Worse graphics are actually much more immersive.
From the get-go, you're already in "imagination mode", kind of like when you're reading a book.
Things on the screen are stand ins for what you know they're supposed to be, and your imagination does the rest.

With today's photorealistic graphics, any time something fantastic appears it actually takes you out of it because of the realism clashing with how you 'know' such a thing can't really exist.

I forgot that one commercial for the NES multicart that boasted "3D graphics" and "Graphics so real, they're scary!" with the game characters turning into shitty CG jumping out of the television and surprising children. I remember it was one of those carts with a ton of bootlegs by AVS and Color Dreams or something.

Another thing was people eventually hating silly ads that had next to nothing to do with what they were advertising, and the whole stigma against them being "Too silly" and "Shit". Now all game ads have to be generic and not too far off from movie ads/posters, where it's essentially just the box art with company logos, and platform logos slapped on. Now nothing ever seems to really reach out and grabs peoples' attention, it's just "I like this series, I'll buy the new installment"

Anyway, I still find all of the ads ITT funny as all hell. They're definitely more inventive than the current trend of cover art+release date samefaggotry. Ads used to be fun and exciting, now they're just another link in the chain of the marketing blitz.

Late to the funeral but goddamn.... That really makes me sad.

One of the first egm2/expert gamer magazines I read was the SotN one, that had a shitload of awesome game reviews for the playstation in there too (ff7 I think, treasures of the deep, megaman x4). From that issue I was inspired to subscribe to them for several years until they did Game now magazine which was a piece of shit compared to their earlier years but I digress..

He seemed like a cool dude and we had similar tastes in vidya even now. I don't think I would have been near as good as a reader now if I didn't have my monthly issues of videogame magazine reading material. Their pieces on Japanese videogames, the steps on how to make an article, etc was just really neat and introspective on it all, made it seem like I was right at the table listening to Andy and his friends talk about vidya.

I know I'm probably looking at it with rose tinted glasses but I'm really saddened to hear it. There were a lot of neat editors I looked up to then that I wonder about sometimes, with magazines declining in popularity as the internet became a bigger thing

What I liked about the old EGM/2/expert gamer mags was the writers were gamers first and writers second. They either held records in gaming, or really knew their shit.

I listened to a podcast many years ago with some old EGM editors and they talked about having to pass a gaming test to be hired.

Nowadays its just some scrub with a degree in creative writing who sees easy money in games journalism.

But anyway, I really like old school game magazine editors. From EGM and its sub mags to OPM and PSM to Game Players. They never really steered me wrong back in my early days of gaming.

Some authors can write description well and others can't. I love the way Steinbeck can write an entire book that's 95% just describing a street and make it fascinating.
