doom 64 was my favorite of the franchise and IMO the best of the series, anyone else agree?

>> No.346202

I liked it. It wasnt a port but an original campaign and the weapons had a better design. My only problem was that some of the levels were a little too dark.

its was doom 3 before doom 3

>> No.346261

Get out of my head OP. I downloaded Doom 64 and played it for the first time last night. I was pleasantly surprised. I've been playing it ever since.

Kinda wish I had tried it earlier, because it's a legit Doom experience. Also, I'll echo the complaint about it being too dark. Gotta go into the options and turn the brightness all the way up.

>> No.346270

>>345519
The levels felt too cramped and small and the walking speed felt poor compared to the originals. Other than that, it was a pretty cool experience.

>> No.346286

It's legit, and the N64 puts out some damn good looking enemy and weapon sprites. But I don't feel its as solid as the original.

>> No.346593

have u tried the PC port?
http://doom64ex.wordpress.com/

>> No.346869

The level designs range from really good to needlessly confusing, but the aesthetics and style are definitely the best DOOM has ever been. Hell is a much richer setting than in the previous games and DOOM has never felt any more haunting. Aubrey Hodges sound design is marvelous, and DOOM 64 manages to have a terrifying atmosphere despite its simplicity.

I'd say this is the only shooter on the n64 that holds up. The PC ports are even better. This is my personal favorite DOOM game and is easily a must play for any true doom murderhead.

>> No.347147

funny, waiting on my copy I ordered from ebay. good on you op, can't wait. once i beat it, then I might look into the total conversion for pc, since it has more levels.

>> No.347193

>>347147
It's not a TC anon, it's basically a direct port, you even use the Doom 64 rom so it can extract game data before running.

It's also damn good, and very faithful.

>> No.347856

>>347193
Nice, I'll definitely get around to playing it once I beat the 64 version first.

>> No.347905

I disagree. DOOM II was the best in the series imho, but I'll tell you this much: DOOM 64 was what DOOM 3 should have been. Anyway, enjoy your good taste, sir.

h-h-hey guys, can I come out to rip and tear?

>> No.347957

I disagree. It had a nice atmosphere and music but the game had secrets that were both way too generous and easy to find. By the third level I had a rocket launcher, chaingun, chainsaw, super shotgun, 200 health, and the ammo backpack with nearly maxed out ammo for most of the guns. Was playing on the difficulty before the highest if that matters into the secrets at all.

>> No.347991

>>347938
No, no you cannot. You are blocky and slow, even if your music is good.

I vastly prefer the 32X port of Doom, even with its missing content and shitty music, because it runs so much smoother than the SNES version, and is still fun to play

>> No.348040

>>347991
Honestly the 32X port was not that bad. All the ports at the time had missing content so it's not like you can shit on the 32X exclusively for that. It seems like people target only the music when talking about it. Granted once the PS1 port came out the 32X one was pretty much useless but it is still no where near as bad as people make it out to be. If anything people should be shitting all over the Saturn port. That one is nearly unplayable.

It is just the PS1 Doom but with a really slow choppy frame rate. It is really inexcusable too because the Saturn handled games like Quake and Hexen perfectly fine.

>> No.348162

>>348040
The 32X port plays great, looks good, and runs fast. Really, in 1994, what more could you expect from a home console? The Jaguar port was great, but very few people had Jaguars. Granted, not a ton had 32Xs, but it was still a good port.

I still find it fun to play even today.

That's one thing Doom 64 lacked...the red cartridge.

My dad was a huge Doom fan (so was/am I, to be fair) and I remember preordering it with him at Electronics Boutique. We had it for SNES and the computer but damn did we love Doom. Doom 64 was really well done for a console version. Hours and hours of fun.

EX, because it's a direct port with the expected enhancements a PC version would have. It's more recent, better programmed, doesn't come in tow with the not-too good community additions the absolution had thrown in (especially the monsters added), and EX is still being worked on.

>> No.350263

>>350240
It's a 1:1 port of the N64 game, with the expected PC centric improvements. and a few small additions like directional damage indicators (because there was no face to indicate damage direction in d64). I believe it runs on a version of the zdoom engine, modified to support d64 stuff like floors over floors.

http://doom64ex.wordpress.com/

He's also working on a proper turok port of the n64 game. Which if you don't know, the PC port was rather shitty. He aims to support stuff like coop, multiplayer, and modding with his latest project, TurokEX.

>> No.350267

>>350240
It's closer to the original N64 version, you can play it as the N64 version with a gamepad, or with a Keyboard and Mouse like Classic Doom, it also adds features like Widescreen support, uncapped framerate, optional freelook and jumping, and a multiplayer feature (i haven't tried that one out).

The guy who made the port even created a special version of Doom Builder to make custom levels for Doom64 EX, there are some levels for it uploaded on the /idgames archive if you are interested.

>> No.350279

i dont know what any of that stuff means lol

>I believe it runs on a version of the zdoom engine, modified to support d64 stuff like floors over floors.

No, it uses a custom engine called Kex Engine, which it was based on an old Doom port called Doom3D (Doom with Direct3D features), but the code has been re-writen to a degree that is just it's own thing.

He even has plans to port it to the Nintendo DS (there is a video of it somewhere).

Fair enough but:

Music is ambient / creepy. Very enjoyable to listen to. I'll always appreciate the original doom soundtrack.

Difficulty? I didn't find the game to be very hard but far from 'easy'.

Horrible sprites I disagree with, along with the music that's what sets doom 64 apart from the pc counterpart. I don't see how the sprites are horrible at all.

I tried it out for a little bit and the levels do remind me of Quake. Lots of narrow corridors and just slightly strafing from side to side in those corridors. Also makes it easy to mow down a ton of guys at once with the super shotgun.

Though the Lost Souls are on steroids.
