3419016 No.3419016 [Reply] [Original]

Does anyone else feel that DKC 2 isn't as good as 1? The platforming feels more timid with level design, and the game feels too forgiving with spacious enemy placement. Getting the coins feels unsatisfying as they're simple to get and don't require skill, mostly fast paced movement. Don't get me wrong DKC 2 is still a well made game, but it doesn't seem as challenging and rewarding as DKC

On the contrary, I feel like DKC2 improved on the original in every way.

>Better levels
>Better soundtrack
>Diddy/Dixie is better than DK/Diddy
>Better animal buddies
>Better collectables
>Secret world/boss
>Better bosses

DKC 2 has better music, atmosphere and everything really.

Its the best case scenario for a sequel, people.

>The platforming feels more timid with level design
Huh? It's the exact opposite. DKC1 levels are a bit flat and don't have much variety. DKC2 tries a lot more and adds verticality to the levels and their design is overall more creative. It's specially fun how they are better adapted for the animal buddies while in the first game the animal buddies are basically just a power-up. Nothing wrong with having Yoshi-like power ups indeed, but it's nothing really unique either.

>the game feels too forgiving with spacious enemy placement
Funny because the second game is generally considered the most unforgiving of them all. You know, bloating the screen with enemies would just be cheap challenge as opposed to strategical positioning. Also the enemies in DKC2 have a noticeably better AI (e.g. when they make moves according to your position or have more complex patterns, etc).

>Getting the coins feels unsatisfying as they're simple to get and don't require skill, mostly fast paced movement
You mean the bonus coins? That's nonsense. The bonuses themselves require a lot more skills than in the first game where most of them consist of basic roulette challenge (which also shows how they don't have much variety either). I do actually like the bonuses in DKC1, but there's only so much you can take before it gets boring.

>Don't get me wrong DKC 2 is still a well made game, but it doesn't seem as challenging and rewarding as DKC
I agree that DKC2 is a fantastic platformer but the rest is simply untrue. DKC2 is harder and rewarded you with bonus coins, better animal buddies, extra levels, more satisfying challenge, true ending, etc. In DKC1 you get... um, I don't really know. Still DKC1 is a very good game, specially in an artistic way (graphics, soundtrack, presentation), but it just isn't very unique. Or at least not like the second game.

Only thing wrong with DKC 2 is no playable DK and even then it's still the best out of the three.

DKC2 was a more atmospheric game, it had the best soundtrack in the series, and it introduced collectibles that were used to unlock secrets.

I found that 1 had the better soundtrack. I'm probably the oddball one here, but my favorite stage in DKC1 was Snow Barrel blast simply for it's atmospheric tone it took with the music, and how the mountain disappears in the background when the snowfall gets heavier. As for the hidden stages, 1 was pretty bland and only rewarded you with lives, which isn't the best way to do hidden content, so DKC2 was a step up in that department since it gave you extra levels as opposed to a Ramby or Enguarde stage.

Does anyone know why they decided to not include Donkey Kong in DKC3? I never understood why Rare had such a hard on for keeping the main character out of his own series.

I think each Monkey Kong Country has a different feel and style. While always trying to point out which one I like most I really can't. I kind of see all 3 as one big game.

Probably just as an excuse to try new gameplay mechanics. Obviously they could have brought DK back but I suppose they thought bouncing on water and the too heavy to throw stuff worked better with a big dumb baby.

DKC1 is the worst of the trilogy and is only beloved for nostalgia and for the fact that it spawned two excellent games (which I am thankful for)

>> No.3421841

>>3420968
Eh, DKC1 has a very good soundtrack too, so it's understandable.

There's a rumor out there that DK was supposed to be in the third installment, but they decided to use a more puerile character instead because they thought it would be better fit for the colorful and lighthearted scenario of that game. It sounds more like a rationalization to me, but it makes sense. DK is too "serious" for that game.

I agree. The DKC2 level design is awesome also the variety of areas.
Only thing i like more on DKC1 is the atmosphere when you start the game and the sun goes down. Or the Snow levels.
DKC2 soundtrack is one of the best of all time imo.

At first I agreed, but then 2 just grew on me. It made better use of the buddy system, having two characters with different abilities. For example. What's more, there were barrels which could only be used by certain characters, and they could throw one another to reach higher barrels. In comparison, DKC1 had a really lacklustre buddy system. Other than a few bigger enemies only DK could kill, it was basically just an alternative health system. And as everyone else mentioned, the bonuses, extra levels, music, atmosphere was better, and it felt more rewarding to 100%.
DKC3 was my least favourite. It was fun, but the environments didn't appeal to me whatsoever, and that fucking baby shit needed a punch in the face
