Play 1 first, if you're not familiar with the series.

I love both games, but 1 has a special place in my heart for both being a throwback to the Game Boy series, and for (despite being a rushed release and neutered because of it) having a very interesting setting.

If you like it, then move on to SaGa Frontier 2, but be advised it's a completely different game on nearly all counts. Still very enjoyable, and to this day one of the most beautiful 2D games I've ever seen.

SaGa Frontier is better for beginners.
SaGa Fronter 2 requires more effort to not be a frustrating experience and it's really not a good choice for newcomers as it's way more strict in a lot of things.

They have little in common with each other though, so if you don't like one you can play the other and see if you like it more.

Whenever you need help just ask, it's one of the hardest games in the series, don't feel too bad about it.

Doubtful, but if there's another after Scarlet Grace, there may be hope.

I'd really just like a remake of Frontier with more weapon types (and associated waza), and the cut content in place. Even if it were mobile only or download only.

So far it looks like it will have a medieval-ish/renaissance fantasy setting, that and the fact that gods will be as important as they were in the first Romancing SaGa.

Of course, this is SaGa we're talking about so it's totally possible there will be some sci-fi elements as well, but I wouldn't count on that judging by what little we've seen, maybe some automatons and steampunk stuff, but sci-fi might be a bit of a stretch.

Why is this game fucking impossible? I got to the fourth mission (I think, the one where you're drugged and brought before the pervert king guy) on Emelia's story and every enemy one shots. I know there's level scaling so there's no way I'm under-leveled. Am I playing this game wrong or something? This is beyond frustrating.

>> No.3415106

>>3415070
Actually that part is a bit of a difficulty spike, as in I'm fairly certain the encounter level is higher than normal. It's not so bad if Asellus and White Rose are of a comparable strength to Emelia when she gets there, but if you power up too much before that it's almost a solo mission for her because the other two will get knocked out in one hit, it's that sort of thing.

There's another mission in the same complex, but in both cases the only time you have to fight is in the one battle where you pick up Asellus and White Rose.

No now that I think about it, I seem to remember there's a rather tough fight against some robots right outside the commander's room. At any rate, you can go and recruit Zozma after getting the other two, in one of the rooms in the complex he's disguised as a civilian or something. With all four of them contributing, you should be able to work out a strategy against whatever robots you end up having to fight. The worst case scenario is that you end up having to fight multiple R&Rs, in which case your only hope is to use MirrorShade/GlassShield and pray, while hopefully having some way of picking them off before they get you first, or else reload an earlier save and buy the (very expensive!) WonderBangle from Manhattan to give Emelia a 100% chance of blocking their railguns.

Emelia's last boss is also pretty scary, I recommend back up saves before traveling to any areas you might not be able to come back from.

>> No.3415119

Did you just do Emelia's story-mission straight one by one or one or something?

Better equipment, usually by diving into certain dungeons, might help, that's a way to beat "level scaling"

That's another thing, I've spent a good hour so far just roaming the overworld and going to the different places. I've managed to get a couple characters and some magic and stuff but I'm not really sure what I'm supposed to be doing most of the time. Are there any places/dungeons that it would be a good idea for me to check out?

>> No.3415185

>>3415135
The two dungeons in shingrow are usually good just to run through and pick up all the treasures. Harmonium equipment is good to wear and the hyperscale and duelgun in the wrecked ship can be sold for money in scrap. There's also Mu's tomb and Sei's tomb in Shrike, the hide rune cave under koorong, the dragon horde on the shield card quest, furdo's gallery in magic kingdom, wakatu, luminous labyrinth and omble (you can only actually visit one, if you try to do the other your allies will pop out and go without you), the treasures at the lord's mansion in owmi (several you can pick up without even entering the dungeon), and in general every character will have some manner of areas unique to their quest with available loot

if you actually just search all the areas thoroughly, even without doing much fighting you can get enough gear and money to equip a full party

Okay thanks for the tips, they are much appreciated. I'd only found the two tombs in Shrike so far and I got obliterated by a big fake chest in Mu's tomb and hadn't been back. Will try these out though.

You do need to be on the appropriate magic quest to fully explore some places. In Mu's tomb there is the trapped treasure chest room, but that one room is the only room there that has a trapped treasure.

Not that those are the only trapped treasures in the game.

Speaking of Mu's Tomb, do not under any circumstances equip the Blood Chalice. It is thoroughly cursed.

Regardless, good luck and try your best!

It arrived today. But my new memory cards were delayed for 2 weeks. The manual makes the game sound pretty complicated.
>The Chronicle begins with the birth of humanity ... The player will be able to move through the dates forward or backward
This is some Dwarf Fortress kind of shit.

Am I about to stumble into the most complex game of all time?

>there are certain situations where the opportunity to select an individual character and engage in a "Duel" combat will appear.
I will solo the entire game.

The manual also mentions some kind of combo-log but it seems to focus on talking about the Pocketstation. While teaching me how to use it, it also makes a note of mocking me because it's not for gaijin. I'll get my revenge.

Unlimited: Saga is a game you can only truly appreciate and understand if you're deep in the series and you really like RPGs, it's a wonderful game far ahead of its time but in the same exact way Wizardry 4 is, it's only for the most patrician of patricians, mere mortals can rarely appreciate it and see the greatness of it.
The only mistake besides making it completely menu based, was not making it as the swan song of the series.
>>3416463
>>The Chronicle begins with the birth of humanity
That's not true, humans have been around since millennias already.
Basically, the game has a linear story, but you're free to progress through the storyline in a non linear way, mainly because the game has two different generations or familiies of characters that coexist and sometimes collaborate in the same world, but also because you can simply choose a scenario that might be further on in the future compared to other available scenarios and vice versa, on new game+ the game also unlocks all of the scenarios at the same time compared to the normal game in which you still have to unlock scenarios by completing others.
Needless to say, this can lead to pretty good sequence breaking potential and some nice challenges too, but it's better for you to first play the scenarios in chronological order as the story is kind of elaborated for SaGa standards and might become a bit confusing.
Not to mention, SaGa Frontier 2 drops the BR so each scenario has its own BR, progressing in a non linear way without knowing what you're going to fight against can be very frustrating, especially because the final boss is very tough and you'll need to plan your growth well enough, especially since you can't exit neither a story scenario nor the final scenario once you start them, so you'll have to maximize your growth when it's possible to do so.

Asellus Route Spoilers

Trying all-mystics in Asellus's route. Most of us are barely at 400HP and we're at the end.
Bat Knight went down. A lot more exciting this time as we didn't steamroll him. And with Battle5 playing, it was a climactic showdown with Ciato.
Lion Princess was still easy as shit. How come she can learn sword techniques, anyway?
Giant was a BITCH. Eventually I figured out that he does GaleSlash every 3rd round, so I knew when to defend. Then I figured out some good 3 and 4 level combos and barely took him down.

Orlouge is a whole new mess. Last I checked I was at BR5, but I might have crossed to BR6. But if Gamefaqs is correct, both of those ranks put him at 75000 HP. If he is nice and doesn't keep petrifying us, I might whittle him down, but I don't know if I'll survive ThreeMistresses.

It's funny, from the start I planned on getting Asellus to learn RosarioImpale. Now that she has it, she's mostly doing DoubleSlash because it just seems to fit in with all of our combos.

Finished Emelia's story in Saga Frontier. That 4th mission took me fucking forever but after that I checked out a bunch of the caves and side quests and stuff and stocked up on a bunch of good equipment and the rest of the game was manageable. Had to grind for like two hours to beat Diva though.

So which ending did you get? Emelia has two. Who was your party at the end?

For me the hardest part about the Trinity Base is just that I always get lost. Even if I know where I'm supposed to go I just keep wandering in circles.

I like the way Diva comes into battle. The way the organ music is playing, and fades out as the high pitched whirring of Diva hovers down. Sends shivers down my spine.

I got the ending where it's revealed Joker is Emelia's fiance and then it cuts on a still of a wedding, not sure if that's the good or the bad.

I didn't have that much trouble navigating, I just did a pretty basic sweep of the place and eventually ended up at the boss (and then got destroyed and had to grind for a while).

If you want the other ending, when you're investigating Baccarat, after you find Joker in the underground cave, explore the caverns a bit more and you'll find something special. Of course this would probably require replaying the entire route unless you kept a lot of saves.

Giant gets rekt by GlassShield and JetBoots though. LionPrincess also can't learn sword techniques. It's more correct to say she just already knew them from the start since she used to be human.

Orlouge is tough but; he uses a lot of single target techniques and his main screen-wipe attack is one of the weaker. The main threat is status effects, and for that you can shut down his petrify attack with Rouge's PsychicPrison, but with a team of just Mystics, it'll probably be a good idea to get MagicHeal on everyone for Charm and equip them all with SnakeOil/Backpack foor petrify.

There's also the fact that TimeLord is a mystic.

Did you try Using TripleThrust/Headwind/RisingNova or anything else for combos instead? Not that I ever had a problem getting RosarioImpale to work into a combo with PhantasmShot/GriffithScratch/TigerRampage.

You do have TigerRampage on your mystics right?

Actually you could even just have Asellus use TigerRampage, barehanded fuck-your-shit-up Asellus is pretty rude. Huge stats with the scaling on MartialArts waza.

>> No.3417135

>>3417128

>get MagicHeal on everyone for Charm and equip them all with SnakeOil/Backpack foor petrify.
I made sure all of my people have some kind of healing. Everyone has Starlight Heal, 3 of us have Magic Heal (And Liferain on one). Asellus has the backpack, just in case.

>GriffithScratch/TigerRampage.
Don't have those. I focused on absorbing Liches, my idea was that I'd teach everyone Realm Magic and do lots of chains with it, hoping the high Int from Liches would make it powerful. In the end, only Zozma uses realm magic.
My best combo so far is DeadlyPowder-Implosion-PhantasmShot-DoubleSlash. Anytime I use Rosario Impale, Asellus just decides to act on her own.

>There's also the fact that TimeLord is a mystic.
I wanted to avoid him this time because he made my previous runs too easy. Plus I also don't feel like completing Rune or Tarot quests. If I absolutely have to, I'll at least go teach some people TimeLeap or something.

You gotta get an all-chick party going. If every character's menstrual cycles sync up, they have a better chance at performing combos.

>> No.3417203

>>3417145
You can get TigerRampage by absorbing a Kraken, Chariot, or DevilSquid(!) with MysticGlove, meaning you can technically get it very early.

You can get GriffithScratch from absorbing Dullahan, Gargantu, Thundragon, Genbu, Griffin, Ettin, Ankheg, Nidheg or BlackDragon with MysticSword, which means you can also get GriffithScratch independent of your Battle Rank. It's really up to you whether that's worth not using the MysticSword slot for MagicHeal instead though (Unicorn, Sporepile, Treant, SunFlower, WaterFolk, StraySheep, Sphinx, WhipJelly, LivingArmor, Sprite, Unidine, WormBrood).

In terms of using magic spells for single target, the ranking is:

Tower
PhantasmShot (as long as you get Cockatrice or Reaper, which is primarily dependent on your casting stats, with a set of full casting based mystic absorbs, should be almost always)
TimeEclipse
DarkSphere
Implosion
VaporBlast
Energy Chain
Saber
RavaShot

None of which except for Tower is stronger than MegaWindBlast, btw.

Actually, Graviton from the Mec's FortBody is almost that strong. Mecs are pretty much strongest race overall.

It's probably better to consider the portraits as a graphical indicator of what phase the fights in

IIRC Orlouge is one of those bosses where each turn he proceeds through phases using different abilities, then after a certain number of turns or after a certain HP threshold shit will get real, and he'll start spamming his worst status effect attacks and 3 Mistresses until you kill him. In a situation like that you should remember that he's not actually on the level of MasterRing and won't actually use his screenwipe every turn, and it's not strong enough to completely wipe you out either, but also that defending will not protect you from status effects. Instead you have to use aggressive healing tactics and try to get your party to a state where everyone that's in fighting condition also has Full HP, so that you can launch an all-out combo (you need to have an all-out combo, especially with a full mystic team you need to have a combo), then likely get hit with 3 Mistresses in the same turn, have to recover, and avoid backsliding while he hammers you with status effects and single target spells during the recovery phase.

Which is to say it's a battle of attrition.

Actually there are a decent number of spells that gain more benefit from Willpower, though there are also spells that benefit more from Psychic.

The ratio tends to be about 1/2/2 on average for Int/Wil/Psy when casting spells.

Incidentally, Guns seem to use the same stats or almost the same stats, and a TwoGun Boundshot with two LightRifles boosted with Weapon buffs during battle up to 99 is just about the most damage a human can do to a single target without using Tower or DSC.

I took advice from above and got TigerRampage. Great attack and combos so easily, with a Lv5Combo we do 10k damage. Even a Lv4 combo does 8k which suffices. Kind of funny seeing everyone just run up to Orlouge and start punching him.

It's still not enough, though. Back to the insufficient WP issue. Mesarthim and Silence only get 3 shots in my current state; Mesarthim needs her WP for Liferain too. As well, once his portraits start, they often break our chain. Once 3Mistresses starts, we're too focused on healing.

I hoped to win without going out to raise stats, but it might be required for this party. I need health to sustain more than one hit, and I need WP to support my firepower. I guess I don't have to worry too much about Orlouge getting any stronger, I believe his HP modifier never goes above x3, and at BR5 or 6 I'm already there, if I recall. Can't get worse.

If you need a way to do damage with JP, try using PhantasmShot>Implosion>PhantasmShot. You can make a 5 person combo with just those two spells. Use that at the start of the fight, then blitz him with TigerRampage once he gets serious to bring him down. If Asellus has enough WP you can even let her Rampage the whole fight since it will work into the combo. Definitely don't underestimate the power of PhantasmShot.

The problem with doujin albums is that they're dependent on the fanbase of the games first and their own popularity second, so unless you live and japan, grab a copy in your local shop and upload it it will be hard for other people to get it, even Youtube doesn't have a lot of doujin albums.

Anyway, since Anon is still playing Frontier I decided to start a session of Solo playthroughs, I never did it for Frontier.
Currently 32 min. in Red's quest, I've just finished wandering into Sei's tomb to get all the treasure and he's already learned both Suplex and Babel Crumble, and I'm just on the Shrike event on the Cygnus.

On pretty much every run now I go to Sei's tomb first to grab the gear. Really I just want the shield, but I don't think I can get it without getting the sword and magatama first.
I also like to fight the Dead Knights because I seem to spark lots of stuff on them. Same with the Gaeatoad in Shingrow, if I go there early enough and just use super weak attacks, I can get all my humans to learn a bunch of weapon arts before he dies. It's especially great if I paralyze him.

>Suddenly this turns erotic and fascinating.
You really liked Asellus, did you? Well, she's the most popular MC for a reason after all.
>but I don't think I can get it without getting the sword and magatama first.
It depends.
I solo'd the skellies with Red just by turning into Alkaiser and spamming Air Throw to bypass Deflect, it takes two Air Throws to kill one Dead Knight when turned into Alkaiser and chances are you'll spark Suplex or something else and oneshot one of them anyway, not to mention, you can can use one magic stone to wittle them down and bumrush them with your party if you're playing as someone else and not soloing them.
It's hard if you have people who use guns because it's pretty much impossible to learn CrossShot that early in the game but as long as you have a mage and/or a hard hitter you're set, and most character can abuse tricks like getting the Ashura in the case of Asellus or T260G being T260G, but again, as long as you have more than two people it's usually manageable, hard, but manageable.
I'm a bit worried about soloing a few bosses, I'd like to not use magic if possible and go full Martial Arts super sentai, but that'll require more time for grinding stats and waza, and the fights would also take more time.

I just can't accept how much they've butchered the characters in the translation though, Fuse's introduction and his bantz with Red are great, it's a shame the localization fucked up big time, someone should do a retranslation patch so that the characters are actually characters.

>I'd be pretty surprised if Red didn't throw out at least one〝やれやれだぜ”
Iirc, he doesn't, Harid did in RomaSaGa3 though.
There are some things and wordplays that aren't reall possible to translate, for instance, when Red meets Asellus on the Cignus he says:

>アセルス姉ちゃん!
Big Sis Asellus!
>誰
Who is it?
>やっぱりアセルス姉ちゃんだよ!俺だ,れっと。
That's really you big sis Asellus, it's me (Retto)
>烈人君!
Retto-kun!

This is a wordplay on Red's name, basically, Asellus was Red's babysitter when he was little and she nicknamed him 烈人, which could be read as Retto, similar to his name in japanese, Reddo (レッド), the kanji used in Asellus' nickname can be roughly translated as "impetuous/energetic man" which is of course a reference to Red's character and his own shtick of hotheaded, gutsy sentai.
Then again, certain parts of the scripts were just butchered, Fuse is one of those characters that lost most of his character and mannerism, like when he thanks Campbell's receptionist in Manhattan saying サンキュー、かわいい子ちゃん...(THANK YOU, cutie...), you could have used Spanish or something since he used English or even use japanese and make him say "Arigato, cutie..." or something.
I mean, Fuse's mannerism isn't easy to properly translate, but they sure didn't even try, and it's a shame since part of his character is the contrast of him acting serious and professional in front of Campbell for instance and then turning into, well, Fuse for the rest of the game, you can't quite understand why he's so beloved by fans until you read him in japanese, he's a lovable slouch, vaguely reminiscent of Lupin actually.

And goddamnit I would have never imagined that the Cygnus battle against the Platys would be so hard to solo, it's impossible without grinding, those fucking assholes immediately do a 4 men Beak combo for 340 or so damage, it's the fifth time I'm trying to kill them with Double Gale Slash but no luck so far, I've been grinding for half an hour to the point I'm even getting Gaeatoads in random encounters and I'm still not fast enough to get the first turn.

It's pointless, the platys triggered 4 men combo with 100% accuracy all the time, I had both KO throw and Swayback and it didn't trigger a single time.
I had to grind my Quickness up to 25 and then pray my Handblaster would paralyze all of them, I did it in the end, but it took something like 15 tries and by the time I was done I was fighting Trisauruses in the fucking Cygnus of all place to grind my stats, it was hell I tell you.
Anyway, now I'm hunting gear around the world, I cleared up Owmi and I'm currently in Koorong, problem is Red is too slow and if I get more than one tough enemy I'm forced to turn to Alkaiser to survive, the grinding in the Cygnus threw off my plans, I didn't expect that fight to be so vicious to solo, that reminds me I'll be forced to make an exception for Coon when I go to Virgil's place too, can't possibly beat the Lava Slimes alone with a monster.
Timer is at 3:10, the good thing is I've already sparked quite a lot of stuff so all I need is stat ups to make Red beefier, got the Mind magic gift in Kyo during the Cygnus quests too for self heal, I don't think I'll need other magic than maybe the Shield Card, but I'm thinking of getting the Ashura, training Red with Guns might take more time than I'm willing to spend on him.
Overall it's a fun challenge, gotta be extra careful and all, I wonder if I'll be able to beat the two dragons though.

Because I stupidly wanted to be a true Super Sentai Alkaiseranger and not use magic, but fuck that, I need to get it if I want to beat this game solo at a reasonable pace, group fights fuck me up and respawning slimes are terrible to solo considering the fifth one is on the back row and can't be reached until there's only one covering it at least.

Beating bosses isn't a problem really, I can handily do around 4000-5000 damage or so with just a Cross Shot without turning into Alkaiser, soon I'll also be able to buy a Zero Sword so I'll be doing even more damage, and I didn't even get to 50 STR, by the time I'll get to Black X I'll probably have much higher stats too.
I usually put my Powered Suit on when it's boss time and let Red rip and tear stuff, That coupled with Budowear, the Magatama and another accessory makes him pretty much the perfect one on one tank, Excel Guard+Swayback minimize the amounts of attacks that can get through my defenses as well, Psycho Armor is another asset to further reinforce Red but there's usually no need to boost his defenses further I'd rather cast the Power Rune to end the fight quickly or the Vitality Rune to stay in a safe area for healing.

The problems arise when something has a shield or other kinds of defenses like Deflect, at that point I'm forced to Babel Crumble all day otherwise I'll waste a lot of WP for nothing, and multiple enemies, since no matter how high my defenses are, they do a combo and I'm dead.
All in all I have the feeling Frontier isn't so good for soloing, at least not like Minstrel Song, mostly because story boss grunts have more stats than their normal encounter versions making them a bitch to deal with, coupled with puzzle fights like the slimes in Shingrow or the Lava Slimes in Mosperiburg the game is either too tricky or simply impossible to solo, especially with the old limited number of commands design.

I did get a DefendWear and I'm currently wearing it, eventually I'll switch my PoweredSuit with the SprigganSuit.

I'm currently experimenting though, I want to see if it's possibly to beat Tanzer alone since I'm going to have to do so with Blue, but judging by the respawning Slimes in Shingrow I fear it will be mandatory to have another party member to touch the rune unless you can reach it when just one slime is in the battle, I'm afraid it's not going to work with just one character, that said I'm doing fine for the rest, no boss can really hurt me or put me in a danger zone.
I'm also tempted to fight the dragons for the Tarot Quest just to see how feasible they are to solo, I really want to see how much I can squeeze out of this run considering Red is one of the monster trio, better see how much I can abuse Alkaiser.

So far there's two strict exceptions I've found for Solo runs in Frontier, Tanzer and Virgil's palace as Coon/Riki, those are, or should be mechanically impossible to solo no matter what, I don't think there are any other exceptions.

>>3426514
>Will Godless trigger multiple times I wonder?
Sure, as long as you have the WP to sustain the cost of multiple Godless in a sequence of attacks, Counter waza have checks for each separate attack that triggers them until the end of the turn, you can Swayback all you want for instance, this is more noticeable during solo plays when all the enemies concentrate their attacks on one character, same thing for Kasumi or Dragon Turn.
>>Beating MasterRing with just Riki
Eh, this is something I've been thinking about today, I don't think monsters have any form capable of soloing MasterRing's Onslaught.
Then again, you can't possibly solo the Lavaslimes either so I guess that doing a Coon solo run is completely out of the question, a shame.
>>Beating Spriggan with just Lute
The problem with Spriggan is that you're very likely to run out of WP, but considering Lute is a human I don't think it's actually impossible with a good setup and maxed stats, it will take a while though.

You could also theoretically use something like glass shield or bolt barrier, somehow get Blue to not be faster than the slime, and have it attack him first on the same turn he goes to touch the rune, but that sounds like abject suffering

In japanese you can download the Essence of SaGa Frontier volume from the download folder in the pastebin.
Though if you want a quick rundown of cut content:

>Fuse and a little girl were supposed to be MCs, the little girl got scrapped out of development early but Fuse was a late cut
>Fuse's quest was designed around the other MCs, you could choose to assist whoever you wanted in theri own quests and learn some more about each MC, the short novel about Fuse is basically the script for his own quest
>Asellus was supposed to have more storyline with Nusakan and Furdo, both were cut
>Asellus and White Rose could have escaped from Facinaturu jumping through Kurenai, they would have ended up in Mosperiburg naked
>Red was supposed to have alternate endings with Yuria through a hidden affection meter
>There was a supposed Biolab storyline but that got cut as well
>Cube should have got more exposition and that would have been tied into the IRPO storyline, Imperial SaGa recently made such content into questlines in there.

This is more or less all the stuff that we missed on, naturally, some things were also rather different in the early development, the game should have been Romancing SaGa 4 for instance.
>>3426572
>do you really need the overdrive trick before that?
No, of course not.
Your tactic sounds good but both Glass Shield and Bolt Barrier do such measly damage it's not only a pain to set up but also to properly calculate the slime's remaining HP and a way ot get to that threshold first, it's way too much even for me.
I'd do the Arcane quest at this point, unless Anon>>3426582 here is right, I'll see if it's possible to do so, but first I'll get the rune in Koorong.

I'm just at 77 WP, Alkaiser gives a great boost through Raysword and having the Asura on will also help, so maybe I'll just drop Swayback for PowerRune, or I'll simply ditch PowerRune altogether in favor of SoulRune/Awakening, I'll have to test it.

Things won't sure go as smooth with Emilia or T260G though...

BlackX shoudn't be too much of a problem, Red is probably the easiest quest to solo, think the Cygnus part is the only really hard bit. One thing to keep in mind is the boss rush where you have to fight Shuzer, Arachne and Berva without being able to recover WP, if you're not using offensive magic or have a fuckload of WP that might be a bit difficult.

Buffs do wonders, and CrossShot only costs 5 WP, so I can reasonably spam it, consider that right now I barely broke through the 50 base Wil, I'm surely going to get at least 15 more before I get there, coupled with Asura and eventually, Lightsword I'm going to get even more powerful, I guess I'll be fine if I'm around 90-100 WP.
>>3426678
Soulrune it is then.
Doesn't Soulrune run out after a few turns though, or was it Awaken? I can't remember, I do remember that all the normal buffs last until the end of the fight or when you're ko'd, but I seem to remember there was a catch to SoulRune/Awaken.

Awakening doubles all your WP and JP costs from the start of the fight. In a way, this makes it stronger than SoulRune, because the damage techniques do is related directly with their cost, so in a high speed fight Awakening used with something like DSC will do tremendous damage, but you will also run out of WP/JP very fast.

SoulRune I'm not sure on it's actual effects, whether it simply buffs all your stats, whether that buff includes Wea/Def, or whether it adds an actual multiplier to your techniques. What I am sure of is that it makes you much stronger, it costs 7 JP, it lasts for 4 turns, and when it runs out you lose 1 LP.

I see, it's been a while since I had to play seriously through Frontier and I needed to recheck all of the spells.
Thanks for the tip Anon, though I don't know whether SoulRune is worth the trouble, soloing puts you in the defensive more often unless you're Blue, so having only 4 turns of an active buff for 7JP and a 1LP cost seems a waste of a slot.
I'll have to prioritize a good skillset that lets me cover my ass, I don't have to worry about comboing so I can just have one or two attacks to spam while all the rest is devoted to support/defense.
Anyway, I'll see for myself once I get it, if I do get it that is.

Lightsword has a magic based deflect that activates even if you don't use sword techniques. If you cast Lightsword then use the Lightsword as a sword and have deflect on your list, both deflects get a separate chance of activating increasing your chances of using deflect.

Alkaiser probably doesn't need SoulRune if his stats are high enough because they can't go over 99 regardless.

So, Anon was right, you can solo Tanzer, quite comfortably I may add, I worried for nothing.
Currently on Cindy's building, just learned the Soul Rune and got randomly possessed by a Glirandly, at this point I have no need for Light Sword anymore, which means I have one more command slot free.
About the Soul Rune, I'm not sure how it works exactly but I suppose it's a raw stat bonus buff for 4 turns, I tested it a bit and all the damage I do is increased, a normal punch on a pink fighter does around 700 damage, buffed with Soul Rune it does around 1100, a Slash with Glirandly does 600-650 normally and around 770 with Soul Rune buffs, same thing applies to defense, however, damage or defense doesn't increase when I turn into Alkaiser and use Soul Rune, possibly because I already hit 90 stats.
I don't think it's worth a slot for such a bonus, and it runs out after 4 turns and costs me a LP on top of that.
Psycho Armor is beginning to become a waste of a slot, the meager defense bonus doesn't make it good enough to justify a slot for it when the Vitality Rune gives me 150 HP per turn anyway, much better than 20-40 HP damage less.
CrossShot hits for a stable 6000-6500 on most mooks, if I turn into Akaiser it goes up to 7500-8000, nothing is quite as powerful as that at the moment, I don't think I'll ever have anything as powerful and cheap honestly, unless I grind my STR, which is just 46 right now.
Once I finish Red's solo playthrough I guess I'll take on Blue's quest, or maybe Asellus', T260G's quest should also be very fast to solo if I abuse the Scrap trick, guess the only really long ones will be Emilia and Lute's quests since they can't abuse magic or henshin mechanics, and well, Lute is Lute.

I'd love to get DSC but Giant Swing seems to hate me, which is annoying because I learned Sliding, Suplex and Babel Crumble in the first twenty minutes of the game while getting Sei's stuff in Shrike, iirc Red doesn't have the talent to get Giant Swing so it's understandable but it still annoys me to no end, I'll probably go for it on Emilia's quest though.
Also, beaten the two dragons, got the Asura, currently in Kyo to fight Metal Black, Alkaiser is disgustingly strong with Vitality Rune as long as you don't run into big parties of strong monsters, that Glirandly possession truly helped a lot though.
On a second thought, I guess that Red would have more benefits from getting Dark Magic, he's not good with offensive magic unless you grind a lot so MegaWindBlast is kinda wasted on him, Shadow Servant could have been a more significant asset in the long run considering I'm basically untouchable as long as it's a one on one fight.

Frontier is a bit strange for the average RPG, certain regions, like TimeLord's region do feel surreal in both concept and execution, but that's part of the game's charm.
Hard to find such a varied universe in other games, Toku heroes, gay vampires, interdimensional universe busters warships, robots and transhumanists, undead skeleton kings, talking monsters, cops and Charlie's Angels expies all in the same world(s).
Guess you could thank Kikuchi, without him I don't think SaGa would have adopted such weird worlds, the most similar series I can think of is SMT, but it's not as extravagant as SaGa Frontier.
I'd love a remake that keeps the game sprite based, kinda like Unlimited handled the graphics but with more frames for the sprites.

Aaaaand it's done.

I must admit Black-X's cannon was vaguely threatening but none of his other attacks besides his draining one ever posed a threat, and I went balls to the wall, no shield, no evasive action, pure tanking.
Victory Rune is perhaps the best buff in the game, I could deal stable 7500 damage with double CrossShot, much more reliable than DSC against BlackX, as I expected, Psycho Armor was worthless on Alkaiser, I suppose it's another buff that raises your basic stats instead of adding some extra bonus, Vitality Rune was the pivotal spell overall, the rest was simply attacking and sometimes cure wih Mind Heal, if I did use a shield I probably wouldn't have needed Mind Heal, but the raw stat bonus felt more important to me, in the end, the strategy paid off.
Doing 26000 HP of damage with a perfect DSC is always something though.

Is the number of moves in DSC determined by luck, or is there some formula behind it? I always felt scammed when I'd waste all those WP for a measly 3 moves.
Also, what does DSC stand for? On the Essence translation blog, it says "Dangerous Suplex Combo", but I seem to remember reading "Dream Super Combo" somewhere.

I think I'll give up on Orlouge here. I don't think I built my party well. When we get to 3Mistresses, he's either breaking our combos, or we're spending too much time recovering. My new memory cards arrived so maybe it's a sign I should move on to SF2.

>Is the number of moves in DSC determined by luck
Can't tell, but seeing how Alkaiser had maxed stats and they didn't really seem to influence the checks I'd say it purely roll based.
It's great for Berva though, he won't be able to Swayback or Bervacounter DSC, three full DSC and he's gone, easy peasy, tough enemies with shields(Hello Dullahan) also eat shit from DSC, basically all wrassling/grappling moves bypass shield/counter/parry checks, that's why you should abuse them on the Dead Knights in Sei's tomb early on unless you're Blue, coupled with the fact that undeads are naturally weak against martial arts it's a great way to blast through them.
>On the Essence translation blog, it says "Dangerous Suplex Combo"

LordStar's buff is great, I considered using it but the fact that guns are by far the best offensive weapons and you need to at least have a shield on until you hit 90 in all stats doesn't make it too hot for solo, I'd rather leave an open slot for LightSword unless I'm Red/Asellus or put a Glirandly there, I guess I'll do use it for T260G's quests since I won't have standard equipment limitations and I can afford spamming Pluralslash with another stronger sword.
>>3430180
To add on what anon told you:
This game isn't as exploitable as the first Frontier, there's no Overdrive or other get out of jail for free cards you can play, while Frontier goes back to the GB SaGa standards Frontier 2 returns to the Romancing design, for many things Frontier 2 has many throwbacks to RomaSaGa2.
Weapon type damage is more important, magic goes back to elements so keep in mind that elemental weaknesses are a key feature here, you have a pseudoclass system too in the form of roles, which are a very important feature.
Also, Gustave's side is more story focused while Wil's side is more gameplay focused, and again, explore and fight, treasures are vital here and there's no BR holding you down.

V-Max is great and its stats are great too, maybe a few other bodies are more versatile, but unless I want to dick around with stuff like bits/Satellite Linker I don't think I'll use anything else when I do get it, then again, I don't really remember much about all the body types either so I guess I'll see when I do get to T260G.
I'll also need to recheck which mech drops which program, I do remember stuff like Pluraslash and Maxwell Program, but I'd like to get Tiger Rampage too if it doesn't end up to be too much of a hassle.

>> No.3431313

>>3431262
Type-1 Body has 7 empty slots, which you can happily fill with whatever you like. This means it has the highest potential stat totals and is the greatest option defensively. Absolutely the FortBody is better than the MecBody, and the MegaBeamSaber and V-System are great, but they aren't as good as SprigganSuits and OctopusBoards statistically, and the MBS is not the strongest sword at all. There's also the fact that any mec with TigerProgram doesn't need a sword, TigerRampage is stronger than PluralSlash.

Well, with a ZeroSword anyway. I don't know about a DragonSword. You have to get those as a rare drop from Thundragons, and they're as rare as it gets.

The EngineerCar type body obviously has the capability of repairs.

If T260G is the only mec I'm using, say in Red's scenario, I have 0 problems with setting her up for max stats with something like 2 OctopusBoards, 2PlutoArmors, 1 WarlordArmor, 1 Durahan Shield, and 1LightRifle.

Actually I think that's pretty much the best you can possibly do as far as mecs are concerned.

>TigerRampage is stronger than PluralSlash.
What if Tiger Rampage isn't stronger than a PluralSlash buffed with Victory Rune though? What if I use an Asura and do Plural Slash with it buffed with Victory Rune?
Victory Rune doesn't buff martial arts and I don't think Tiger Rampage is classified as a weapon waza since it doesn't use one.
>The EngineerCar type body obviously has the capability of repairs.
But it has slots filled with junk and the repair number is limited(20 uses iirc), at that point I'd rather waste a slot on a backpack since Instakits drop like candy when fighting mechs.
>I think that's pretty much the best you can possibly do as far as mecs are concerned.
I guess, problem is I'm going to solo, so I have to look at it in a different way.

Seven free slots sure look nice but I need to understand whether it's better to invest into PluralSlash or Tiger Rampage, then think about a good way for building a self sustaining T260G, the self-regen program isn't terribly effective as far as I remember, at least, not as Vitality Rune, so I can't depend on it as much as I would.
Then I'll have to consider all the pros and cons of the various body types...lots of work.

So, about the Victory Rune.
I checked times and again and I'm 100% sure it doesn't buff martial arts, as I see it, it adds some stat bonus onto every weapon equipped, possibly percentage based but I might be wrong here.
I checked with Red with and without transforming in Alkaiser, Martial Arts aren't influenced at all from Victory Rune, which makes sense, after all even the buff itself has a WEAP. sign once you use it, not a STR like other buffs.
This also confirms my hunch that Victory Rune can still stay very relevant at maxed stats whereas something like Soul Rune or Psycho Armor don't since they grant a raw stat bonus based on your character's stats.
In hindsight, it makes sense that they didn't do a buff related to Armor that works in the same way, you'd be invincible considering how many pieces of armor you can equip, especially on a mech.

I'd say don't grind until you reach the late ER, mostly because things can go pretty fast at early ER so it's easy to miss one quest because you just fought that one or two battles that makes you shift to the next ER.
Though honestly, unless you want to fight 10FS Saruin, you don't need to grind at all, by the time you reach the last ER you should be strong enough to fight him and you should have already understood how the system works so you can set good combos with debuffs and have the right magic/classes to deal with Saruin and the likes.
One other thing you should do is investing in equipment it's very easy to do so if you keep completing quests rather than fighting on the fields randomly, most starting quests also have generic boss formations that can be cleared pretty easily, forging also gives you extra bang for your buck so have someone who can mine stuff so you can get materials quickly, invest into stealth skills so you can avoid enemies and have someone who can open chests and dig up treasures, you'll get tons of money that way, especially by exploring Silver's cave.

Finally started, SF2 is great. I love the battle system, especially dueling. Discovering new arts by testing different combos is fun. Choosing who goes first in the party gives me a lot more control, but I haven't experimented with roles too much.
Haven't found many combos yet, but I stumbled across a level 4 combo using "FakeOut-Lawnmower-Woodstock-Needleshot". EXCITEMENT. Too bad I don't have a POCKETSTATION™ to save these for future reference.
Love the negotiation feature, helps save resources when you know you'll win.

However, I dislike how slow the fights feel. Maybe it's just me, but everything just moves kinda slowly. And at the end, when leveling up, I can't skip it, so I have to sit there while it slowly shows us our stat gains.

I also miss robots and guns and mystics. Wish I could just pull out a BoltThrower or a GrainCannon and start blasting shit. But this artwork is beautiful, it feels like I'm playing a picture book. And Cordelia is super cute, especially her duel animation, bouncy bouncy bouncy bouncy.

>I love the battle system, especially dueling. Discovering new arts by testing different combos is fun.
Fun thing, the manual had most if not all normal waza inputs for once, it didn't give you the hybrid arts commands though, but it's not like you really need those since Johan comes with Tornado Blade prelearned and almost nothing beats it in usefulness until the late game.
But yeah, the battle system is really fun, if not a bit risky when you duel, and the negotiation feature was great since it really rewards you if you can use it properly.
>Maybe it's just me, but everything just moves kinda slowly.
It's not just you, Frontier 2 is slow as molasses compared to Frontier, actually, it's probably the slowest game in the series overall.
>But this artwork is beautiful, it feels like I'm playing a picture book
Wait till you get to parts like Weissland, Schwarzmädchen/City of Night, Laubholz and all the various mid to late chapters, you'll see some really breathtaking stuff, certain dungeons like the Megaliths, the Tower of Laubholz and bridge to Laubholz are also gorgeous, but hell, even the random ass mines and the Ruins of Hahn look gorgeuos, visually speaking there's little this game didn't do right.
>And Cordelia is super cute
All of the Knights' women are top tier, but you still have to meet Diana and Ginny.
Again, don't sent Cody to the City of Night.

Minstrel Song is the slowest, usually on account of there being too many enemies with long animations

SF2 is about the same speed as SF during battles, though duels are a little bit slow.

I'd agree if you said the slow part of SF2 was watching the story scenes though.

I like the battle theme, but I don't know if I prefer it over SF1's Battle 1 yet. I might just need to adjust to it. Right from the opening scene I recognized part of the melody from https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ps16hyLkDeg, around 3:45 in. I listened to this album a lot ever since I started SF1.
While I like the battle music, I don't care for the victory fanfare -- but maybe it's the same, and I just need to adjust to it. I'm not too far in, there's still a lot more music for me to hear.

>>3441541
It might just be me, is all. It just feels like I select our actions, and then it takes forever for characters to actually start acting. And when they do, they move so slowly. The spear art "rush" feels more like a stroll.

So, in these threads, I'm frequently seeing people say that Frontier SaGa or RS3 is the ideal starting point for the series but I assumed that the ideal starting point would actually be Minstrel Song since that seems like only game in the series that has any semblance of a tutorial in the form of the Minstrel and those boys in each town that give you a Map and tell you about game mechanics as you get stronger.

I suppose I am just biased since it's my first SaGa game. I recently went through the hassle of digging out my old ps2 (which still fucking works after nearly of decade of owning it surprisingly) and I starting wondering "why would I play this again even though I've beaten it?" It's because now I feel like I'm only just now, in the early hours of my second playthrough, starting to really learn the game and how to make a good party and take advantage of its mechanics. I could go on about the all the things I love about this game but it's learning curve is a big draw for me and I always thought this game was only the tip of the iceberg for the series.

Not the anon you're replying to, but what they said makes SaGa Frontier a great game overall. It's quick, more merciful than a lot of the series, and fairly unique.

Also, consider Blue a tutorial playthrough of sorts, since you have a fast travel type option, and his entire plot hinges around completing the magic sidequests, thus meaning you'll have a good idea of how to do a lot of them after that run. Also, since his particular MC mechanics work as they do, you'll be quite powerful by the time you reach his final boss, so it's less stressful than Riki or Lute's scenarios.

Sorry for tl;dr, but it's one of my favorite games, and I can't stress how much it and FFL2/SaGa 2 on GB opened my mind to this series.

Yeah, Minstrel Song is probably slower than Frontier 2, also because of the terribly slow walking speed, but saying that Frontier 2 battles are fast as Frontier, that's a bit too much, see how much a Bear Crush takes in Frontier and Frontier 2, Frontier 2 is much slower when it comes to battles, even the combo activation signal takes longer than Frontier.
>>3441921
>Right from the opening scene I recognized part of the melody
That's right, Hamauzu played a lot on leitmotifs for Frontier 2, the Feldschlacht battle themes are all rearrangements of Feldschlacht I, Besessenheit, a particular Boss theme also rearranges the game's main theme, same with the final boss themes.
It's an interesting soundtrack because it's basically a huge exercise in styles, having a bunch of themes and rearranging them by changing sections, instruments, tempo or keys isn't as easy as it sounds and Hamauzu did a good job, though of course it's not nearly as varied as what Itoken did for Frontier.
>>3442619
Minstrel Song is way too complex for the average newcomer and incorporates too many mechanics you have to understand, ER is very unforgiving and can force you to start over again when you don't even know how much you've fucked up and why, you have to make sense of sparking and waza systems, combos, ecology, magic, forging, classes, field skills, weapon types and you also have to figure out quests and puzzle bosses like the Jewel Beast.
You're right on the tutorial part, but it's still a much more complex and unforgiving game than Frontier or RomaSaGa3, those two let you learn all the basic modern mechanics and general game structure without being as complex and potentially frustrating.

Not even close. Pretty much all he has is jewel blaster, which is a magic attack? You can pretty much survive with just good magic defense armor and second wind. Or even just use revive a lot.

Shirach, Death, Saruin, Corrupted Strom, even the 3 Minions fight are all probably harder. I think I even had more trouble with some of the Trials.

I also have to wonder what exactly your strategy was if you had to grind that much.

In hindsight, i probably didnt need to grind that much, i just hadnt figured out the strategy to beat him yet. However, due to my inexperience with the game, i surely had a poorly made party. I had swapped out party members often, i wasted jewels and money experimenting with classes and learning about blacksmiths, the difference between modes, missed a good handful of sidequests, etc.

I do feel like my 2nd playthrough is going much better but im still getting the hamg of it.

>> No.3444618

>Is he the strongest boss in the game or what?
No, but the awakened Jewel Beast is pretty much a puzzle fight due to being pattern based, if you can't figure out how to avoid or defend against Jewel Blast and kill it fast it can become quite problematic since Jewel Blast will be used more and more frequently as the battle progresses.
Normal Jewel Beast is much more simple, the challenge is to get there though since ER forces you to complete the quest at relatively low levels and if you can't figure out how to get there and getting strong enough to fight the pillar guardians AND kill the Jewel Beast before it awakens, well, you gotta learn to play the game better and git gud, it's the weakest of the special bosses in the game, Death and Shirach will push your shit much faster and harder than Jewel Beast.

If you want something really hard you should fight 10FS Saruin, him and the Full Powered Egg from US/EU Frontier 2 are nightmares, possibly worse than the Seven Heroes since at least you can cheese them with Quicktime if you have the patience to grind for hours.

You should, Death is much more troublesome mainly because he doesn't just rely on one strong move like Jewel Blast and then fart a few weak attacks in between.
I don't know how many people in here would agree with me on this, but I personally think that Death is also stronger than base Saruin, same with Schirach, mostly because Saruin only gets serious on the second phase while Death or Schirach already start the battle at full power and are basically second phase Saruin strong all around, the only thing Saruin has more than them is his pillar attack but it shouldn't really be a problem if you're fighting him normally.

It's actually easier than Frontier, you just really need to know what you're doing, eventually you'll be able to do it too once you have a better understanding of the system, the big part of the fun in SaGa is challenging yourself further and further and find out all the crazy stuff you can do like vortexing with one party member alone with to Overdrive, Phantom Warrior abuse and so on.
The game's system is much deeper than you'd think, if you like learning versatile and complex systems in games that don't fuck around and try to screw you all the time, SaGa is probably some of the best you can find.
>>3445654
Don't forget Schirach has Black Ice, melee isn't really the best choice unless you use indirect attacks like Grand Slam which is actually pretty great if you're Sif, but I'd rather spam Phoenix Arrow or Triple Star while abusing Phantom Warrior than potentially screwing up a duel by underestimating Black Ice, and Phoenix Arrow also heals me to boot so I'll always stay in my HP comfort zone.
Though I don't remember whether Shimmer Strike counts as a contact type, so I might be wrong on martial arts and you could just spam Shimmer Strike, avoid triggering Black Ice and lower her stats as well.

Well, even in the novel Leslie kinds of disappears after she and Gustave have a "lovey dovey" talk after the creation of Hahn Nova iirc, and after Gustave dies she lives in solitude for the rest of her life.

It's really a sad story, Gustave still can't get over his past and fears that Leslie and eventually their children could be harmed/killed like it happened with Philippe's son, Leslie wants to marry Gustave but can't bear seeing him brooding about his past and falling into his depression and shitty self esteem again, Gustave's side of the story is really depressing, then you have Ventarbre desperately try to save Johan from the Scorpion's poison, Nebelstern dying just when Gustave needs him the most, Philippe turning into a Dragon and so on, being The Steel is suffering.

But I guess that's one of the reasons I like the Frontier 2 cast so much, all the main characters are people struggling with their own lives first of all, Gustave never overcomes his inferiority complex and the ghosts of his past but manages to unite humanity through his deeds although posthumously, Wil lives to see the end of his personal fight against the Egg but has to deal with the death of his family members and close friends, a huge price for saving the world, I like that there's no real happy end for both of the original protagonists, as much as it's sad, not many games manage to keep a tragic tone without either being gratuitous or sneaking in a happy end at the last moment.

To this day I still don't know who I like more, Wil the gifted bumpkin who becomes Tycoon Wil and still kicks ass at 80+ years and secretly fights to save mankind or Gustave, the fallen noble turned pariah who becomes the most revolutionary figure of his time through sheer determination.

The Last Remnant is basically not called a SaGa game even though it's made by SaGa developers and has SaGa arts and spells in it, and SaGa game mechanics, and is filled with references to earlier SaGa games.

It's plot is utterly generic and inoffensive, I wouldn't really call it bad or good. At the very least it's not like it's blatantly stupid or anything.

There are some design decisions that are blatantly misleading or frustrating to the average gamer, but it's basically tolerable if you already like SaGa. Literally everything but the title down to spells, weapons, formation and waza names and effects.
Go play it, it's great stuff, it also has a few references to the old SaGa games, The Seven themselves are a pretty evident reference to the Seven Heroes, especially when you fight them as the Enlightened Seven, it's pretty much a reenactment of the Seven Heroes final battle down to the battle design.

Sad thing is that it was literally the only quest I missed the entire playthrough.

just smhtbqhwtyf

I worked out a replacement set up using Pyramid, Dragontail, and two Flame unions.

The most frustrating thing about this playthrough is that I accidentally erased a certain specific rare monster that was necessary to rank up in one of the guilds, by getting in a fight at like some exact frame specific distance from it with two other monsters without actually getting it included in the zone, but still erasing it's spawn. Because of that there are like, 4 or 5 valuable magazines I can't get until the next playthrough

it's maddening

I honestly wouldn't even care about the Queen of Swords past the early game - it's just a stat stick that gives you some Status resistance (IIRC)

Her current stats don't really matter - they're always grindable.

I kind of want to say Castle Knight if you don't care about the Jewel Discount since I don't think it shares any skills with her starting class.

Everything had been going so well up till now. I I dont remember this fight being so tough. His Meat Shields deal more than half of a character's health per hit and his Shockwave devastates any attempts at recovery. I'm just gonna have to reload an old save like a huge coward and come back later.

Well, just finished my T260G solo run, clocked in 5:32 right before Genocide Heart, could have had at least one or two hours less if I didn't stubbornly grind for Satellite Linker who turned out to be not good at all for solo and fucked around doing half assed magic quests and killing bosses like Furdo or the Earth Dragon for fun.

It was fun figuring out how to solo all those bosses like Big Diggers and MechGod, I almost gave up fighting MechGod alone because it seemed completely impossible but I had a last moment epiphany that helped me push through its MagneticStorm spam unscathed, I guess I was lucky that Genocide Heart didn't Virtual Shift into the world with MagneticStorm, otherwise I would have been toast, that's the only thing that could do more than 10 points of damage to T260G and almost kill me instantly but let me tell you, I'll never, ever do this quest Solo again for the very first boss fight in the craters, there's no strategy for that fight other than praying.

I learned quite a few interesting things though, namely that Self Repair is affected by VIT, Magnify is GREAT for 90% of the game if you solo, Jammer is invaluable and that Warlord Armors are way better than PoweredSuits for soloing T260G quest.
BigDiggers were a tough puzzle since I was fighting them with Body Type 2 but I managed to find a sweet safe spot to kill them, I ended up not using TigerRampage at all though, too expensive.

Time to go back to Blue I guess.

Don't even bother fighting Ewei if you don't have Shield Breaker, he's not an easy boss and that spell is your key to victory.

Well, if that's the biggest problem you're having then you should just forge something with high magic resistance, keep in mind that Ewei has two priorities, keeping Aegis up and having two meat shields up, when both of this factors are present he'll go on the offensive and it's almost inevitable you won't eat at least one Shockwave once in a while, pick your party members roles in battle carefully and equip them to meet your own priorities depending on how you want to fight.

I don't remember his meatshields being dangerous in terms of attacks honestly, maybe I was playing in Defence mode or something, I was more worried about Ewei nuking me but then again, Shield Breaker already solves that problem.

>get Cachexia and use Cachexia every single turn
because I will JUST

>> No.3452214

>>3451372
Yeah Cachexia is pretty OP, it's basically a reverse Overdrive in a way so it's only natural most bosses will get fucked by that, I don't think it stops The Fallen from healing itself though, it's been more than five years since I last played TLR, I do remember it doesn't stop Armageddon at all though, but hey, considering it does stop most of its other arts it's still a net gain, unless Hand of God kills your union with the Cachexia user, it's kind of a crutch really, it can easily spoil you and can fuck you over if you rely too much on it since a few bosses have arts that aren't affected by it and people tend to focus to much on it and forget that other stuff is perfectly viable.

It's still a pretty high tier art and it's not that easy to learn compared to most stuff unless you grind like hell, iirc you can almost completely lockdown The Conqueror with it, unless he uses TaoTie, I don't think Cachexia can stop that.

It's a bit like RomaSaGa2 Quicktime, it can help you cheese bosses, but you have to grind a lot, it costs a lot and when you run out or lose access to it you're in for a tough ride.

>> No.3452298

>>3452214
The thing with the Fallen, or rather, not the Fallen, but the Lost and Demigod, is that you apparently have to use Cachexia or you will be so busy healing and fixing the morale gauge that you don't have time to be doing damage every turn.

You can grind until you get the classes that block instant death, or you can grind until one healer carries each team and hope that healer never dies, or you can grind until you get Cachexia, or you can grind until you reach the Lost's base battle rank of fucking 200.

Regardless of your choice the answer is grinding.

I've heard that White Conquerer has some bullshit attacks that will fuck entire unions or all your unions if you don't Cachexia him constantly.

As is I said fuck grinding twice and already started hard mode, and I'm now in the desert at Battle Rank 2 grinding Grand Beetles with Mystic Seal on playing some sort of pseudo low level game so I don't have to start training until I get all my characters.

Minstrel Song is really goofy. It takes itself so seriously but it also really doesnt. Here you have this majestic, awesome Serpent hovering a sacrificial maiden and when you come to take the girl, he refuses, even when you offer him the ring back. He basically goes "W-Wait, this is my new waifu, you can't just take her like that! I let my friend borrow my toy, go get it back for me." He's technically the one who's more in contact with humans, having a temple built for him and all that, Tuman making all that mess also indicates that he's dealing with humans pretty frequently.
And yeah, the four elemental lords all have their own quirks, Flame Tyrant is the nicest one but he's paranoid to the point of making you destroy a fabled weapon that it lately turns out is mass produced in Ettinham anyway, Kyllis is eternally menstruated, TinyFeather is a snob asshole and Water Dragon is a well intentioned but cranky old fuck, no wonder though, after all they were created by Saruin.

The Seven Heroes, The Egg and other villains like MetalBlack do get development, even Death and Schirach do to some extent, but it's all in the minimalistic style of SaGa.
It really depends on what kind of narrative you like, SaGa is more focused on making characters focused on few defining traits instead of mishmashes like Final Fantasy, the villains are the same.
One other thing that SaGa often does with its villains is giving them indirect screentime or development, Saruin for instance doesn't really get any lines but his end monologue, but you know he was the most evil of the Evil Gods, he created the four elemental lords, he used the Obsidian Swords and so on, what happens is that once you do get to him he fits the in game mythos to a tee, to the point that you can even see how he wielded the Obsidian Sword with your own eyes if you give it to him.
Most RPGs prefer to give villains a lot of screentime and a lot of dialogue, but the actual impact of the villain itself varies a lot depending on how much you empathise with it, SaGa tends to give you a lot of rumours and lore that you end up verifying for yourself.
There are villains such as Mondo, Yun Crimsonrain, Jeanne and Butcher who do get more screentime than average, those are more similar to classic villains in a way, though of course they still have the SaGa touches, Mondo appears directly in two stories and indirectly in all the rest as part of Trinity, Butcher gets more screentime if you play as Hawk and the Unlimited villains are more present than usual in their game.
In the end it all comes down to the narrative style you like I guess, I too prefer SaGa villains, I feel they end up having more impact, except for stuff like the Destroyer which is more or less a Zemus asspull, though I love Arsenal/Last Defense System to death and it's exactly that.

>>3457869
I'd say Hawke or Sif since they're very strong characters, Hawke himself doesn't have that much of a quest so you don't have to worry about extra work, Sif can get her hands on what is possibly the best accessory in the game bar none, she's hella strong, and a real fun character if you like what is basically female Conan the Barbarian, plus, she's voiced by the same VA who voiced Lenneth if you're playing the English version, and she does a very good job at it.
I wouldn't suggest playing as Grey first because his own quest is very frustrating if you don't know where to get the Mullock(7), but you can always read a guide for that and hope for the best since it's pretty much RNG based.
>>3457880
Well, from my experience, most people who like SaGa characters and stories tend to like it for such reasons, because it's very dry and on point narrative.
There's rarely long cutscenes of characters having dramatic monologues or lots of internal conflicts like other games, when there are such things they're always very down to earth and direct, even characters who undergo some great change in their personality don't do that.
Take Theodore, at first he stubbornly wants to condemn Raphael to death because of his own view on what is a knight and honour, but then, when you finish a quest in which neither have anything but a "don't die-you too" dialogue, he changes his idea of honour and finds some new meaning in knighthood by fighting with Raphael and your character, if this was FF you would have had at least three cutscenes showing Theodore progressively changing his point of view, which isn't necessarily bad mind you, but for some people it's simply too much.

>> No.3458721

>>3458720

Then you have the lore and background narrative which always ends up talking about the world more than cutscenes will ever do, by travelling around Mardias you'll hear many legends which all turn out to be true to an extent when you see those legends yourself, and you also have some extra stuff sometimes like the story of Rosa Neimann and the Crystal Lake, RomaSaGa 2 gives you many visual and audio clues especially when you enter the various ruins in Austoroth, Terelutva or Eilunepp so if you pay attention to the decorations and music everything will come together the moment you enter the village of the ancients without even needing anything else, you'll immediately understand why Wagnas was so obsessed with the ruins to a certain degree because it's all a matter of connecting the dots instead of reading dialogue, same happens in Frontier for a lot of different things, from finding Annie's sister to Mondo's story.
Of course there are things that are a bit rushed, the Destroyer comes out of nowhere though I guess they did need to find something that could explain how the eclipse worked in a way, Arsenal/LDS makes a bit more sense since it explicitly ties to Apollo abusing the power of the relics to the point of creating anomalies in the multiverse's balance to the point that it activates this mysterious multiverse control bot, and twin gigantic sentry mechs of mass destruction in a universe with giants, petty gods fairies and robots are way more badass than a huge demon, and they even gave them a Gattai in the remake...
Cut content like Furdo doesn't make much sense besides giving an area more charm, the region of Nelson also doesn't really stand out and if it weren't for the gold exchange trick nobody would go there and they did put another gold exchange counter in there specifically because Nelson didn't have anything going for it once they cut what little content that region already had.

>> No.3458725

>>3458721
Lastly, this is my last post I promise, what I think SaGa does differently from most other RPG series is a completely different approach to world building, mainly because it's more of a simulation RPG like Metal Max or Lunatic Dawn than a normal RPG.
What I think SaGa does in this respect is creating a world with its lore and story and then put some characters with their own story and motivations inside it opposed to other games like FF, SMT, PS or the likes that first create characters with their own story and then build a world around them, that's probably what attracts people to its narrative.
In SaGa you barely had stories that involve chosen ones besides SaGa 3, RomaSaGa 2 and to an extent Frontier 2, nobody in Mardias has really anything to do with Saruin, same in RomaSaGa 3 save Sara and Shonen, Frontier doesn't have a special final boss, every character has its own beef with someone else, similarly, Unlimited pulls Chaos on you only after you've defeated a personal boss and most characters don't really care about Chaos once they get to it, even less than Saruin who at least gets some respect from people like Galahad who feel honoured to fight against the legendary evil god, Chaos is a bonus, a lore element meant to legitimate the bad guys' own quests, Basil Galeos triggers Chaos with his greed and ambition, Yun triggers him by being a stubborn old fool and so on.
That in my opinion creates a more interesting world and set of characters, you're not playing as a special snowflake with a unique troubled past destined to be the greatest hero on the planet, you're simply minding your own business most of the times, in a way its more relatable and makes characters more genuine, I can relate more to someone like Harid or Wendy than someone like Aleph or Zidane, they might not be as "epic" or "complex" but for me they're way more human and sympathetic than a synthetic messiah or a super saiyan angel of death.

holy shit nigger do you even ubermensch? I don't get my ideas from any place I take all the knowledge that's available to me and make my own ideas in even handed consideration of it

even in a deterministic universe where all my thoughts and actions are the sum result of the universe which birthed me, so too are all the potentialities of that universe apart from me deterministic and therefor influenced in their entirety by the decisions I make.

that's even if this were a deterministic universe, and not one where all potentialities exist simultaneously until the passage of time strips them down to a single route, and I don't know about you but personally I would rather dig at the soil with my bare hands and change the course of the river rather than be swept along with it like a retarded fish or mindless grain of sand

Blue might not be bad, since it forces you to do some of the optional magic quests you would have to do anyway, and Blue himself just ends up ridiculously strong in his own scenario. But since it gives you pretty free rein on where you can go, it can be a little more confusing than scenarios that are a little more story-based. There is almost no story in his path, which I guess wouldn't be as much of a problem in a first playthrough since the shared quest stuff is still new.

He also literally has no ending, with the screen going grey when you land the last hit on his end boss, which pissed me off personally but might be fine with others if they knew what to expect.

>>3459541
If you two are really this bored, maybe you should find another game to talk about.

The only other thing I can think of about his scenario is that I think it tells you to hurry to beat his rival, but that ends up being total bullshit and you are better off being as strong as possible when you reach Rouge since it makes you even stronger afterwards.

Blue's strong at the end of the game (though really, Lute is the only real bad MC and he has the special power of being able to be put in the back squad. I know someone is going to say Riki but Monsters are basically interchangable in terms of power level), he has a special item called the RegionMap which teleports you to any town you visited which is such a nice "quality of life" thing and the required quests you need to perform in his quest are the Magic quests that are optional in other character's stories.

Which is nice because you get them out of the way early and then later on when you're playing other characters you can be all "Hmm, maybe I'll skip the magic quests this time" instead of doing Blue last after you already played 6 characters and fully completing them every time because apparently some people do that.

But seriously, you're making it sound like it's too hard, missing a few beginning quests as Hawke isn't so bad considering he's a very strong character on his own and getting to the mainland early should be easy, same with Sif, Valhalland Monsters is piss easy as long as you buy equipment before doing it.
If you think that's too hard then Barbara is the best character for beginners because she doesn't have a quest and conveniently starts in the Frontier so it's almost impossible to miss any quest with her, but she doesn't have Hawke or Sif's stats or gimmicks besides very large regeneration bonuses and she starts with Herman instead of Guella or Albert, in a way Barbara needs more effort in the beginning of the game while Hawke and Sif are carried by their superior stats and starting classes.

There's a number of ways to get around that though.
He's like Aunas, or rather, Aunas is like him, but he's also powerless against the Ice Sword, use the same strategy you would use against the Ifrit or normal Pyrix/Flame Tyrant, if you want to cheese him just wait until you get to Ettinham, buy Ice Swords for everyone and fuck him up, you'll need lots of money though.
Otherwise play smart, use magic, bows and indirect attacks such as Triple Star so that you won't ever trigger Self Burning.
If everything else fails, just use Overdrive.

It's not that it's too hard, it's that its inconvenient and irritating and makes it seem like the game is a giant slog where you fight dozens of random battles to go literally anywhere (you're not supposed to do this even though that's how it usually turns out anyway)

I also said to play Jamil or Claudia who start out with a reasonable amount of combat and get good introductory quests in the city where it's more about investigating and finding events, with combat only being the end result of the activity. This teaches better habits since it shows you that actually accomplishing objectives is how you get shit done and earn money and jewels, instead of something as misleading and cliched as the sequence of "subjugate monsters!" (the very next quest you'll hit after valhalland monsters is pride of knights in all likelihood) quests that will happen if you pick Albert or Sif.

It's also somewhat obvious that Hawke/Gray/Sif are more experienced adventurers and are meant to be played when you're more experienced at either this game or SaGa in general.

When you already believe the game is good and are invested enough for more than 1 replays, this is tolerable, for a newbie, I rather point to something more like Claudia.

closer to 200 hours really, it shouldn't take much longer than 25 hours for most characters, like 30-35 maybe if you want to beat death, schirach, the four corrupted lords and 10FS saruin for some reason.

you get some fun little scene thingy if you beat it with every character

mostly if you want to see all the actual gameplay content you'll probably have to beat it like 3-5 times. 3 is the minimum even with optimal routes.

I personally find the game relaxing, it's kind of nice just to replay and clear it again for no reason sometimes, whether you're starting over from 0 or doing new game+

Really?
I'd say the one who's meant to be played as such is Aisha, since she's by far the weakest MC, her early game is pretty much hard mode since you must get a party ASAP and even so she's so frail you have to keep an eye on her all the time.
I agree that Grey can fuck you over big time early on if you don't know what to expect while looking for the Demonbrand in the tunnels, and the whole forging quest is such a pain if you don't know where to look for the items you need, especially when you find out most of them periodically appear in shops.
>>3462093
>why the hell do they make you clear out the caves TWICE?
That's a good question, it does help to build out Albert but you gotta say goodbye to the some early quests if you do so.
I guess it sort of evens out with her own quest later since the Dragon Orb is that good.
Even so, Romancing SaGa character quests are a bit meh compared to Frontier/Unlimited, they did spice up things a bit with Darque/Aldora and Friere but most of the characters' unique quests are pretty boring, Jamil's quest is fine but you can play half of it in every quest already, same with Hawke/Claudia, Aisha's so so, at least it spawned a great parody on Pixiv, Sif is decent I guess, Barbara is basically Lute and Grey's quest is forging a sword, in the end only Albert has a quest to speak of, RomaSaGa 3 didn't really get much better, Julian and Monica kind of share the same quest, Katarina's quest is kinda there, Ellen doesn't even have a personal quest, Thomas' quest is a minigame everyone has access to and Sara's quest is rescuing Shonen(?), only Harid and Mikhael end up having some truly unique content, and it's still not that much.

I don't really care that much, but when you think about it there's not much to look forward in terms of character quests when you replay those games.

You know it wasn't even intentional?

Jamil picks up Barbara almost automatically, it's what you're supposed to do right before Dowd leaves your party (which I allowed to happen for the extra scenes), and she's great so I just kept her. Then I got Claudia just because I grab Gray and her at the start to open up areas, and she sparked Id Break while I was clearing out the Saruin cult in Melvir and one-shot'd the boss so I was pretty much solid right there.

Sif on the other hand is just my favorite character in this game and I almost always get her for the Valhalland quests when I need to raise ER, and the last slot goes to quest NPCs and dragon knight

I actually felt bad because it's one of the only playthroughs where I won't keep Guella Ha for the entire game.

I also wish that Herman kept his Satoshi Kon design rather than that cartoony new redesign, him and Farah are pretty appalling in Minstrel Song compared to their original designs. Though I was pretty surprised to see that Galahage has a mild fanbase in Japan, he's one of those characters that got more appreciation only due to his redesign.

He's not really wrong, Aisha's quest is pretty risky for beginners who don't know where to go and what to do, she's weaker than any other MC and starts with no one to keep her company in a region where it's pretty easy to end up getting involved into quests, and even with companions she's pretty much a deadweight until she at least catches up with any other party member.
Sure, once you know what to do it's not a problem, but if I had begun with Aisha back when I was new to MS I'd probably had a very hard time compared to people like Sif or Gray.

There is no true permadeath in Minstrel Song, though the game does permanently lock you out of some characters if they die or you sacrifice them to Death, Frielei/Friere for instance, but then again Friere also won't join you later if you don't make her a party member after doing her quest.
The true "permadeath" condition, as in characters not reappearing in their spawning points, is only for a few specific cases like killing Galahad for the Ice Sword or sacrificing someone to Death for equipment, and then again you can ask Death to revive them.
The only games with permadeath in the series are the very first SaGa and to an extent RomaSaGa 2, since generics do die but you can eventually recruit them again since the list cycles through all units.

Trials of Elore is a rather long boss rush, you better be careful, once you enter it there's no turning back, some bosses can also slap your shit in the long run if you're unprepared, see Amul Amut and the likes, it's a test of versatility and how much you know about the game.
>>3468068
>should I be strong enough to defeat Saruin?
It's a different kind of fight.
Bosses in Trials of Elore aren't too tough taken one by one, it is however rather taxing as you must fight a lot of them with no break, Saruin is completely different.
First of all he has tricks such as animate dead or his parry that no enemy in ToE has, he has more HP, gets more consecutive actions and his second phase also has the pillar gimmick.
ToE is more about being versatile as you fight bosses with different strengths and weaknesses, so it tests your knowledge of the game by pitting you against many different opponents, Saruin has a much tighter pace and relies on building a superior strategy/abusing the combo system to win, especially during its second phase.

That's pretty much the entire purpose of the ToE, to see if you've been paying attention, there's nothing unique to it, it's basically a long catalog of boss fights who also happen to use other bosses' gimmicks and strategies. Also, since you've passed Amul Amut I doubt anything else will surprise you at this point, the cat is usually what makes or breaks the run since it's the only boss that can take you unprepared as it relies on strategy rather than just stats.
>She rarely ever gets killed and has crazy good defense.
That's because she's a Dragonite, she also has pretty good stats but her class is what seals the deal, she's still pretty frail though, never use her against 10 FS Saruin, or Death if you don't have a certain accessory and/or you don't know how to fight it.

And that's all of the Dark Elemntal Lords down. In order from the easiest to hardest:
Gigavi < Slask < Kyllis < Pyrocanis

Kyllis is only hard at the start because she has, like, 7 extra heads that spit out small damage and poison that you need to kill, but after you start killing off the heads, the battle is won.

Pyrocanis is the hardest because of his constantly regenerating shield that shuts down your best damaging physical attacks without taking an extra step to do something about it which is a sub-optimal outcome but its what you gotta do. It's also because he has the ability to attack multiple times right off the bat and he attacks with paralysis multiple times a turn. He's the only one I really struggled with but to be fair, he was also the first and I was an ER rank lower than when i fought the others.

Good job on defeating the corrupted elemental lords, also, I'm not sure how familiar you are with the series but their weapons have subtle/not so subtle references to other SaGa bosses in case you haven't noticed, perhaps the most evident one is the Cosmic Egg weapon, which references Frontier 2's last boss.
If you feel confident you can give Saruin a few Fatestones, but maybe you might want to save it after you deal with Death and Schirach, Saruin with certain Fatestones might be a tad too much to deal with in a casual run.

Yeah, giving Saruin any fatestones is more effort than im willing to put in because, for now, i fight him because i want to move on to the next playthrough. Improved Saruin and his 10FS version is the last thing i plan to do with the game eventually. That wont be for awhile.

get over 10000 at the start of the game just by selling the fixed dinosaur eggs and avi's feather.

you can even get more eggs that are worth like 5-7k each if you can count your battles and get them like 7 different times for an absurd amount of cash. theres no way to know that without a guide though.

getting to the top of mt scurve is easy, and getting the first batch of dinosaur eggs takes nothing other than lurk, even level 1 is probably good enough to avoid dinos

avi's feather is a worthless hat too, there's no reason to keep it

Aw ye, I beat the video game as Hawke. I love this ending; this time I beat Saruin in my first attempt too, as opposed to the many times I died to to him during my first playthrough. Goes to show that I've really come a long way. I ultimately clocked in at 45 hours and 33 minutes, compared to my first run of 69:10. maybe my third playthrough will go faster since I likely will not go for the ecology or dark lords next time. I suppose I'm going to play as Barbera next and i'm going to try and save the frontier and beat the jewel beast.

Before that however, I'm actually finally going to play SaGa Frontier. I've been holding it off until i was done with this playthrough and now it is time to see for myself if I'll love it as much as I love Minstrel Song. I suppose Red seems like a good character to start with...

Good, as you see the more you play the games the better you get, it's pretty cool to see how much you can learn, SaGa is a very rewarding series if you take the time to learn all the tricks.
>I'm actually finally going to play SaGa Frontier.
So many people playing Frontier lately, damn Kawazu, what are you waiting for? Give us a proper Frontier Remake already, that shit would print money.
> I suppose Red seems like a good character to start with...
As a part of the MC Monster Trio Red is very good, but he has a gimmick you shouldn't abuse and he often has parts of his own quest that can be tricky to solve or unexpected, especially the early Cygnus section against the Region Pirates, in that sense, Blue is better since you can freely roam around without weird quest triggers.
All the rest is normal SaGa progression, if you like Sentai/Toku Red is great because it follows all the major tropes of the genres, if you can't stand the over the top silliness, you probably won't enjoy it as much, but Frontier as a whole is extremely over the top in anything it does.
A few pointers, Frontier goes back to the GB SaGa races, that means you have four different races that all develop differently and have access to different abilities, you'll have to learn how to handle those, lastly, all characters have their own boss unlike MS which redirects everyone to Saruin, there's no big bad in Frontier but rather, many different stories.
Also, the localized script is very dry unfortunately and there's many translation errors, not like MS was perfect, but Frontier is definitely worse.

>How bad?
All characters lose a great deal of character, especially people like Fuse, Lute, Leonard, Gen and the whole Gradius team, Minstrel Song at least managed to convey more through voice acting, sometimes not in a good way, but Frontier doesn't have such luxury.
They also changed a few names, Emilia became Emelia and Zeke's name was completely different, but the same happened with MS calling Flamme and Friere Flammard and Frielei for instance.
Some characters' parts of the dialogues are also completely omitted, which makes routes such as Asellus' or T260G's much more dry, iirc they also removed the comments by the Nakajima engineers on Zeke during the banter they had for its introduction, but I might be wrong on this, it's been years since I've played Frontier in english, another example that comes to mind is the in battle dialogue with Shuzer in Red's scenario but I'd need to spoiler you his route to explain that so I'll do that after you play it.
>Im also curious about this "monstet trio".
The monster trio is made up by Asellus, Red and Blue.
They're called like that by fans because they're mechanically broken characters due to their own gimmicks, Red can Henshin in a form which gives him tremendous stat boosts, though there's a catch to it, Asellus has a similar henshin mechanic since she's a half mystic, meaning she grows as a human, can learn human techs and also has full access to all the mystics benefits by turning into half mystic, that is stat boosts and eventual Mystic moveset(though the ending will also change depending on it), Blue is the only character that can learn every spell in the game bar unique schools like Zozma's or Rei's, but having access to Overdrive, Stasis Rune and Tower on the same character obliterates everything forever.
T260G can also compete but almost every mech can become just as broken and mechs still don't have access to something like Overdrive, T260G is virtually invulnerable to anything but MagneticStorm though.

Fuse scenario is totally not there but assets from it exist to find in the world, like the organization he is a part of is a place you can travel to but there's not really anything you can do there and definately nothing to fight or find.
Lute's scenario only has two events unique to him and one of them triggers his final dungeon.
Certain characters have multiple endings and everyone else has one.
Half of the characters just have some really weird ways their stories sort of end up reaching their conclusion, not gonna spoil anything but the particulars of Riki's lead up to the ending feel half hearted, especially in terms of the antagonist.
Blue's scenario you need to read the guide for it to understand just what the fuck that ending was, it will make you mad once you find out.

There's characters that you can recruit that should have much larger backstories to them than are actually presented, like the one mystic doctor who clearly has some kind of past and want to join up with a certain main character but none it will ever be explained.

It's just there was too much for them to add before the chopping block came down.

Didn't have enough funds, stopped making content where they were, made sure it could pass as a game.
For Frontier 2 it's more difficult to tell because the game as a whole is very fragmented, but they definitely had more scenarios planned and ran out of budget. At least I can see a game like that running out of budget, considering everything is drawn.
Xenogears is from around the same time period, and also ran out of budget (again, I can see this happening) and as a result disc 2 is... well, a lot like a linear Frontier 2 actually. You walk in a small area, do a boss fight, cutscenes that seem like a visual novel, rinse and repeat until you're at endgame and free to do whatever you want. Considering FFVIII's final disc, I have the suspicion they might have run out of budget there, too. I think Square had a serious problem with budgets in the PS1 era, but they were funding so many games that maybe there's that. Apart from Final Fantasy, there was Tobal 1 and 2, Tactics Ogre, Racing Lagoon, Parasite Eve 1 and 2, Bushido Blade 1 and 2, Einhander, Ehrgeiz, Legend of Mana, Soukaigi, just to name what's on top of my mind.

In a PvP scenario, yeah, mechs beat the shit out of anything else because they're basically immortal and hit just as hard as humans, but then a fast monster with Magnetic Storm walks all over them.
Game wise though, mechs don't have access to ultra broken stuff like magic, and especially T260G can't afford to just spam mostly one strategy and win if you solo, which is what happens in other runs, unlike Red or Asellus that can rely on magic and superior WP pools T260G is forced to gauge a meager 50 WP for boss fights, and what my solo playthrough taught me is that no matter how much armor you pile over your mech, a 2 men combo from the right monsters or a MagneticStorm and you're dead just like everything else, on that matter humans at least don't have a tremendous weakness so even if you don't survive a combo there's nothing that can kill you in one hit unless you go up against a quest boss.
On a slightly unrelated note, I REALLY like how Imperial handles character PvP, if the races worked like the mainline SaGa it would be pretty addicting, now that they also added equipment the game really shifted to PvP more than anything, it has a few pretty good concepts for a web browser game, some of those would be pretty cool for a mainline game actually, like giving the option to power up magic or waza in terms of power or accuracy, character PvP mechanics and the reinforcement concept, which is similar to what happens during the Maximus fight in RomaSaGa 3.

if you change your skills it changes the balance, if you have 6 jutsu or 6 waza and none of the other it turns into a crown, and all jutsu or all waza will have a 1 point cheaper cost to use (which actually makes them weaker but also more efficient), and you'll have an increased chance to learn techniques of the associated type.

oh about battle position, usually characters at the top of the list are most likely to get attacked and ones at the bottom are least likely.

your formation is predetermined for you so sometimes there's a back row and sometimes there isn't.

as for being set forward or back before battle, being forward does more damage with fist and sword techs unless they're ranged. defending or getting hit with an attack that pushes you back, or just starting in defensive position before the battle starts, will reduce both the damage you take and the damage you do with melee techniques.

Depends on your loadout, there are monsters that are faster than mechs that don't have maximized speed and iirc some monster forms like Dullahan or Mariche are very fast, Though I guess that if you load a mech for maximum speed and slap some high end gun there's nothing that could really touch them.
>>3474857
>except for status effects
There's equipment for that, characters like Red can gain natural immunity to almost anything, there's evasion waza for things like Eye attacks and by the time you reach around 50 stats it's really hard for most enemies to even get a hit in, unless it's something like a Black Dragon and in that case you'll have other worries than status effects.
What makes mechs much more superior than humans besides their general status immunity is piling up three pieces of body armor, there's literally nothing but Magnetic Storm that can hope to even scratch you if you put on three wargod armors with a self repair program, bonus points if you can boost VIT further with something else so Self Repair is even more effective, only attacks tailored against mechs work, and even then, Gremlin Touch will do at best 300 damage, you really only need to worry about Magnetic Storm and there's ways to get around that too, even if you solo as T260G, unless for some unknown reason you decide to fight the Abyss Bat, that's the only boss that Mechs should fear, but it's optional so whatever.

Onto more important news in case someone didn't know:

I don't honestly know, the only thing we know is that the battles have five characters and Kawazu said sparking will somehow play a lesser role, but this was something he said more than a year ago, who knows whether he changed his mind or not, we'll just have to wait and see.
Also, the one who's really into commander mode as a concept was Hiroshi Takai, he was the one who came up with the idea for RomaSaGa 3 and later on designed the whole game system for The Last Remnant, I don't know how much Kawazu likes the idea or wants to mess with it, he did mention it while talking about an eventual RomaSaGa 3 remaster/remake as one of the things he'd like to work on, so maybe there's a possibility he has implemented it in Scarlet Grace in some form, I wouldn't mind at all.
Though considering Kawazu is listed as scenario writer and designer this time and they got Ichikawa as producer I don't think anyone can make clear predictions, you know something's up when Kawazu himself leaves his producer seat to personally design the game, the last surprise was Unlimited, I don't know if he'll pull out something as strange, but considering the team is made up by key people of the series I'd say this one's gonna probably stay a bit more "traditional".

Whew! Thank goodness for the simplicity of this game. Modern rpgs insistence on making black and white scenarios morally grey gets really draining after awhile

If this was Nier, the monster would have been a former parent who lost its own child at some point and it kidnapped the boy because he reminded it of being a parent. Don't ever play Frontier 2 then.
It will probably make you feel doubly bad since there's quite a few important characters who turn into monster that you'll have to put down, some of which are also former playable characters from your old parties, family members etc.

SaGa in general has a different concept of monsters compared to most RPGs though, starting from SaGa all the way to Unlimited, monsters are another part of the living beings of the SaGa worlds, some are friendly and are integral parts of societies, like in the SaGa trilogy or Frontier, some are just aggressive "beasts", same thing with humans.
After all, Guella counts as a monster too, doubly so since Gekkos/Gecklings were creatures of Saruin created to ravage the world, same with the Elemental Lords.
The Romancing trilogy has friendly monsters, see Guella, the four monster tribes in 2 or Boston, Yousei and Yukidaruma from 3, but unlike the GB SaGa, Frontier or Unlimited they live in separate societies, actually, Unlimited is a mix of the two cases, monsters usually live separately from humans in their own villages and tribes like the Anubito but they generally integrate well with humans and most races are on friendly terms with each other, though of course there are some bad guys on both sides, like Dagul Bos or Basil Galeos.

RS2 is the only video game I have ever dropped as a result of feeling like it wasn't possible for me to beat it. I probably put a good 25 or so hours into it before I decided that it just wasn't gonna happen. If you go in blind, be prepared to completely restart the game again and again. I never thought a JRPG could fuck me this hard. Every time I open my phone, its icon is there, taunting me, and sometimes I'll open it up, play for a bit, shake my head, and go back to something more casual. You've picked the second worst game in the series for newcomers.
I went in blind after playing every other title in the series and I stil had to restart it four or five times to even get to the last boss because I kept messing up quests, missing quests, I didn't know where to look for items, didn't get magic and so on, and when I got to the last boss I had to restart it again because I couldn't even get to the second phase before getting BTFO(and when I got to the second phase later I had to restart it again because it was even more brutal)

It's my favorite game in the series and all, but it's brutal even if you're accustomed to the franchise.
So unless you're one of those guys who revel in punishing games I don't know whether you like it, it's pretty brutal and requires you to know what you're doing since the moment you start the game.
I wouldn't tell you to use a guide, at least not on your first playthrough, because the game is basically a sim-rpg, most of the fun comes from sequence breaking, experimenting with classes, finding quest triggers and dungeons, seeing different questlines and long and short term planning.
90% of the bosses will rape you, story bosses also get stronger, as in get different, vastly more powerful forms depending on how you proceed in the game, if you grind some of them will get more powerful, if you make certain choices during quests you'll have to fight them in very different conditions, as in almost no equipment at all and/or in more powerful forms and so on.
Then you'll have to deal with character permadeath, getting magic, getting waza, getting items, avoid enemies since every battle raises the BR which in turn makes all enemies stronger faster than you and so on, it's a great game if you like deep, non linear RPGs, but you need to know how it works, discovering it by yourself is a great experience, but it can be tremendously frustrating.

>I'm not sure if having played any of the other games makes playing Unlimited any easier.
I totally agree, Unlimited is on the same level, nothing prepares you for Unlimited because it's a departure from normal videogame RPGs mechanic.
Even so, I did play Unlimited before RomaSaGa 2 and I still got my ass handed to me even though it's not nearly as exotic as Unlimited.
And while Unlimited has a few safe spots for "grinding" during the game when you enter one of the Seven Wonders, RomaSaGa 2 doesn't even have that, the only part of the game that you can abuse is the Sentinel in Eilunep, and even then it only lets you spark waza and still raises your BR, Unlimited fucks you over because of its complexity and weird mechanics, as one anon here put it, it's like a mysterious dungeon mistress that will whip you and kick you in the balls if you can't understand what she's asking of you, but RomaSaGa 2 is just the equivalent of hardcore masochism as in having your dungeon mistress repeatedly crushing your balls with a stiletto heel without notice, its ruthlessness was legendary.

And most people get misleaded because they look at videos on youtube and see people with maxed stats( though you can't see the hours they put on grinding all of those) casting spells that have no visible explanation of what they do, characters doing pirouettes and fancy attacks that again, don't show all the effects behind them.
Same with Unlimited, even worse since most people can't understand reels and all the work that you have to put in panels, smithing, exploring and so on, they're just games that are by large incompatible with anything else in the genre, same exact thing happened with TLR.

Honestly, the one thing that would have made unlimited go from unsufferable to managable for me is if they simply let you either outright discard or have an inventory for the tiles, like if you just had tiles tossed into the inventory after a quest that would have been fantastic, or some sort of pocket inventory for specific character, even if you couldn't pull a tile back out of the level grid and the only way to remove one was still just to replace it and it was gone forever, it would be a hell of a lot better than trying to pray that RNG doesn't fuck you over when you have a full grid and are given a tile for a character that you can't refuse but is also going to break the build you were trying to go for and make the character weaker overall. The idea that you could do everything "Right" and the game can still fuck you in the ass by making several characters in your party useless by end game is a fucking nightmare to me.

PC version has some tweaks that make it better, and can be modded (there are some utility mods around that make some stuff like equipment management make a bit more sense, but it's up to you if you want the genuine experience or not). Usual standard stuff applies, and good luck with some enemy drops. Not sure about the rest.

>> No.3491447

>>3491034
The PC version is good. It can be pretty grindy and frustrating at times, since you basically have to farm enemies with guide in hand in order to upgrade your equipment, which is ultimately one of the major factors in strengthening your characters.

Tips, well lets see;
>Use a guide to find drops and figure out when quests become unavailable
You don't have to do this if you don't care about beating super hard optional bosses and getting all the characters and preparing yourself for hard mode. If you do care about those things though there's a wiki guide somewhere that has a convenient list of the quests and when they close, and what's required to make them appear.
>Figure out what you want you allies to do and make them stick with it.
The guys you have with you will say stuff like "should I focus on wizard shit or fighting shit" and your options will be "A, B, or both"
What both actually means is they'll ask to equip HP and AP accessories, Mystic means Intelligence and Mystic Offense/Defense Accessories, and Combat means Strength and Combat Offense/Defense Acc. If you tell them to do one thing and then change your mind it will basically fuck them up and they won't know what to do anymore. It's pretty easy to figure out what's best by looking at the stats on their weapon and the balance between their strength and intelligence.
>Pick a weapon. That is now your weapon forever.
There is invisible experience for Wield Style, Weapon Type, and each Category of actions that you can perform in battle. (i.e. there are skills for Katanas, axes, Dual Wielding, Herbs, Restorations, Hexes, Power Wield, etc.) If you use katanas for half the game then switch to straight swords, that's gonna be a big handicap to your damage, assuming hitting things was part of your plan. For combat I'd recommend a Large Axe, Dual Mace/Hammer, or Spear. For Mystic, Mace or Dual Mace is pretty much the only good option. For Defense, both Mystic and Combat, literally every other option.

>> No.3491527

Not exactly retro, but I've been thinking for a while that Lightning Returns sure takes a lot from SaGa (and a whole lot from NieR, too). You have:
1)No level ups (you get stronger with gear, with a focus on getting materials for it in NG+ or by completing missions), in general limited grinding as it can screw you up.
2)Free roaming, no set order to do main quests, and a focus on exploration
3)World changes around you as time progresses, which causes missable sidequests, and in general quest triggers aren't too clear and you can fail them.
4)Limited monsters in a species: kill too many and they will go extinct after throwing a super-strong one at you, ecosystem adapts encounters based on alive species
5)Battle attacks determined by a grid system where you set skills dropped by enemies, not too far off from Unlimited's grid (but much less frustrating, arguably).
6)Enemies that get stronger as the game progresses. Including bosses.
7)If you mess up too much, you might have to restart (although, to be honest, unless you REALLY suck at time management, this shouldn't happen on normal or easy, although hard mode is less forgiving).
8)NG+ only, but you can upgrade skills/gear with assorted stuff. Hope the monster that drops the item you need isn't extinct! It's actually a nice touch to leave it to NG+, adds depth to the game by giving you something new to do.
9)Kami is a dick and you beat him up for his bullshit at the end.

Regarding NieR, by the way:
1)Solo protagonist on a quest to get back her sister
2)World that is very clearly dying, general mood is the same, ruins abound
3)Monsters popping out of fucking nowhere
4)The sidequests. Lightning and NieR are both very deadpan about most of them, but still do every task from the most mundane to the most difficult ones. They comment on their tasks and banter with their companions about it. Sidequests often turn out to be much darker than initially seem and are appropriate for the dying world setting.

>like if you just had tiles tossed into the inventory after a quest that would have been fantastic
Most of the panels are pretty easy to get if you know what to do though, it's not really a problem unless you grow impatient or are playing for the first time.
And that would be a bit difficult to implement into the role playing anyway, how can you explain having a character have an ability sitting there somewhere and have them learn it later? It doesn't make much sense.
I'd say more than making an inventory for panels make panel growth more streamlined, as in once you get a certain panel(s) you have better chances of getting some other panel related to it, for instance, if I have something like lvl 5 Axe/Sword/Spear panels on the same character why not give me a fairly good chance of getting a Weapon Meister panel just by virtue of having them around? Same with other panels like Magic Blender and something, it would make the game shorter and you wouldn't even need to abuse Tetraforce for perfect character building, or just remove Tetraforce altogether so I just have to grit my teeth and deal with it instead of having it around to trigger my autism.

Or better yet, just make the panel choice pool bigger so you just have more choice at the end of a quest, because I'm fairly sure that would solve a lot of problems like yours without needing a radical change.

What I personally found tragic was the maps being reduced to chessboards, I like Unlimited a lot, but having that kind of tabletop exploration really kills a big part of the fun for me, luckily they learned their lesson and implemented the field skills a lot better in Minstrel Song and the SaGa 2/3 remakes while also keeping normal exploration.

FFXIII is decent if you look for something story focused and with decent gameplay, at least it's got grinding caps and it never gets too easy, and once you're done with it, you unlock some postgame sidequests and then you're done forever.
XIII-2 has ton of optional stuff and it's like Chrono Trigger, or rather that DS rpg about time travel, with tons of paradoxes and shit. Story is so confusing that even main protagonists are confused (then again, it's heavily implied that their own time fuckery is fucking with their memories, so there's that), but is pretty coherent. Most problems in that game come from the fact that the protagonists have plot-induced stupidity, in fact. In a sense it's somewhat similar to SaGa Frontier II, you pop up at certain moments in the time line to do certain things. Except it's because of time traveling. Mostly the same battle system but somehow worse because the third slot is recruitable monsters who only have one role. Which somehow is a pretty SaGaish element. The main saving grace of the game is that the antagonist is the most charismatic guy to ever grace a Final Fantasy game. He's absolutely fantastic, really. Needless to say, he does it for his waifu. And his plan is a complete success, in fact one good thing of the game is that it ends with his total victory and a cliffhanger, because while the protagonists had no idea of what they were doing the whole game, he had a very clear idea of what he was doing. The game also has a lot of non-canon/joke endings, like Chrono Trigger. Superbosses are ALL DLC, so endgame/postgame might feel a bit lacking if you don't buy them. This was tentative and doesn't happen in any other game of the series.

Lightning Returns is basically NieR starring Lightning. Combat is heavily redesigned, and somewhat fun, even challenging. Exploration and time/resources management based. Adds features on NG+, which makes it very replayable. All the stuff >>3491527. [cont.]

There's also a few gems like Soul Sacrifice Delta and the occasional PS3/PS4 ports which aren't all that bad, Blazblue ChronoPhantasma Extend, Guilty Gear AC+r and other minor games like the Musou/Atelier ports run pretty well too and don't look too shabby either, then there's Shiren games, a few good indies and so on.
And most importantly, it's the SaGa machine of this generation, even more so now that you can put homebrews in it and can emulate GB and SNES, the only games you can't play on it at this point are the DS remakes(for now), Unlimited and Minstrel Song.

It feels more like Last Remnant to me, that Midare Retsugekka is also very reminiscent of the Last Remnant version of it, but I guess the biggest reason might be the motion capture animation.
Also, there's those characters in Urpina's cut which look a bit like generics, and you don't really see characters wearing helmets in SaGa instead of showing their faces, that too reminds me a bit of Last Remnant since there's quite a few people with helmets there.
The field's graphics and dialogue UI are straight out of Minstrel Song and Unlimited though, the difference being that Unlimited used drawings while Scarlet uses the 3d models.
One little thing I've noticed is that there's probably going to be no difference in Katana/Greatswords as Leonard uses Midare Retsugekka with a greatsword instead of a Katana, so the weapon sets and mechanics might be more reminiscent of the old Romancing Trilogy design instead of the hybrid system from Minstrel Song.
I'm very curious about that new unnamed martial art waza Leonard uses, I hope they go back to the Unlimited system on that, so characters have access to different sets based on their weight.

>What? Thats such a cool detail that i wish minstrel song had it

In Unlimited Martial Arts are affected by weight in more than just damage, weight changed the actual Martial Arts you could get, if your character is a lightweight you get access to the Lightweight line if you have MA panels on that character, if your character is a heavyweight you get the Heavyweight line but you must not have MA panels, of course, you can also influence weight by adding or removing equipment, both lines have their pros and cons, lightweight MA are designed for HP damage while heavyweight are for LP damage and are also harder to learn due to the lack of panels, unless your character is a featherweight like Roy you'll probably need to sacrifice your defense since good armor pieces are usually heavy and tend to make many characters fall into the heavyweight line, while in heavyweight you'll sacrifice speed and learning rate. It's been a long time so I'm probably forgetting something as well when it comes to weight and martial arts, but it was a very clever system.
>weight seems to only affect turn order
Not quite, weight affects your Surge rate as well and in some rare cases, also affects your accuracy.
Basically if your character doesn't have four times the STR value of a weapon's weight value your accuracy with that weapon decreases.

Iirc the wrestling waza in RomaSaGa 3 were also influenced by character and monster weight in some way, or maybe it was a cross calculation between a character's SPD and the target's weight, but I'd need to recheck the wikis for that, it's been too long since I raided the wiki for info and you can waste days looking at mechanics.

Unlimited has many curious balance things in waza, iirc Reverse Delta, the strongest Axe waza came from a relatively low damage line, Time Lapse I think, while certain lv3 arts like Night Crossing turned out more powerful than lv4 arts like Splinter Pierce in terms of damage potential, or maybe I'm remembering it all wrong.

It has 6 hits but really low damage and unremarkable growth. Multi-hits are great for LP damage because each hit is a separate chance for damaging LP, but damage is just damage and more hits doesn't necessarily out-class harder hits with better growth; though this depends on how much strength and skill your character can get and how much defense your enemy has.

I'm pretty interested in Scarlet Grace. I'm hoping that, since there are only 4 playable MCs this time, they'll have a bunch of special events for their plots.

>All the characters seem really interesting.
Can't wait to play as Leonard and tell all those noblemen about dem crops and shit.
He's also the first main character in the series that is simply a peasant, not a tribe or clan member or a thief, a literal who farmer, though maybe there might be more to him as the story develops.

>I'm hoping that, since there are only 4 playable MCs this time, they'll have a bunch of special events for their plots.
Sounds like they're going all out for this, having no dungeons and only four MCs means they're really concentrating on events and variations, possibly endings as well.
The fact that "everyone" we meet can become a party member also hints at a very large cast this time, this kind of premise really reminds me of Zill O'll and Lunatic Dawn Odyssey, both are focused on events on the map and cities and have either no dungeons or just a few short ones, I guess this time we're in for some serious story roleplaying, the PV also shows that the world map is quite big this time and seems packed with places compared to the usual SaGa standard of having a few cities and dungeons.

I'm a bit worried about two things though.
How are they going to handle encounters? in the PV there weren't any enemy icons on the map so I guess enemy encounters will happen in locations somehow, I hope they won't go back to random encounters, that would be a step back in design for me.
My other problem is travel, I always appreciated SaGa's fast travel, but with this kind of design it seems exploration is going back to the usual move on the world map business, I don't know if I can bear it considering the world seems pretty big, but then again there could be fast travel implemented in a menu or something.

I guess the stream this sunday will clarify both of these points, I hope they also explain what that gauge down there does.

it'll be based on branching decision trees, like
>Lets fight them all at once
>Duel them one on one
>Run away for now
or
>take the left path
>take the right path
then spawn monster formations, let you determine how to deal with them

You won't be forced to fight all the time, but you'll also be rewarded for taking on big chain battles and huge numbers of foes

imagine it like a DM who says okay WHAT DO YOU DO??? then proceeds to give you a different outcome depending on your answers

if Scarlet Grace is good, as i'm sure it will be, then yeah probably. It'll probably never really catch on with most western audiences if the series hasn't already. SaGa is too hard and complicated for us simple-minded western folk, they just want a cheesy anime shonen story that like ff7 or ff10 because :lol gameplay? who rpgs for the gameplay?" ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

>> No.3503949

>>3502543
Hopefully so, maybe the recent trends in RPGs will make SaGa a bit more palatable for the general taste, though nowadays turn based RPGs aren't really that popular to begin with.
Maybe all those Dark Souls meme gamers will be drawn in by the learning curve of the series, though I'm not sure if that's a good thing.
>>3503335
To this day I can't fathom the RPG western hypocrisy, people bitch and moan about japanese RPGs being too linear, simple and story driven and then when a game like SaGa shows up they bitch and moan that it's unpolished, incomplete, ill designed and lacks a strong story and go back sucking FF's cock, and it's a vicious circle that goes on and on since years.
No wonder games like Metal Saga bombed and they don't even bother localizing the other MM games.

Anyway, it's about 5:20 AM in Tokyo, the SaGa stream begins at 15:30 in JP time. those who have a NicoNico account better get into the stream earlier, otherwise check Square's Youtube stream channel.

I still can't believe we're getting a new mainline title and not a remake, it's been so long, too long.

The western reception to unlimited SaGa was such a travesty. To be honest, I'm somewhat glad that SaGa isnt mainstream. Anything that gets mainstream success in the west always gets subverted and turned into a frankenstein's money making monster

Same here, I'm sad about the reception, but at the same time I'm glad it has a small fanbase, Kawazu isn't the guy who'd lower the bar to pander to people in order to make money, especially for his own brainchild, but it's better to have a small fanbase that is genuinely attracted to the series' charm instead of street cred and trends.

Damn, Rodriguez, it took me a while to figure him out.

Isn't it cool how they kept it for all games when it comes to bounties?
Satoshi Kadokura is pretty good at making short earworms, Metal Max wouldn't be the same without him.
I personally love MM2 battle theme and Bias Brad's theme, you should check out the arrange album if you haven't already, it's solid gold

If there's a thing MM does better than SaGa is exploration, SaGa is pretty good, but MM always did that better, though Scarlet seems very good on that too now that we're back on the overworld map.
I still fondly remember exploring the subway on MM and ending up in the Devil's Towers only to end up exploring more and more, such a good game.

>> No.3505252

Itoken says that due to not having to work on dungeon music he especially concentrated on the character's themes
Kawazu says that Leonard 's design is inspired by Yankii
Kawazu confirms that there's different last bosses like Frontier
Battles take place on the map with pop up cardboard icons as well as being selectable through locations
Battle system works on a new AP system, so commands consume AP now, the turn count is really reminiscent of Last Remnant too
Block was on the waza list so it's proof that the waza design is probably going back to Romancing standards instead of having built in defensive waza like Unlimited/Minstrel Song
Combos have been changed into All Out Attacks, kinda lame, but maybe there's more to it
Kinda missed this one due to crappy connection, but the growth system seemed variable stat based like Frontier
Seems you can fast travel through the menu too, which is good
At one point Nakamura talked about the sheep flock near the village of Uromir, Kawazu said that those are tied to an event and the flock can get bigger
The cast seems absurdly huge

The cardboard aesthetic is really nice too, though it's pretty evidently a heads up to Legend of Legacy.

I'm pretty much sold, this is a RPG for the decades.

>how do they stack up to that one?
As>>3505115, MM games are really similar in structure but they expand on content and the basic gameplay a lot, giving you many more options, many more tanks and also a kind of neat class system for MM3 and the MM2 remake.
Personally, I really like MM3, more than 2, though the first MM/Returns will always be my favorite in terms of scenario and world.
The game also share a continuity, MM2 expands on MM's plot, MM3 is kind of self contained and I don't know much about MM4, Metal Saga is also implied to take place after the first MM but due to copyright issues you should consider it a gaiden of some sort.
>>3505102
>how important is it to level your second team
Depends on how you play, using your other teams mean that the others rest and regen WP, JP and LP, it's good if you're playing the game for the first time because if you don't know where to go you can let other people rest and keep on exploring without going back to inns.

I haven't noticed your post Anon, refer to>>3505252
I think I got all the notable info from the stream down, most of it was chitchat between Nakamura and Kawazu on how Scarlet compares to previous games, Kawazu himself was pretty tired and raucous.
The battle animations look much better than the ones shown in the PV, if there's one thing I'm a bit wary of is loading times, they're not long but seems pretty frequent if you fight a lot.

>Wat do?
Whatever you want to do, the world is free for you to explore, you can go meet the elemental lords, go start the quest chains in Estamir, go to the frontier, hunt for Silver's loot in Oapu, go to Valhalland and so on, sink your teeth on whatever you want and see if you can chew it, if not go do something else, wander around, explore. The SNES version is a bit clunky though and the gameplay is pretty slow and archaic, so don't be surprised if you level up your skills and weapons slowly, it's pretty normal. If you can't deal with it, go play the PS2 remake.
What I suggest you to do is, make money, sell jewels and buy yourself some good equipment ASAP, especially weapons, since you've already read FAQs you should know how the weapon system works, so it's vital to get good stuff early as to avoid grinding for waza.
>Already got Bluestack and 2 waiting for me
I wouldn't suggest you to go straight to 2, it raises the bar quite a lot compared to most games in the series, unless you're the kind of guy who likes very strict gameplay and lots of punishment, you'd better go play 3 after 1, it's much more forgiving and streamlined than 2.

It's because the game has chain battles giving you a chance to save between them, and if you save, have no backup save, and the next battle is unwinnable for you, well, forced restart.
And there's the infamous Riovanes roof battle which is after a very tough boss (compared to the previous bosses, at least, it's still cheeseable like the rest of the game with a billion different setups, but will mop the floor with you if you're playing typically or if you've been neglecting your MC), which you REALLY want to save after, and is a rescue mission where you have to defend one character. Enemies are fast and can use a 100% efficient, death status attack. There's a million ways to cheese that fight, but if everyone in your party is slow? They kill the unit you have to protect before you can even act.
