How good is the PSP for playing emulators? Thinking about playing snes, genesis, n64, ps1, maybe some nes.

>> No.3424206

>>3424174
PS1 is fine, Genesis isn't far behind. N64
is a bit slow and isn't great.

SNES stands out as being complete garbage on the PSP. Even beginner games like SMW suffer from broken sound and graphics.

>>3424174
Good, not great. An excellent value though. Add the other anon said, if you're discerning you'll probably not play much n64 and even if you're not a lot of titles straight up won't run.

>>3424174
The best thing you can get out of it is perfect, portable PSX emulation. Beyond that? You're better off trying anything else.

>> No.3424241

>>3424228
That's not true. Most emulators up to gen 4 run +99% perfect the SNES issue is a software anomaly that just never got fixed and it's still ~96% accurate. For how old and cheap the device is it's durable, ergonomic and has a large bright screen.

Been like six years since I ran Picodrive on my PSP but I remembered it having tons of graphical/sound issues and if you switched to the more accurate mode it caused slowdown for a lot of games. Granted most of these issues were minor things like the shield around Sonic in Sonic 2 not looking proper.

>> No.3424260

>>3424174
I have the same one (bright) perma patched it with infinity and its nice. set the cpu to 333 to help with slowdown. battery life suffers though

It's a fairly good emulation device. Don't count on playing any N64 games on it, though.

>Thinking about playing snes,
It's not perfect but I think the hate is exaggerated. Lots of games run fine but have minor graphical issues and occasional slowdown. Mostly I use it for RPGs, but I recent played SM and it was solid overall.
>genesis,
Pretty good, generally better than SNES. Sound is the most obvious shortfall.
>n64,
Don't bother.
>ps1,
Probably the best feature of the whole thing. It's not perfect, but it is very very good.
>maybe some nes.
Basically as good as anything else out there.

>> No.3424310

Perfect for Ps1 thanks to Sony official emulator, good for GB/C, NES and Genesis, serviceable for GBA (you can run every game WITH HEAVY FRAMESKIPPING), very very bad for SNES and N64. You should buy a New 3DS or an Android handheld, PSP was good for its time but not anymore

96% accurate my ass, most game just don't even start (and I'm not talking about some obscure shit, Megaman X and Castlevania IV just don't work/are very slow), others have graphical problem (Super Metroid misses a lot of effects) and so on. If you want portable SNES buy a New 3DS

Don't EBoots run off hardware?

>> No.3424425

As far as I know. But there's still discrepancies between the original console and PSP that lead to compatibility issues/bugs with certain games.

>>3424314
Not who you're replying to, but I have not had the same experiences you're describing.
>96% accurate my ass, most game just don't even start
Almost every game I've tried has at least started, though that doesn't mean they all ran well.
>(and I'm not talking about some obscure shit, Megaman X and Castlevania IV just don't work/are very slow),
Both of those games run fine for me (and most people, based on compatibility lists), with minor graphical issues. There are much better examples of SNES games that are totally unplayable on PSP.
>others have graphical problem (Super Metroid misses a lot of effects) and so on.
"A lot" is an exaggeration. There are definitely issues, but compared to the original hardware and other emulators, it actually runs pretty great.
>If you want portable SNES buy a New 3DS
It's certainly better, but also a lot more expensive. I think it's silly to outright dismiss the PSP based on your overblown claims.

>>3424241
The SNES issue is that the software development was discontinued pretty early, so they didn't have time to iron out bugs and improve performance. The GBA emulator is miles ahead of the SNES one, and the GBA requires more power to emulate than the SNES.

>N64 is a bit slow and isn't great

That's an understatement. N64 emulation is garbage on PSP. Smash Bros only plays if you turn off sound for example, and even then it doesn't play well.

Genesis emulation is pretty good, SNES emulation as well but it depends on the game (for example Super Metroid has some graphical glitches), PS1 is pretty much perfect, NES, GB and GBC also works pretty much perfectly (Shantae is the only GBC game I've had problems with). GBA emulation is great not perfect and depends on the game.

PSP also has a lot of great remakes/ports, so keep that in mind if you want to play eg Persona 2.

It's great for PS1 stuff. Something like 99% compatibility.

If you get the PSP Go you can get a sweet dock setup to output 240p component and play with a DS3. Both sets of shoulder buttons and sticks work when using the DS3, so Ape Escape and MGS play great.

Every other system has serious flaws. I play a bit of NES on it and that's it.

whoa. any downsides to this other than no multiplayer? probably a few frames of input lag? i have an xrgb, no psx hardware anymore and hate epsxe/psx/mednafen/xebra/whatever

Genesis plays great and it supports Sega CD as well, nes, GBA, GBC work flawlessly. N64 is only good for Super Mario 64 and even with the improvements they made (they run it at 32 bits so it runs faster) it's still far from perfect.

Snes is not complete garbage as some people mention here (they live under a rock and are probably using the first snes emu), most of games run fine and those who have problems you need to either tweak some stuff here and there or simply download another snes emulator:

- "Snes9xTYL" is the one most people use but it's outdated (2007)

- Snes9X Euphoria is based around the previous one improving some stuffs (2011)

- "Snes9xTYL mecm" is the one I use and the most recent updated one (2015) this runs every game I've tested fine.

>> No.3424809

>>3424798
Forgot to mention "Snes9xTYL mecm" includes games that have specialized graphic chips, which is one of the reasons why it's the best emu of the three compatibility wise.

The advantages are:

- Cheap, like really fucking cheap, less than $50/€50 is the norm
- Buttons, DPAD and screen are excellent if you find it in decent condition
- Can actually emulate most PSX titles perfectly, L2 and R2 remapped to analog though
- Megadrive and SEGA CD emulation, Popful Mail and Snatcher work great last time I played them
- GBA Emulation is 99% good
- Nes and GB/GBC are fine

Cons

- It's not as good as lot of stuff released in more recent times
- SNES emulation is dodgy, as others said there problems even in the most widely supported games like Super Mario World or Super Metroid, personally I have had problems in Megaman X and Castlevania IV too
- No N64 emulation, the one that exists is shit but what can you do with no documentation and shitty hardware to begin with?
- Original titles are hit and miss, some very good remakes like Castlevania Dracula X and Ultimate Ghosts and Goblin, some other good games but they're not retro so I won't mention them

His line of thought is probably that you can build a handheld out of a raspberry pi, which is still a retarded advice to a guy that made a thread on /vr/ to ask about psp emulation instead of using google.

>> No.3424840

>SNES
very game dependent. most don't work well. requires a lot of tweaking.
>Genesis
Very good. Haven't played a single game that hasn't worked yet.
>N64
Bad. Proof of concept. Can play Mario 64 and some other games well, check compatiblity list.
>PS1
Perfect. Official emulator runs almost anything perfectly.
>NES
Very good. Some games have graphical glitches (Scandinavian Mr. Gimmick has glitched status bar, Japanese doesn't though, Punch-Out has glitched "nigga stole my bike" scene).

It's ok, I've had mine forever but nowadays you should get a Vita or New 3DS.

It does sega CD and pc engine very well, pc engine CD, it's not perfect but it works, wonderswan, game gear and lynx work fine.

Saturn doesn't work, I'm still attempting to make mednafen work to try PC-FX emulation.

Never tried dosbox.
