it happens on the SNES.
