The Kenji Eno trilogy.

D - short, decent, non-linear FMV adventure.
Enemy Zero: his magnum opus.
D2 - weird Resident Evil clone, awesome bosses.

Martian Gothic is pretty good if you can get past the awkward controls and the cheesy voice acting

AITD/RE style:

Deep Fear. Easy difficulty but solid game. Technically speaking really good.

Countdown Vampires. It kind of drops the cake half way through the game though but overall it's solid. A bit unfairly difficult at times due to shitty enemy placement.

Overblood. Do not take this for a RE clone. Despite the similarities, even the story has a similar plot at some point, it was released shortly after RE, was developed at the same time. It is closer to AITD than RE, for instance with the possible melee combat. Good thing about this game is that you have 3 types of cameras: the typical AITD style pre-rendered ones (it was the first to do it in true 3D), a classic "behind the player back" third person camera, and a first person camera. You can switch between those at any times.

Martian Gothic COULD have been an amazing game if it weren't for this awful combat with awful hit detection and clunky controls. It's also really hardcore.

First person ones:
Zombi. The first real survival horror if you ask me, you probably know the remake on Wii-U and PC.
The Note. Delicious PS1 graphics, and delicious VA by the guy who voiced Chris in RE1.
Echo Night 2 (got fan translated recently), but play the first game first. Incredibly moody story oriented game.

If you're into stuff like Echo Night and Clocktower, I recommend ...Iru! but it's not easy getting into because it's Jap only.

Not really a lot of stuff out there from back then. Back when survival horror really hit its stride, everyone wanted to be Resident Evil. Other than that handful of games, no devs seemed terribly interested.

There's also this RE clone taking place on ship - Cold Fear. It's pretty ok, but the final boss is very disappointing.

>> No.3446859

>>3446857
Cold Fear isn't really survival horror. Saying it is a RE clone is not very fair too, it's a lot like RE4, except it was developed at the same time. They had the idea for the type of camera before RE4 showed it.

And btw if you're going to talk about PS2 games, that's when the genre picked in terms of number of releases, so there is a lot to talk about, but not on this board i'm afraid.

Hell Night as >>3445854 said is pretty good in its own way. Lots of exploration, a monster that chases you for the whole game, multiple endings (although I didn't know how to get them when I first played it, basically you can pick up new partners if you let your current partner die).
Galerians used to be pretty famous when it came out, but nowadays is almost completely forgotten. The sequel on PS2 wasn't bad either.
Vampire Hunter D on PS1 wasn't half bad either, IIRC. Can't remember if I played it in English or Japanese, however.

>Vampire Hunter D on PS1 wasn't half bad either, IIRC.

I absolutely ADORE this game.

It's not exactly survival horror though. It definitely has elements, and RE inspiration (especially the way the story / endings / NPC cutscenes system work) but it's more in the vein of Dino Crisis 2, Parasite Eve 2, Onimusha or even Devil may Cry.

Once you get into the mechanics (just make sure to turn off the auto lock!) it's tons of fun, with fantastic atmosphere and VA.

Seconding this. It's a very surreal journey through an abandoned maze-like bunker left over from WWII, now inhabitated by insane homeless people, all while being chased by a relentless monster. It has an incredibly strong atmosphere and tone. My favorite "scary" game. There isn't really anything else like it out there.

Yes if you're into this kind of things. It's kinda like a first person dungeon crawler in a way, but with survival horror themes, puzzles and combat.

Personaly I love the look of first person 3D PS1 games myself.

I got stuck at one point and had to use a walkthrough though, and I don't know how you're suppose to solve that "puzzle" alone really.

Man, I love Third Birthday, despite the genre shift (and I don't even particularly like cover-based third person shooters) it's a great game with a great plot. It's not easy to make a non-confusing time-travel one, and the ending is just wonderful. I seriously wonder where will they go from there. Parasite Eve is still my favorite, however. I wonder how much can the difficulty ramp up with consecutive NG+, NG++ was hard as fuck already.

I enjoyed T.R.A.G. on the Playstation. It has the same kind of tank controls and pre-rendered backgrounds that the early RE games have, but I don't know if you could qualify it as a survival horror series. It's more like Die Hard with a 90's anime flourish.
