this game makes no sense

>> No.3450380

It represents the illogical nature of dreams.

>> No.3450392

It's a game about the concept of entities living amongst the collective subconscious dreamscape existing between human minds (like a being that somehow consists of only electromagnetic wave patterns and can only live in the human brain). A malicious entity uses nightmares to cause psychosomatic illnesses in humans in order to feed off of their negative emotions which sustain it's existence. NiGHTS is a particular dream entity of the same general type that happens to feed specifically off of the feeling of "courage" which takes the form of red "ideya" which is a made up word for those floating colored balls that come out of the heroes. Using courage and joining together with NiGHTS you reclaim other stolen facets of the ego like hope or intelligence, and regain the ability to self actualize and confront your inner fears.

Integral to the plot is the idea that courage was the only trait that couldn't be stolen, so even in the depths of depression and anxiety you could still come back if you brought forth courage from within yourself.

>> No.3455893

The game is to score as many points as possible using your flying and aerial acrobatics skills to collect orbs and fly through hoops.

If you collect orbs and fly through hoops in quick succession, you start a "chain" which adds a score multiplier. Maintaining long "chains" is therefore the aim of the game; on some levels, a continuous "chain" can be wrapped right round to your starting point and continued from there without a break, enabling gigantic scores.

I read back in the 1990s that Shigeru Miyamato played a bit of NiGHTS at E3. When asked about it, he said he enjoyed it, but felt the game was "in my opinion, unfinished".

I agree with him; the game is unfinished.

I'll bite; The PS1 is more like an inbetween NES/SNES where while it was technically inferior from a graphical standpoint in comparison to it competitor (akin to the NES), it still managed to get a very good and lengthy library full of games that pretty much appeal to almost every market around at that time (akin to the SNES).

The N64, however I find was more of a spiritual successor to the MS than anything; take that as you will.

I think all games on the Saturn were unfinished though. Those were insane years for Sega, the people in charge were complete assholes during those times. Sega never really recovered from the Saturn.

>> No.3456151

>>3456136

Actually with regard to Sega's 1st party titles you may unfortunately be correct.

Arcade ports like Sega Rally, Virtual On, Virtual Fighter 2 etc were technically brilliant (both in terms of gameplay and effective use of the Saturn hardware) but very bare bones in terms of extra content, modes, options etc for home console users.

Sonic Team's efforts like NiGHTS and Burning Rangers were innovative but very short and lacking in content.

It's weird because Saturn was overall my favourite console of all time with my favourite games, but I have to concede Nintendo do make much more "complete", rounded titles for home gamers.

It's a demo disc that was mailed out with magazines for free back in the day, it's it's own thing. If you've played the steam Christmas NiGHTS then they're functionally the same, you're just missing some neat extras.

Still, if you're emulating and not trying to buy a copy, there's no reason not to. Even if just for the novelty of seeing the first time Sonic was ever playable in full 3D.

>> No.3468425

Nights makes sense if you like score attack games like pinball. Basically if you like playing a game just to see how many points you can get. I would put the bullet hell shooters in that category too. Never really got into it myself despite having it for PS2. It's an okay game, but I got bored really quickly despite getting A ratings. Doesn't help that the game is so short.

>> No.3468927

I have never received an A rank at nights. Nights is hard as fuck, unless they toned down the ps2 version or something.

Its kind of strange that they rereleased it for the ps2, but not the gamecube. I mean, when you have the sonic adventure games ported to the game cube as well as billy hatcher.
