3450298 No.3450298 [Reply] [Original]

I'm trying to introduce my friend to the Resident Evil series
Should he start with the original release? or the REmake?
I've played both myself but I feel like he's missing out on what made resident evil great the dialogue and FMV's
but then again REmake is a better "game" and he's the type of person who never played them and boohoo's tank controls
We'll be playing them together as sort of a spooky season start.

remake.

I say start with the original. It's not like the game is that long, anyway. I'm pretty sure it doesn't even take ten hours to beat. After that, you guys can beat the remake. The original will be way more fun to play together because you can fun of the dialogue and stuff.

I'd go for RE2 directly; more accessible, and it can stand on its own storywise. Then backtrack to the first one

Resident Evil 2 is so fucking good and such an awesome expansion on the original that I'd be tempted to say the same thing other than fear of setting the standard too high. If dude doesn't like RE2 on Dreamcast, he's not going to like Resident Anything.

RE1 isn't even difficult and is different enough from REmake for you to consider playing both of them.

REmake is also harder at the beginning of the game and more likely to turn off newbies. Start him off with the RE1 version of your choice. Just don't make it the Director's Cut.

>> No.3451249

You're not getting the right start to the Resident Evil experience unless you're siting through the incredible 90s FMVs and unrivaled voice acting of the first game. Remake is great but there's no experience like the original.

REmake is hundreds times better than the original because you dont have to spend half of the game carrying keys and opening unskippable door cutscenes.

I would argue that the hardness for newbies made it scarier and improved the experience. I don't think you can blanket-statement say all difficulty is bad for casual enjoyment. It's not hard in a frustrating-video-game way, it's hard in a frightening, holy shit I should actually be afraid of these fucking zombies way.

Did we play the same REmake?

Besides, whichever game you find better is subjective. The experiences are so different that they might as well be considered different games. It's like comparing Castlevania 1 to Super Castlevania 4.

>> No.3451370

The RE vs REmake argument is the great revealer on whether you're here because you like good games that are old, or if you think being old makes a game good by itself. The dialogue being so bad it's funny is the only reason to visit the original, and that only makes it a curiosity to explore later, not a starting point for someone who actually wants a horror game.

>The RE vs REmake argument is the great revealer on whether you're here because you like good games that are old, or if you think being old makes a game good by itself.

No it's not. I played RE1 for the first time about 2 years ago and enjoyed it. It's a well put together game.

Also, if he has time to post on 4chan, he has time to play both games.

>> No.3451394

I started with RE3 as a kid and it makes me think RE3 is actually a really good starting point. It's a mostly easy game, with some scary boss fights that a new player can choose to run like hell away from. Its control mechanics are also smoother and more forgiving than any of the classic series - you have a quick-turn, you run up stairs like ground, you have auto-aim, and just pressing the button to draw your weapon will dodge enemy attacks, resulting in lots of free dodges without even meaning to (I literally didn't understand the dodge mechanic at all for like 3 playthroughs but it was helping me all the way). It doesn't spoil a whole lot about the other games either, other than Jill (and Brad lel) survive to that point. The fact that you have the weapons and ammo to fight plentiful monsters, and how it's sort of randomized each time makes it feel like an arcadey version of RE gameplay.

>> No.3451402

>>3451370

>not a starting point

It's the first fucking game, of course it's a starting point. The franchise/genre wouldn't have even taken off if it wasn't an enjoyable romp. The same charm you mentioned is also prevalent in varying levels though the whole series, so you might as well get used to it early.

start with REmake, but maybe play on 'hiking' difficulty if your friend isn't familiar with survival horror. that game is the best possible introduction to the series. there is nothing 'spooky' about the original RE, its just funny.

from there move on to RE2 (try one of the later versions, the n64 and dreamcast ports are both fantastic). after that i'd say give classic RE1 a shot for laughs and novelty, or just move straight to RE3.

As long as you play it how it's meant to be played, with classic controls and 4/3 aspect ratio, it's the best version of the game, yes.

The new control scheme are a cheat, against the original rules of the game. Look how much easier it is with it to bait a zombie in order to safely go past it.

OP here
We had to push the chilling and playing it back a bit but it's the "next" thing on the list
I decided on the original
because i have a feeling knowing him if I was to start with the REmake he might not feel inclined to go back and check out the original
Plus he actually has no frame of reference of how cheesy the cutscenes are so this will be a treat
Doing the Ultimate Director's Cut mod that puts the original soundtrack back in but has all the bonus stuff the director's cut has.

Why do people recommend the GC version of REmake? Wii version is better since it supports 480p (GC version is 480i only) , is all on one disc and has GameCube Controller, Classic Controller Pro, Wii Remote + Nunchuk and sideways Wii Remote all as controller options.

Original first version, for that wonderfully awful C-movie voice acting.

How can they possibly experience Resident Evil and miss out on the Jill Sandwich?

The tank controls are a thing through 1-3, and you'll get used to them. REmake should also be played, and don't forget Code Veronica: X.

The one thing I liked the best about the Wii version is that you could pause by pressing the Wii menu button.

In the original GC version, the only way to pause and stop the timer was to open the disk tray. Not very convenient when you're trying to go beat the game in less than 5 or 3 hours.

Also, the D-Pad of the Classic Controler is good to play the game. Not that it matters to me since I have a converter to use a PS2 pad on GC .

There's enough ammo to get you through, but not all of it's in plain sight (for example, there are shotgun shells in a corner next to one of the beds in the room that you find the lighter in). Search thoroughly, and try to evade some enemies rather than kill every last one (even when you've gotten a decent amount of ammo, you may find it easier/faster just to run past enemies in some parts of the game).
