PSX was fine. I'd say Xbox was more damaging to the industry tbqh.

Exactly what are your reasons for saying this? IMO, compared to Saturn or N64, PS was fine.

In terms of what? This is the system that began targeting non game players by lowering the bar and perpetuated an idea that a game is only as good as how it looks. If you appeal to the lowest common denominator of course you'll have a larger share in the market.

Maybe it did begin broadening the consumer horizons but it also housed a fucking shit ton of great all time games. The wii was the real first plebian console imo.

I don't see how games started catering to non-gaming players. I think games in general started to become more casual at the beginning of the 5th gen, excluding 2D games and a few others. The N64 looked better anyway, and in general there was always a war between which console had better graphics

It should be mandatory to be at least 27/29 years old to post here as to avoid this inane bullshit.
These memes of console catering to non-gamers and that graphics weren't important befor the 5th gen are really starting to become grating, but oh well, this is a bait thread after all.
Sage.

thread dead on arrival.

For the sake of discussion, developing on the PlayStation; a console that didn't have an overbearing publisher dictating what you could or could not do, was way cheaper. Lots of opportunities to experiment or make an attempt at a cash grab.

The N64 wasn't actually stronger graphically (let alone audially) than the PSone, it just was puched beyond it's limits by Nincucko.
NshitT4 software usually chugged at 20 frames per scanline while PSone games ran in an ideal 30fps.

>> No.3438742

Falling for /v/ bait here but fuck it. PSX was a high point for console games if anything. The tech increase allowed for games and game mechanics to be created that simply weren't possible before (yes, a gift or a curse). And unlike future gens, the dev teams were still very small and tight knit (think team SH) and the budgets weren't so astronomically high that they stifled outside the box games from getting past the pitch stage.

There is wayyyyyy more creativity and diversity in PSX's library than any console before it. Like, not even close. This is a system that had everything from Ape Escape to R-Type Delta to Wipeout 2097 to fucking Tail of the Sun and LSD. There isn't a single genre from the 8 or 16 bit systems that isn't well represented on it.

Only if your tastes in games is so insular that the only games you like are the generic anthropomorphic cartoon platformers that saturated the market in the 80's/early 90's would you say PSX sucked.

>> No.3438747

Only problem with Sony is they aren't strictly a games company like Nintendo or Sega. Sure, they have Team Japan releasing a game every now and then, but that's nothing compared to actual game companies.

How can a SYSTEM do this? Sony had almost no control over what Square, Konami, Namco madeā€”the publishers did what they wanted. If the market wanted 1337 graphix, they gave them 1337 graphix.

Of course Sony used graphics and processing power as the marketing points for their consoles. So what? Every company did this a generation before Sony, from Sega with blast processing, to Nintendo with Donkey Kong Country and Killer Instinct. It was just the continuation of the graphics wars. Before FFVII, there were FFVI and Chrono Trigger. Before Tekken 3, there was Killer Instinct.

Even then, Square and FF7 aside (which I think your words about graphics actually apply to), just look at the other most famous games on the console. Here's the list for your convenience: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_PlayStation_video_games . I'll try to give some examples why I don't agree with your position.

To start from the top, Metal Gear Solid and Tekken 3 looked great, sure; but they also played amazingly well and hold up even today. The same can be said about Resident Evil/Dino Crisis, Silent Hill, Tony Hawk's games and so on.

Also, your claim doesn't apply very well to many games from the list. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, while not a best seller, was literally the opposite of what you said. Same goes for PaRappa the Rapper, Oddworld, Dragon Quest VII, FF Tactics, Arc the Lad and plenty other best sellers, especially from Japan, where games like Devil Dice or Derby Stallion became huge hits.

So, of course graphics mattered; but most of the best-selling games had at least some value to them, gameplay-wise. They were pretty innovative for their time.

Sony did what Sega couldn't: slay the Nintendo giant. For that, they deserve some respect.

>> No.3438798

>Sony and Playstation are evil and killed videogames because they pushed CD roms which allows developers to use red book audio and FMV and those are evil! Also, Playstation 3 had a lot of cinematic hollywood games and that should retroactively impact on the brand 12 years earlier!

*meanwhile Nintendo validates silky smooth 007 fps, some games practically requires ram expansion, but even then it still runs at 0014 fps, cartridges and ram paks aren't cheap to produce or buy, yet some games still have loading times*

>> No.3438809

I'd say it was ps2 really desu, but thatwas enabled by PlayStation 1 i suppose.

Consoles had sent shovelware before psx, ofc, but not on the same scale.

It was wholly terrible and there were some good games on it, but yeah it was a step in the wrong direction.

Also, it pretty much put Sega out of business, which is not a good thing by anyone's standards. It also almost put Nintendo out too, which is a shame cos where would Sony and Microsoft steal their ideas then? Lol.

Also, PlayStations have the worst controller ever. Ever, ever.

>> No.3438881

I applaud Nintendo's innovative controller design but it really needed to spend more time on the drawing board.
The gamepad of a console whose main audience was children was too large for the willies of many boys.

The current sell out of gaming in general started with the PS1. I will even go further and say without the PS1 Arcades would have lasted much longer everywhere. SEGA would still be in the home consumer hardware market and micro$oft would never have entered with their shitty failbox. Also $ony was the company to pave the way for those crappy tripple A games that are nothing but hype and incompetence.

Well, the left analog is in the wrong position, and the shoulder pads aren't very good for having triggers compared to the Xbox. It also feels kind of cramped, like the sticks just got tacked on without redesigning the whole controller to handle them.

:^)

>Arcades would have lasted much longer everywhere.
Nah. Even if the PS1 didn't exist they would've continually lost traction due to the growing complexity of home console and computer hardware and them being able to handle such games 95% of the time as a result (as demonstrated by the Saturn and Dreamcast).

>SEGA would still be in the home consumer hardware market
They probably would've still bailed out due to the fuckups they did starting with the 32X along with the equally fucked up internal politics between the Japanese and US divisions.

>micro$oft would never have entered with their shitty failbox
I thought the Xbox was more of a chain reaction from the development of the Dreamcast than the PS2, though it's true the latter may have had a part as well..

>$ony was the company to pave the way for those crappy tripple A games that are nothing but hype and incompetence.
Sorry to rain on your parade but such games aren't a Sony-invented thing broski (Atari Pac-Man and ET anyone?).
