This is a myth. The only sense that they're weaker in is that you might not have maxed out their EVs, which is circumventable via box glitch, which can happen by accident.

In later gens, there is no downside to, say, using 95 Rare Candies to max out your starter before the first badge.

My friend wasted his Master Ball on Lance's Dragonite.

I remeber mistaking the guy in front of Oak's Lab for a Snorlax. I also got stuck in both Cerulean City and Vermilion City for a long ass time.

I was playing Yellow, and I often released my Pikachu just to hear the bitch cry. Then one time I accidentally saved by switching boxes right after, and Pikachu was by far my highest level Pokemon at that point.

I'm playing a Pokemon game for the very first time. Blue, to be specific.

I'm trying not to use a guide so I don't have the gameplay ruined for me on my first run, but is there anything especially important I should know? I know TMs can only be taught once so I've been afraid to give those to any Pokemon since there are stronger Pokemon later on in the game. I also know that evolving Pokemon ASAP isn't always the best idea due to early evolution stages learning moves faster. That's about it though.

I just got to Vermillion City (have two badges), and my team right now is a Bulbasaur, a Rattatta, a Spearow, a male Nidoran, and a Sandshrew. I have a female Nidoran tucked in a box. As of right now my Bulbasaur and Spearow are by far my most leveled Pokemon, and they've both been very useful. Sandshrew and Rattatta are pretty decent to. But the two Nidorans I have are fucking weak as shit despite being about he same level as the Sandshrew.

I don't really want to spoil it too much for you, but just know that some types are just plain better than others, and the game is an unbalanced mess. It's a beautiful unbalanced mess, but it's an unbalanced mess nonetheless.

Also despite what the game says about Ghosts being good against Psychic pokemon, Ghost type attacks don't work on Psychic pokemon. It's probably a glitch/fuckup because every other form of media based on the first generation games (Anime, TCG, the stupid little TOPPs trading cards, etc.) has Ghosts being good against Psychics, but they just aren't.

Also if you're playing on an emulator, you can just download a rom of Red version and rename the save file to that version's filename and the game will run perfectly fine, but with that version's exclusives. They're essentially romhacks of each other.

Generations I-III all had the odd system where all moves of a particular type were either special or physical. This had weird results, since Gengar, a special attacker, was Ghost/Poison typing, meaning all of its STAB moves were physical.

Conversely, most Dark-type moves looked like physical moves (Bite, Crunch etc) but it was a Special type.

Anyways, the elemental punches were all Special types, so Alakazam could put them to good use.

*Catch more Pokémon.
*Rattata isn't great. It evolves early and learns Hyper Fang but it'll lag behind halfway through the game.
*Nidoran is probably worse than Sandslash because its moves aren't as good. Poison Sting has low power and Horn Attack doesn't get STAB, and it's also more frail than Sandshrew. That said, Nidoking is more useful overall than Sandslash. I'd recommend choosing one or the other, since they're both Ground types, but you can easily beat the game with either.
*Don't worry too much about evolving your Pokémon later. They might learn moves later but it really doesn't matter. The boost in power and survivability is usually worth more than learning a stronger move earlier.

You should experiment with a few Pokémon, although be aware that in gen I many of them are actually shit, such as Voltorb not learning any Electric-type moves and Scyther only learning Normal-type moves. Movesets in general are far better in Yellow, but the game tends to get more balance in gen II, unfortunately.

Also, get a water type. Not only do you need Surf eventually but you'll also need something that can use Ice Beam.

That said, the game is really not very hard. Even the Champion of the game uses Pokémon with extremely crappy movesets.

That's doubtful. Not only can you not afford that many escape ropes at that point in the game, Charmeleon evolves at level 36. Wild Pokémon in Mt. Moon go up to level 11 or 12.
