Previous thread >>3393957
This thread is for the spirited discussion of CRT displays - Televisions, monitors and projectors used for the playing of retro games!

>Try to keep it /vr/-related: Nothing past 5th gen(+Dreamcast). Slight OT might be okay if related to CRTs (E.G. 16:9 compatible models, flatscreens, etc.) Systems with backwards compatibility are also pretty safe territory, assuming you're focusing on the older games. PC CRTs are also a-ok.
>Produce OC! Get out your real cameras and take beautiful pictures of your CRTs displaying recognizable characters with the kind of beautiful accuracy that brings tears to the eyes of young and old alike! If you take 100 photos, at least one of them will turn out alright! (maybe)
>Try to be as detailed as possible when asking info on a specific model. As always, google is your friend, and we are your friends with benefits. Older archived threads aren't a bad place to look either.
>Share appreciation for others choice of technology and personal philosophy of gaming. As always show courtesy in your discussion and moderate yourselves first.

Discussion of video processing and scaling devices is okay, but try to keep the focus on CRTs and CRT accessories

Remember never to fall for the scart meme.

So, lets say I want to make direct console - BNC cables for use with Extron switch and PVM.
Not really because of "memes" but because 10 female SCART - BNC connectors are going to look silly.

Using Megadrive 1 as example, I need 8-pin DIN, BNC connectors and crimping tools. And 75 Ohm mini coax cable with 4 individually shielded wires (R, G, B, S).
Console - SCART cable has 75 Ohm resistors and 220 uF capacitors on these lines. Resistors are not required for 75 Ohm coaxial cables, but what about capacitors?
Guess I can add small box with components required (not really different from SCART shell), I can drill holes for each signal (somewhat messy).
Cutting traces from PCB to AV port and soldering required components in between will ruin compatibility with consumer TVs with SCART inputs.

>> No.3416904

Just ignore those posters. They parrot "don't fall for the SCART meme" without knowing why they're saying it or are uninterested in listening to why people would choose SCART cables and instead are just trying agitate or make themselves feel superior about their choice to use non-SCART connections.

Hey everyone. Kinda new here, but I picked up a PVM-2030 A while back and finally got around to getting the 25 pin dsub-SCART adapter and some cables for my PSX and SNES. What I noticed is that both the screen position and the convergence needs to be slightly adjusted, but I have no idea where to even begin. The PDF's I find on google don't mention any kind of pots or switches for that stuff.

>> No.3416925

convergence is done on the rings (and is a total pain to do) and/or with magnets.

>> No.3416931

>>3416902
On second thought, I can cut traces and add 220 uF capacitors. And use console - BNC cables with Extron and SCART cables with capacitors removed from the SCART male shell on my consumer CRT.

But that's not just "lol make your cables", that also involves extensive console modding. Anyone can build SCART - BNC adapter. This is much harder.

>>3416913
Isn't gscartsw the only decent (quality) switch with 8 inputs and everything else is kind of bad? And it lacks manual switching and only has one output. And always sold out.
Extron units are like 150 USD to ship to my country, but have lots of inputs and outputs, and I can use free ports as audio setup switch.

Got an issue with a commodore 1701 monitor where every now and then the picture will start flickering and wavering. It'll usually go away after a few minutes but it's annoying, that's for sure. That is an awfully high asking price especially since he ain't delivering or moving.

Being a Cincinnati man myself why don't you check out some of the thrift shops. I just picked up my first trinitron, and a reeeeeeally good looking toshiba 14" for my desk the other day for $5 a piece at the salvation army in Eastgate. I know it's not retro but I picked up a working fat PS2 with no cords for 3 bucks and ordered the rest of what I needed to hard drive it (already have spare power and AV)> Thrifting ain't as good around here as it used to be but there are still some great finds and enough old people for decent yard sales on the weekends.

Found my SNES with a couple of games in a generic cardboard box at a yardsale labeled "old plug and play games" at a yard sale. Elderly couple wanted $15 for the box.

The only place I would avoid is the Goodwill on 125 (there is never anything there....EVER).

I would actually consider it if they were all the same model or at least the same size and knew I could get more, but it's unlikely. With the BVM's/L5 I'm keeping, I'll at least be able to do a 4-display 2x2 grid if I want, which is pretty cool.

Connections/classifieds/making calls etc. It actually took me about 2-3 years of regular searching to find a good condition, high end PVM/BVM, and it was probably entirely by luck I found an ad buried that everyone else missed. I think the guy left out or typo'd the model name on the ad but I recognized the photo and called him up. It came from a post-production studio type thing. When I went there to pick it up he ended up finding 2 more monitors which just happened to be BVM-20F1Us. I asked him to let me know if he finds any more or other gear they are getting rid of and I took his card.

A few weeks later he texted me saying that their location also owns another studio and they were clearing out some CRTs, which is where this second lot came from (the ones I originally got are the rightmost ones in the corner). I honestly didn't really need or want more, but I figure they are pretty rare to find here in Canada and I know people who would want them so I just decided to take the entire lot. He also had a bunch of stuff like cables, computers, audio gear, switchers etc which I needed too so I figured it was worth it.

They are "untested" in that I've hooked up nothing to them yet, and they have likely not been in use for a number of years. They all power on. The company I got them from pretty much went full digital YEARS ago which is why they aren't used, but they were in good working order before they were stored. Most were stored indoors/climate controlled too, except some of the older models which I didn't take or weren't interested in.

I'm pretty confident everything will be fine though, and the guy also offered me money back if there were any problems. I got my first set of BVMs (the ones on the right in the photo) a month or so ago from them and they were pretty much in perfect condition. These guys have done professional post-production work for some familar movies/tv shows, and everything was calibrated and serviced pretty regularly. I think half of the BVMs actually had a Sony factory tube replacement and service which is technically supposed to occur at 30k hours, but is rarely done by most owners. Another one of the BVMs was literally a paperweight for them and only used as an SDI passthrough box for audio cue recording for years, and the tube was never on.

>nothing else besides this and the LaCies matter imo senpai
The LaCies are really great, I just finished trying Overwatch on it along with some Quake 3, 3rd Strike (on fightcade), and some other games and it was very nice. I almost forgot what black looked like on a computer monitor.

I also tried my new scaler/line doubler on it (the OSSC) and it looked great. I'm really interested in trying large horizontal resolutions on it for emulation, i'm sure it will look awesome. If someone wants one monitor to do everything the best choices I think are either a LaCie (or something like a Sony FW-900/500) + line doubler or a Multiformat PVM/BVM.

I'm getting 2 more of them...I only took the one today because that's all the van I had could fit. I wanted to focus on the newer PVMs since they were promised to people and what 99% of people want or need when it comes to retro displays, so I know I wouldn't be stuck with them. The LaCie displays don't seem to be in much demand, and I've seen a few on classifieds for months now. The PVMs get snatched up in hours, sometimes minutes. I'm definitely considering keeping one LaCie, although it would kind of be out of place in my setup.

PVMs and "PVMs"(JVC, Ikegami, etc) come in dot triad and aperture grille flavors.

>>3418221
Picture quality is on of the things that HDCRTs don't lose from the added scaler.
You'll obviously need to calibrate it and hope it doesn't have high hours, but an HDCRT can still make for a nice sub-1080p movie machine.

They just started shipping them out in the last 2-3 weeks or so I think. I was on a waiting list since last year. I think I was among the first 20-30 people to get on the list and only the first ~100 people have them. Last time I heard the list was well over 800-900 people long and I assume it's much longer now.

The next run is said to be bigger than 100 units...but if you aren't on the list don't expect to be able to get one until christmas/2017 at the earliest, unless you happen to get one 2nd hand/get someone's spot/go the DIY route. DIY kits are available soon but those require some pretty fine soldering, so make sure to know what you're doing if going that route.

videogameperfection.com, ships from UK. It was about $230 USD shipped, which I think is really great compared to the framemeister. The only thing I don't like about it is that it doesn't have BNC inputs and doesn't do s-video/composite, but I guess you could always get external transcoders for that. There's a few features coming in the next firmware updates that are really nice too.

Yep that's correct. From what I've seen, I think in North America (at least in the graphics/production business) it seems the LaCie rebadging is what's usually available from people who have not scrapped them yet.

What's the difference between a PVM and a BVM?

>> No.3418382

>>3418369

PVM: "Professional Video Monitor". Really refers to the specific line of Sony Trinitron "PVM" model monitors but sometimes people use PVM as a catch-all for any professional CRT monitor (Panasonic/JVC/Ikegami etc.).

BVM: "Broadcast Video Monitor". Usually refers to Sony's BVM line of monitors which are usually higher quality and more expensive than PVMs. Typically used in the broadcast/tv/movie production industry.

Actually, I got 3 control units with the BVMs/L5 and getting a 4th soon when I go back to take the rest of the lot. One controller is semi-broken but I know the problem and it's an easy 10 minute fix. The BVMs also came loaded with multiple RGB boards (3 each I think). Got 2 memory cards as well. They are actually in the original pic on top of those 13" that are on top the BVMs/L5, but the ceiling lamp was blocking it. If the monitor's serial ports are all connected, you actually only need one controller to control all of them (up to 32 or 64...I forget) just by using one as a master monitor.

I also bought a USB RS485/422 adapter and when I have some time I will try coding a simple app/script for controlling the BVMs/L5 through a computer or remotely from a smartphone. If I like it, I might consider using an arduino with WiFi or IR instead.

>>3418229
>PVM-2530
I guess the 2530 is nice if you want the extra size... it's probably the most "retro" in terms of aesthetics (both cosmetically and display @ ~500 TVL). Definitely a preference thing but I guess there's the argument that it has a more 'authentic' look than the higher TVL/newer sets, but at that point wouldn't later gen high-end consumer TV be almost on par with that, minus RGB and maybe a bit better colour quality? From what I've seen s-video would probably be on par with SD Wegas. RGB would be nice but the set is also 14+ years older than these newer PVMs, so the chances of actually getting a nice unit are lower. Plus you have to deal with the non-standard RGB connector. I know a few people that have had 20/2530's and never looked back after 'upgrading' to a newer model. I technically already own the one I mentioned since I paid for the whole lot, I think I'll pick it up if I have the room next time.

Every individual set was configured after coming off the line and before being sent out of the factory. Doing a factory reset will not only get rid of any changes made since it left the factory, but also that original calibration as well. This will leave you with a pretty bad picture at best.

If the input is still accessible but isn't displaying/detecting anything coming across it, I would think it may be the port itself and not something that a factory reset of the service menu could fix.
It's possible there may be something in the service menu that affect this, but I just took a look at the settings for mine (HS420) and GOOD LORD is there a shit load of junk in there.

I had thought all 'L' models were newer than the M models but maybe that's not the case? The 20L2's have the option for input cards, but didn't come with any. Am I better off keeping the M4U instead of a 20L2? That might also work out better because I would be able to have a matching TATE/YOKO pairs with 20L2s and M2Us and not have to split them up. If possible, reset the PS3's display settings by holding the power button while turned on, connect it via composite THEN connect it to the TV via HDMI and see what happens.

Well, unless you already have a scaler/line doubler you will need one to run retro consoles on the LaCie or similar, it does not support 15khz. These can be hard to find and can run you additional $230-600 or higher for a *good*/lagless one, although there are cheapy ones you can get for less. If you don't use a scaler it's appropriate for 480p-1080p+ RGBHV (so computers and any console with VGA support) and can run higher reses than that at 60+ hz well.

The L5 is not very picky with sync and it will also take everything 1080i and lower. You can plug composite/s-video/component/RGB straight into it so it's probably better if you just want to play retro consoles, and may actually be easier and possibly cheaper than a PC CRT setup if you want to buy a nice scaler/transcoder that have all the inputs you need to go along with it. If you're just emulating on PC, the PC CRT is probably a better choice to start with since they are cheaper and easier to find.

What does the tracking say? I'd possibly be a little concerned about a domestic package sitting at an office for a long period of time. Could just be a normal delay, but maybe try calling USPS (or whoever is shipping it) to see if they can give any more info.

I'm not really too worried about how it's gonna be shipped, the seller had a lot of positive feedback and what he sold was mostly big electronics like this. Then I found an ad for a Vacuum, some other crap and the KV. After some back and forth (during which the owner stressed how nice the TV is and that it is great for "retro games") we agreed to meet. Nothing prepared me.... I showed up, this guy opens his garage.

He had a frogger machine, centipede, and about 5 other consoles. He had a NES, a panasonic and JVC CRT next to each other. He also had a very old RCA. He told me he had several more machines in his basement along with his retro consoles and his other TVs. If it bothers you that much then you can.
But mark the original positions (draw a line with a sharpie on the side) so you can easily reverse your changes. An alternative would be to measure the resistance with an ohmmeter, but you need to pay great attention how the trimmer is wired up.
>That is something I can handle, can you point me toward some information I could read up on?
Well, google it.
However, I can tell you right now that it's not a bad idea to use a modern monitor as reference and display the greyscale pattern (or something with white and dark gray spots) on both the monitor and your CRT. That's how I did it on my Trinitrons, there were 2 trimmers for green and blue called G. DRIVE and B. DRIVE. It's not 100% perfect but very close.

Colors are deeper, resolution is higher so it'll be a little crisper. Contrast is a little better, less likely to crush blacks on one end or whites on the other. Also most later PVMs will let you adjust H size and V size from the front panel controls. And the HV regulation is better, so for example white text on a black background is less likely to bloom out into a faint grey cloud, among other things. The differences are mostly subtle, and nothing like the huge jump you get from say RF on a 1991 bargain set to s-video on a 2000's trini.

Honestly, if your trinitron is in good condition I wouldn't really bother getting a PVM unless you want native 480p and up or you're looking for a smaller desk/1-person CRT in the first place.

There are relatively few pro monitors that are much bigger than 20" and aren't either beat-to-shit old, ridiculously expensive, or both.

This circuit appears to be intended for arcade boards, and I haven't built it yet. I've currently got a RGB->YPbPr converter on the way for cheap that I'm intending to crack open and reverse engineer.

Yeah, I'm >>3411495 , and just picked up a free KV-27FS120 . The size is about perfect, can play comfy 2-player but still "only" weighs 100 pounds so I can get it in and out of my car and tv stands all by myself.

Looking at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FD_Trinitron/WEGA , it looks like the 32's jump to ~160 and the 36"s to around ~200-220 ish. I know we had a 36" growing up that was a pain in the dick to move.

I'd keep an eye out for 27"s once you move, they seem pretty nice. As far as convergence goes, PVMs don't really have any advantages - doesn't matter how tight it was leaving the factory if every john fuckface owner banged it around.

Mine isn't quite as nice as that, his seems to be better taken care of. The retron had my DSLR when I had it setup, currently it's in a closet while I move some stuff around. I'll take pics when I get it set back up.

I definitely recommend getting a Nintendo S-video cable, it'll work for SNES, N64, and Gamecube and is the best low-hassle, cheap(ish) solution for connecting all three to consumer sets. I wasn't satisfied with any of the third-party ones, so I imported one of the first-party Nintendo ones from Japan (~$35). Worth it.

I'd still casually keep an eye out for a good 13" or 20" PVM/BVM etc for your one player needs. "Anonymous of Jacksonville" has a whole storage unit full of them and he might be amenable to selling one. I looked it up, and the 13" consumer Trinitrons are only like an inch shorter than the 13"/14" PVMs. There's not too much reason other than cost to buy a 13-20" consumer trini instead of a PVM.

It's worth it to buy consumer 5-9" because the PVMs are fucking deep in relation to screen size, and >20" consumer trinis are worth it since the only PVMs that big are old as fuck (mid 80s), the 24" BVM is still only ~20" when displaying 4:3, and the 32" BVM is expensive as fuck (~$4k). you'd get massive issues. In any colour CRT, the electron guns draw a straight line from the neck to the phosphor coating of the front glass, and in doing so, go *through* the mask of grid that isolates the colours. Those slits are aligned so that only the right colour can go through the right hole. Flat CRT's make this more complicated, the grid or mask had to be even more delicate, and magnified problems with geometry and convergence about fivefold. A convex CRT would blow things out even further. Think of the mask of grid on the inside of the screen, and what the angles in it would have to be like so that only the blue gun could go through the blue holes. Warping the screen further that way, the apertures would have to be soooo narrow. It could be done, but it would never have been economical to do so.

it is matched as the console outputs are 75 ohm, the termination on the monitor/display is 75 ohm and the cabling itself is also guess what? 75 ohm. You don't need to match a resistance value that is already there. a good coax scart cable has guess what? no resistors to gnd. good coax a/v cables also have no resistors because they weren't built with garbage components.

good cable only needs caps on some consoles to brighten the image or none if an rgb amp is used.

And the console outputs are 75 Ohms precisely because there are 75 Ohm resistors at the outputs of the decoder. This is because the output of the video amps are typically of low impedance.
If the console does not have resistors between the decoder and the AV connector, like the Genesis, you have to put the resistors somewhere in the path, regardless of cable type.

>TL;DR there is no variation between console> 75 ohm coax+bnc>75ohm terminated display. the impendence is already matched fgt

pedantry:

Those *standards* do not mandate the bandwidth needed for higher resolutions.

It would be possible to make say your own 720p composite signal, which would be the easy part. The hard part would be getting other people to accept the spec, namely TV manufacturers. 15khz sync rate was the dominant television standard for like 60+ years, and 99.99% of consumer sets couldn't sync any faster anyways so there was a lot of inertia there.

As it went down, people decided it would be better to just make a "fresh start". Since they got a do-over, there was no need to deal with the chroma subsampling you get from composite and s-vid, so they went with three full bandwidth channels worth of chroma. There's nothing to say they couldn't have made "hi-def" composite or s-video.

Dealing with "why americlaps got YsPbPr instead of RGBS or RGBHV" is another matter entirely. I'm pretty sure it has to do with how DVDs encode data internally.

S-video and composite use NTSC color encoding, which is very specifically designed for 15KHz video. You can't just use the same color encoding for 30KHz sources; you'd have to change the color subcarrier frequency to get more chroma resolution and the TV decoding the signal would need a dedicated decoder for it. NTSC is basically a hack, anyway, for putting color information in a one-dimensional, black-and-white signal. There's no reason to use it for video game consoles except that TVs support it.

My family had a B&O Beovision TV back in the 90s and we used that till 2003 or something. Every console game looked on it, even NES ones. I can't remember if ours supported it but I believe most B&O CRTs support both PAL and NTSC.

I'm not sure if what those reviewers say about them can be trusted as I don't try to trust my memories too much but I really gotta grab one of those again.

If you can get one for less than 80 bucks then I would personally say get it. Keep in mind however that those TVs are VERY heavy, especially if you want to keep it on the second floor or higher.

Hope this thread is not dying, because I'm sure someone here could help me.

What is the best way to connect / config a Raspberry Pi to use with a PVM? I've heard about HDMI to RGB converters, but I guess you still need to make some changes to emulator or Raspberry Pi settings to get the correct resolution and scanlines?

So I'm on vacation, and going without my CRT is pretty hard. I saw a pair of these at the dollar store, and was wondering if they would make my laptop's screen look like it has scanlines for when I play retro games with an emulator.

Hey, >>3424226 here again

Filed a Paypal dispute with the seller and Pitney Bowes, hopefully I'll get a full refund. At this point I'm probably just gonna save up for a Framemeister so my SCART cables I bought don't go to waste, and get a decent Trinitron to replace the shitty Panasonic CT-20SX11CE I got from my sister. I wanna get something with Component and 480p support so I can hook up the PS2/Xbox to it, I've heard people bitch about lag on ones like those but is it really as bad as people say?

Honestly, most Xbox games are going to look better over component on a modern display. The vast majority of the library supports 480p, 16:9, and 5.1. 720p support is more common than you'd think as well, and looks incredible. And some games support 1080i too! As for the PS2, almost everything is 480i and 4:3 with only stereo or "simulated" surround, so you'd want an FV300 or 310 Trinitron. 480i, 4:3, speakers that are far better than they have any right to be, component/s-video/composite with a great 3D comb filter, and fucking astounding picture quality.
