None of the ports ever quite captured the feel of the original C64 game. There was always something missing.

One of the first games I played. Didnt know english back then and that scene scared the shit out of me. Some crazy bitch going after me while there was a chainsaw on the wall covered with blood.

DHGR mode is really CPU-intensive which is why there's no sound or scrolling.

Lot less disk access though. Well, the C64 MM has a fastloader so it's not too bad. Still, the 16-bit versions are hard disk installable and the Apple II one has custom disk routines for super fast load time.

Looks like this was inspired by the NES version since the original computer ports didn't give the Edisons off-color skin.

>> No.3449934

This game took a ridiculously huge amount of time to develop for the standards of its time. Ron Gilbert's early design notes are dated from the spring and summer of 1986 and the game shipped in October 87. He said it took so long he was lucky they didn't get fired.

>> No.3449942

>>3449934
"In the beginning, adventure games were just text-based because that was all that could be done with the hardware available. You got a scene description and had to type some command like 'get key' or 'walk south'. Then Sierra started including pictures in their games. I was visiting my cousin over the holidays (of 1985) and played King's Quest on his computer. Now you had full graphics, animation, and sound, but you still had to type commands at a prompt. I felt this was only taking it halfway. Part of my design innovations came about because I'm a lazy guy and I hate to type."

It doesn't even have to be sexual. I remember a story here where a boy pulled a girl's hair and they were throwing around the word rape. Shit has gotten so far out of hand with these liberals in charge, I swear.

Zak McKracken, now that tried too hard to be an epic but like Maniac, they had limited disk space and just had to pad the game out with giant-ass mazes.

They didn't put Zak on the Apple II for whatever reason (technical issues?) but given how lame Maniac Mansion is on there, it really isn't missed much.

Zak is kind of an awkward game; Fox was obviously super hyped about the potential of their brand new genre, but didn't quite "get" how to channel it through a proper game design.

This is a game that lets you sleep in your bed, turn on your tv and open your fridge and mailbox, but also turns a bunch of international locations into two-screen movie sets with literally a couple of puzzles each. And then you craft a makeshift space suit, travel to Mars, and find out you should have stolen a shop's sign back in Earth in order to enter an alien pyramid.

>> No.3450446

>>3450359
It does seem that the limitations of the C64 were becoming noticeable here, just like they were on the later Ultimas. Later LucasArts games designed around more powerful hardware got down the "giant epic" thing better.

>> No.3450450

>>3450359
I mean, I wouldn't go so far as to say that Sierra games from this time were the epitome of good design either.

>fall off pixelated ledge
>get killed by random baddie
>get lacerated and killed by a piece of sharp metal (this was in Space Quest III)

>> No.3450458

>>3450359
They didn't have enough disk space for a real "epic", but then company policy dictated they fit the game onto as few floppies as possible.

>> No.3450461

>>3450458
It does seem that they didn't utilize the available space as well as they could have. Zak is on two floppies, one of them the startup disk that loads the game engine and the disk that has all the level data. The startup disk is only half full on one side and has an empty back side, so they could have done something with that unused space.

I'd like a remake kinda like the Shadowgate remake where it adds a bunch of stuff and turns into basically a new game.

I don't have faith in anything hand drawn and free coming out this century, though.

This actually isn't the first game with this kind of interface however, right? I'm pretty sure there already videogames like that in Japan. The adventure part of The Goonies II was like that, and I've heard that Yuri Hojii had made a full adventure game with this kind of interface, Hokkaidō rensa satsujin Ohōtsuku ni kiyu, back in 1984.
