First of all, the hair. Every loop is like a L'Oreal ad.

At first the pic appears amazing, but take another look. Most of it is done using just cutout animation. The actually fully animated parts are the explosions, the sand, crab's back, and very few others.

That said, the art direction and the level of detail of the graphics in Metal Slug is admittedly great and I wish more games would do something similar.

It is, but she's still drawn very carefully and it's showing.

Except for her head. Yeah. But it's kinda justifiable since at low resolutions that's the hardest part to draw. Some other sprites like Sean and Gill also have static heads—with some hair animations.

Even aside from SFIII, not many 2D fighting game characters move their heads much in neutral poses.

You see, I think Capcom has forever been trying to make Chun Li what she was not initially: the sexy mascot of the series. When initially, I think she was more of a "cute Chinese kung-fu girl" with just a little bit of sexy legs.

Now, Mai is obviously a fan service character—not in a bad way. No one hides it—and she's stayed pretty consistent over years.

But to me it seems that Capcom has been trying to retrospectively change Chun Li to some monstrous milf. Initially, I think she was closer to Pai Chan/Ling Xiaoyu. But then Capcom took away all her Asian facial features, gave her new ridiculous legs, and generally tried to give her more and more sex appeal. All of this IMO just doesn't work: she still has her modest original outfit, but Capcom goes out of its way to try and find new ways to make her sexier.

And in SFV, her boobs and overall looks are just ridiculous. I'm just saying—leave Chun Li alone already! For fuck's sake—SF has other female characters! For sex appeal, pick Mika, or Sakura, or at least Cammy if you pretend SFII is the only SF game. Heck, I love Mika much more than any other SF girls.

It's a really good design, on par with Mario for giving the most detail as you could in a famicom game. It's packing a huge amount of detail into a tiny sprite. Matsushima's two sprite trick allows for more colors than normal.

That's really it… except for the bouncing animation in her SFV portrait. This is just a bit too ridiculous and cheesy. Hence the comparison with Soul Calibur (her boobs look exactly like Taki's now). However, in SFV she's a little more like her old self—compared to IV.

I liked how in SFIII, she actually got very nice king-fu movements, stances and so on. Her stage also had a very distinct Chinese vibe. This made her deeper as a character, in my opinion. I slightly disliked her taunt though, she became slightly arrogant/bitchy.

On a side note, I loved how both TvC and MvC3 looked. I guess they tried to follow Shinkiro artwork style, and in the case of MvC they also added the trademark Marvel shading. The result was simply eye candy, it was exactly the look I hoped for when Capcom were taking their series to 3D. Too bad they made SFIV look disgusting.

I mostly played Turbo on SNES. If you can can see anything during Spinning Bird kick, you have some very good eyesight. No, really. The animation is very fast, and the SNES sprite is scaled as fuck. Interesting thing I found: the rotation animation is actually flawed. Because some frames are just mirrored versions of others, Chun Li "swaps" legs during the animation. You can notice she also "moves" her arms because of this.

Heh, it's funny: I'd say it's fantastically drawn… but the animation itself is actually not so great.

Here's a slowed down version. Now, look carefully at Chun Li's legs when she faces the viewer or exactly when she turns back. Watch carefully… You can notice she swaps her legs: one frame she rotates with her left leg forwards, the next frame it's her right leg.

Of course, since the animation was so fast, it wasn't really noticeable… But still it's kinda cheap. Instead of 8 different frames, they drew only 5. Maybe they had hardware limitations or time constraints, but still a flaw is a flaw.

There's not much brilliant about it. Yes, it's a common technique to lower the number of frames. It's not hard to do. Same reason as for OP's picture.

It was obvious few people would notice that. But in the end when you watch closely, you realize it's always been there. I don't blame Capcom, it's just obvious the hardware had limitations.

The SFIII version is gorgeously animated though—but I like Chun Li less in it. She has no ass and no hems
