Retro

Wish it was retro
>SCPH-10010 (4x, All Black)
>BEMANI KoC (North American with wax paper mod)

Kind of want a NES-026, but unlike Genesis there are not enough games to justify replacing pads completely and Mega Man is not arcade stick friendly either way.

I have around over 100, for various systems, and adapters. I even have specialized controllers such as the ones for Virtua On for Saturn (2) and Dreamcast (1), the heavy force feedback Pelican lightguns that have the sliding barrel for SS/PS (2!) and step pad, DDR mats, Samba De Amigo maracas, The Move, keyboards, mice, and mice/keyboard adapters (Chronus Device) or analog (Hori TAC) for FPS, etc..

At the end of the day, I am most at peace with the default Sega Saturn control pad (official ones, not the knockoff cheap ones), but the only complaint I have with the controller was that I wish the XYZ buttons matched the size of the ABC buttons. I tried to switch over to joystick for fighting/shooting games, and I have ones with HAPP parts, Sanwa parts, and Seimitsu parts, but I still go running back to the Sega Saturn controllers. They work great for emulation (I use the YZBC buttons for the diamond shape format of SFC/SNES/PS games and C-buttons of N64 with XA being BA). I have plenty of imitator Sega Saturn pads like the ones Nubytech released on PS2 or the MadCatz for 360/PS3 (2!) and I still don't find those matching official Sega/SLS pads. There's something off to me for those imitation USB Sega Saturn pads that don't feel right to me either. Sadly, my old hands only accept official Sega/SLS controllers.

With all the controllers I have, along with the humble collection of games, (and multi-taps) I wish I had friends who would play games with me. So it is pretty sad I have so many, many controllers.

As for uncommon controllers that may be desirable, I have a couple Hori N64 mini controllers, 2 Daiei Hawks N64 controllers, the Championship Joystick for SNES (HAPP), a MAS Pro Stick for SS/PS/SNES with turbo fire, the NeoGeo PS1/2 pad, Hori EX 6-button 360 controllers (uhh, for emulation, to keep it /vr/) ... I dunno, there's a lot. I still am missing some that I desire like the SNES-shaped Hori pad for the Gamecube or Jusco N64 controllers.

Some people are fortunate to have others enjoy games around them, I'm just not as fortunate but I do have a lot of single player games to enjoy too.

>>3438030
The method in which I store my controllers is nowhere near as dramatic as a refrigerator. Basically they are all in those thick plastic storage cases you can get at Costco. The majority of controllers, after I clean them inside and out (Walmart 91% isopropyl, water/pine sol mix/ towels/q-tips and new cheap toothbrush), as you see in my pictures, I store them in Ziploc bags which then goes into boxes assigned per system with leftover silica packs from other stuff I buy. I basically just want to keep the controllers relatively dust/dirt/bug free until the next time I use them.

>>3438350
I would suggest against that, and only buy the controllers you will use instead of just collecting. Since I have all my controllers not because of any collecting reasons, but rather paranoia. See, I played fighting games heavily on GGPO, and I finally broke a Sega Saturn controller after years of intense use (GGPO, emulation, and Sega Saturn itself). My ability in the games is still average, but I did feel I reached another level, and there was a joy in that. Thus, the Sega Saturn controller suits me best due to familiarity and its own technical engineering/ergonomics. I realize there are a finite amount of Saturn controllers, so I got a few more just in case. Bought/tried cheaper alternatives and found they will not do. As most my personal experience has conditioned me to get stock controllers or Hori ones resembling other controllers. Unless you have the console and play games on them, don't just get controllers to get them.

As for the pic, it was originally intended to be all my 6-button Genesis/Mega Drive pads, which are close to the Saturn pad. Then when no one responded, I converted it to a Bomberman pic and threw in some clone Genesis controllers. Reposting pic because I got to go to work.

They're surprisingly hard to come by in my area though. I've found one pawn shop that tends to have them every so often for around $5 each, which is where I got these.

Yeah, I like those because they have an extra select button since Sega traditionally does not have select buttons. Those are good for my PS1/2 to 360 adapter (to play XBLA Guardian Heroes or Radiant Silvergun). Also great for my Total Control Plus (PS1/2 to Dreamcast) since I completely agree with >>3443370 on the design of the stock Dreamcast controllers (I also have a Total Control 3 adapter to convert regular Saturn controllers to Dreamcast, and Saturn Virtual On Twinsticks) .

>>3442716
I too have multiples of the same systems, probably due to my paranoia. Like having a lot of cats, each having a somewhat unique purpose when I initially got them. Reasons such as different regions, or just simply backup to another system in case one fails. I will admit I am somewhat ashamed of my 7 original dedicated systems (non-emulation, non-clone console) capable of playing Genesis/Megadrive games.

>>3436719
I too am envious of BOTH your Project Diva controllers.

>>3443370
Agreed, but I do see the uniqueness in having a screen on the controller. Like choosing your plays in American football in secret, or having your hand in poker/mahjong secret from other players. Shame, which is what I thought a Wii-U game pad was going to iterate on. Yet the bulk also had to accommodate a "rumble pack" N64 style, but I understand the reasoning why it wasn't built into the controller (patent trolls). still very strange to feed the cable out the bottom though. The Saturn 3D pad had some slightly better elements than the stock Dreamcast controllers.

The least bad cheap Sega Saturn-like USB pad I suppose is the Hyperkin GN6 pads. They are 95% close to resmbling a US Genesis 6-button controller, and available in DB9 (for use with the 2600 and/or Genesis/Mega Drive) and in USB flavours for purchase at amazon for $13USD before shipping. They lack the textured plastic for the d-pad, skimp on as much rubber as possible in the membranes (so a very subtle "spring"/"squish" difference from the real thing, and may not well replace worn out rubber membranes of an actual Gen/MD 6-button pad) to save on costs, and the weight is slightly less with a reduction of chips/components in modernization. Still 95% is damn good, a 6-button Genesis controller is the precursor to a Saturn pad, but lacking in a L & R button, plus only $13USD, it still stands as the only Hyperkin product I can recommend.

I think Madcatz got their poor reputation from their failure to capitalize on the need for good Dreamcast controllers. Everyone back then were clamoring for a worthwhile controller, Madcatz and Performance made ugly awful controllers no one wanted to use, and only Ascii stepped up to the plate with the Fighting Pad FT line.

I never understood how Japanese dual joysticks always seem to have 2P's buttons laid out as if they were sitting at the end of a bench just getting a corner view of the screen, while P1 gets a nice comfortable layout.

I will never be happy with any stock made joystick, because I prefer Seimitsu LS-32 stick, Sanwa OBSF buttons, Sega Astro City button layout (the curve for the heavy attacks Z/C seems more natural to me), and a wider distance between stick and buttons like modern Hori sticks.

after ps3 got stolen, i brought the ps2 out of retirement, had given away both controllers. started looking around secondhand shops, could only find off brand controllers. collection grew as I looked for a better and better controller, until finally found the right one for me.

-Thrustmaster, forgot I owned this one. Wonder if it works with Ace Combat 4 & 5?
-Never could get those logitech wireless controllers to work
-Madcatz piece of crap always tilted to the left. Got the Burning Bow with that controller during a powerleveling run in FFXII
-black Gamestop brand is one of those rare controllers where the analog sticks are wired to the d-pad and face buttons. Playing games like FFVII or Megaman Legends with it gives faux-analog support, really improves controllability
-purple Gamestop slightly better built, beat FFX using that controller
-PS dual analog and PS1 controller. Sadly learned that neither work with PS2, not even for PS1 games.
-buncha gnarly chewed up nasty child-owned sony brand controllers. i should throw them away

Well, to be fair, those Panther XL sticks tended to break a lot. A lot. Mine seemed to last rather well, but I've heard of people going through stick after stick. The trigger and the springs in particular would give out - madcatz was sending out replacements for those, at least the trigger, though some people were eagerly stashing broken ones for parts. They didn't require any particular registration type info to send it, I didn't get any hassles of that sort or another when I got my replacement trigger.

I could probably arrange that, but it would be complicated! I'd have to get 3 more raspeberry pis, and/or three more dos machines, and 3 more small monitors/TVs.

Or a 21:9 monitor to play a few dual screen mame games. And for split screen games, across 2 systems, together with a pivoted plain old 16:9.

And then I'd have to go out and round out a full set of people interested in this kind of stuff, maybe 6, considering not all could be expected to make it regularly. I might even need an extra system in case more than 4 showed up at once.

To make them run on a network, just like with the dos machines. not raspberry pis neccessarily, in fact, I wouldn't really want to get a much newer one, it would make the thing proclaim "unfair".

I got one of those, but I'm far too unwilling to use it and wear it out, I really need to find more dos controllers so that I won't be bothered by this, cause right now I've been using mediocre gravis gamepads.

Any good USB controllers, aside form the iBuffalo ones for Famicom and Super Famicom? As I get more into emulation it seems there is a lack of good quality controllers for less popular platforms. Haven't heard of any good N64 one either.

If you consider that good then yes, there's an assload of cheap chink shit right up your alley. But you really do best with original controllers an adapters. Unless you also fell for the adapter lag maymay?

There is something fun with all the clear colors.

I use the adapter pictured, but I do not know about how much lag it introduces. It works fine when I use Project64, and I'm not that picky with N64.

I recently saw a N64 controller on eBay which I have not seen before. A complete in box Toys 'R Us "Jeoffrey" controller which has a sticker of the giraffe in the center, so I bid more than any sane person would at around $15USD (plus the $15 shipping from Japan) for $30 ... and I didn't win. In fact holy shit the price it went for, I can't believe people are so rich, either that or there are some people just pushing the price up then telling the seller "oops, I typed a bid in wrong" making them relist it.
