I'm currently marathoning the BoF series in order, from I to IV, i'm still in I and just got Nina back into my party after she fell in Tunlan and lost her memory.
I think i'm close to the end, i mean, there aren't many places i haven't already been to and now that she can fly i can finally reach Scande and fight Zog.

So far i've loved the game, almost as much as i loved Chrono Trigger, but there are 4 things in it that were let-downs and could have been done a lot better:
1_ The fixed magic damage, that was a terrible idea. It makes the variety of magic spells and dragon forms worthless since there is no point in using any but the strongest damaging and acorns are cheap anyway.

2_The random battle encounter rate is too high in some dungeons. This is annoying and makes fighting a chore, sometimes you just want to clean a floor and move on with the story but you have to battle every 4 steps.

3_The game doesn't tell you what the "relics" (the items that go into the ETC slot) do, with the exception of status raising items like the Ring and Clog, you have to search guides to know what other relics do, and apparently there is one relic (MistyRG) that does NOTHING.

4_The statuses are really convoluted, not explained at all, and some are even pointless, like MAG, INT and WIS, since magic damage is fixed as i said before. After the first few hours i realized the only status that really matter are Attack, Defense and Act, the rest are completely worthless and pointless.
And let's not forget Debo, by the point you get this transformation for Karn you won't even fight on water again anymore, another useless thing.

I hope these issues have been fixed in the following games of the series. And i think i'm in love with Bleu.

The MistyRG is probably an item that can be used in battle to produce a spell effect like the QuakeKey

Breath of Fire is an old game that's mostly more about the aesthetic of the adventure than it is about the mechanics or anything, style over substance, but the style is quite good. Nice Graphics, Nice Music. Weird and occasionally disturbing subject matter.


The main thing I'd caution you on with the series is that it gets progressively more and more disturbing and heart breakingly depressing with each installment, like a person with PTSD descending into depression and becoming obsessed with tragic poetry or body horror.

BoFIV is probably the most extreme example of body horror I've ever encountered in a game, but I won't spoil it.

BoFV is probably my favorite in the series because it takes all of that and reverses the feeling like a person breaking out of depression, so I'd definitely recommend you play that too.

Mechanically, the games improve linearly from I-V, BoFII is still somewhat similar, but 3 is improved greatly, and 4 improves greatly upon that, and V is simply greatly superior to most RPGs in general from a mechanical standpoint.

I have to say that i actually like the dark and sometimes depressing atmosphere of the game, at least until now, the story has a very mature vibe to it.

I wish I could play BoF for the first time again. That game was so nice.
For several reasons the first game is my favourite in the series along Dragon Quarter, and the music is among my all-time favourites.
If you don't mind remakes, the GBA version has some neat portraits and fixes some things (such as the ridiculous encounter rate) but the music became worse.

Good luck trying to get the Boombada in II.
It's been almost 15 years and I never got it right.

I was a dumbass and saved after I'd already used the ingredients. The only problem I have with the ingredients is getting the vinegar. I got it the first 2 times first try, but after that I just couldn't do it. Being doped up on pills at the time probably didn't help, had a real bad tooth infection at that time in one of my wisdom teeth, fuck it was brutal. BoF is a bit dated in its gameplay and has plain confusing decisions regarding its mechanics (fixed magic damage) but it's a pretty solid, enjoyable game with great music. Make sure to fish in those strange wells.

BoF2 is my favorite in the series, but make sure you're playing the retranslation. I can't stress that enough, The guy tries a bit hard to be Woolsey but it's generally really good the plot is still a bit generic but the characters are lovely.

I thought BoFIII was slow and a bit meh in most places but still an otherwise good game. It seems to be most people's favorites because of the dragon system.

BoFIV is behind 2 for my favorite in the series. The aesthetic and music here is unlike most JRPGs I've played (and I wish V and VI was just an evolution of it but alas, Capcom). If you know every secret about any game, no game requires you to grind much or grind at all, and the point of gameplay is to learn those secrets. You spout this "grinding" that and "grinding" this, but you are ignorant enough to look at my webms where I beat bosses and hard encounters with low level characters using TACTIC. Developers didn't put easy level-up island up there for nothing. Rand and Bow/Bosch at level 35 (level you normally get) get spells that help party a lot and both are healers based on their basic spells - class every RPG player should invest into, it your loss if you didn't. Bleu/Deis besides broken elemental spells gets hardcore supportive spells like Might which casted on shaman Katt/Lin will do 999 each hit. Sten in his shaman form is faster than most the enemies and can turn a 4-man encounter into 1-man. Use a fucking T-A-C-T-I-C and experiment with things.

tl; Most games may seem to be hard and thus grind-heavy at first, but when you learn it is not so anymore. Dark Souls's early Black Knight Halberd and Rite of Kindling breaks the game as much as stuff from BoF2 do (Early chainmails (just before Argus), Bolt Tonfa and Rainbow Robe).

There is an easy way to re-apply fusions if you are in the FINAL FUCKING DUNGEON. Read >>3432782. Consider that both Nina and Bleu/Deis has Exit spell. Save in Infinity (FINAL FUCKING DUNGEON) in the dungeon city (I guess it is where you currently are), go outside the city and use Exit. Warp to your town and apply fusions to characters of your choice (Katt/Lin). Swap them for other characters (because they will lose the fusions otherwise), buy whatever you need and go die in a battle. 4 kings were ironically the easiest of the end game bosses to beat. You can totally force their patterns to the point that all you need to do is run straight up to them and roll through their slashes while hacking away. I thought so, but I always played this game with no guide, only by trial and error, and it's got a fuckton of missable stuff.
For example I know most of the citizens (mp guy for Katt and dojo guy teaching missile to two of my characters were OP), I had to test out which carpenter is better (cooking hands down, thankfully I liked his out the most), missed almost all shamans and I don't know where they are to this day, got chopchop by dumb luck the first time and had to savescum to get it the next times (it was immensely useful the first time around and I absolutely wanted it), missed the intermediate dragon transformations the first two times it's kinda stupid how, in such a long game, they give you these immediately after the puppy ones, I killed dad and got the bad end the first time, whoops, I always missed the LifeBR, and while I found her hideout, I completely missed Deis in all my playthrough, and I honestly thought that was just an easter egg from the first game. I only recently discovered that she's an actual playable character.
