So over about a year, just from thrift stores, I've picked up:
>Sega genesis, 1 controller w/ Sonic 2: $20 total
>N64 with 1 controller & THPS1: $20
>SNES with 1 controller and F-Zero (later picked up Super Mario World, Link To the Past, Goof Troop) about $40 total
>FF1 / Castlevania 1 & 2, Mario Golf for $2 total

Why aren't you thrifting, /vr/? also which of these sells for the most?

>> No.3406634

sounds like you're doing very well, I'm envious.

I'm unfortunate, my only thrift shop is a goodwill, and they now go through their donations and sort out known 'easy money' items like video games to be sold online at inflated prices.

Yeah Goodwill has absolutely caught on to their retro and hipster shoppers and driven prices up like crazy unfortunately. Pretty much all the consoles I got months ago before it got bad. Last one I got was the Genesis where I had to rig it a little (removed the 5$ tag from the controller and plugged it into console so it was only $10 total, had to buy AV cable from ebay)

But it's still possible, I got an N64 controller at the goodwill the other day for only 5 bucks

I wonder how my fellow Argentinian anons manage to collect for consoles, i've been wanting to collect for Ps1 and SNES for a while but i just know i will have to get games from America most of the time.

So far from thrift stores, I've only gotten:

-Gran Turismo 2 with original slip cards for the mail in orders and manuals, as well as Gran Turismo 1 in it

-Pac Man 20th Anniversary
-Croc

And just some PS2 games with their manuals, but that's not /vr/. My thrift store sucks.

Atari branded 4 button bluetooth arcade stick $2
~30 loose Skylanders $7.50
4 wireless Xbox 360 controllers $10

Took a pass on such "retro" gems as an Atari Flashback 2 console only for $12, common loose Game Gear and VCS carts for $6 each, Hong-Kong made LED football and soccer tabletops $20 each etc

There's 2 goodwill stores that I still manage to find deals at.

This year I've found
3 gamecubes 14.99 each.
3 first model wii ranging from 5.99 to 19.99.
Pokemon Pikachu edition .50.
ps2 fat 9.99.
Gba 2.99.
And last trip I found 15 CIB n64 games for .99 each.

This was a good year for deals.

not many good deals this year, went to my local Goodwill yesterday and saw Pokemon Blue and Crystal sitting behind glass, when I asked how much they were I was told $39.99. They also had marked up a PS1 that had been sitting there half a year at $10 to $20 because one of the workers added a generic power cord.
I'm not even seeing the stuff I was surrounded by a year or two ago, no dance pads or guitar controllers, hardly any sports games even (though I did see one N64 maddon loose on the shelf at the same Goodwill)

If I drive about two hours I can get some damn good thrifting done, last time I went with regrettably little money and still came home with a shopping cart of Atari 2600 carts for >$10, a handful of PS2 games at a quarter each (Future Tactics, GH rocks the 80s), Desert Strike for $3 and even a couple 360 games for >$10 each. They had a bin of consoles though, which was equal parts wonderful and cringe-inducing as I saw a Genesis somewhere near the bottom supporting 2 dozen Wiis and PS3s.

>> No.3407457

I dont have many good sources for older games or consoles around where i live, but there's goodwill and the occasional antique store.

In the last 2-3 years I have gotten from goodwill-
2 sega saturns, with cables and controllers.
1 nes
6 original playstations
2 ps2s, one fat, one slim
5 sega genesises
1 dreamcast
1 gamecube

I've found a few snes, nes, genesis games, but nothing super noteworthy. I found a copy of mortal kombat on the genesis still with the box manual and a poster inside.

I've also found tons of really good condition n64 controllers in different colors.

I spent probably less than $75 for all of that over the years. I think the most expensive thing i got was the gamecube for $5, it was covered in mud and dirt and i wasn't even sure if it was going to work.

Maybe a third of them didn't work when bought, but i mostly buy them to just repair them and fix them up. I just love working on old electronics like that.
Me and my friend have a ritual of going to the 2 goodwills in our area and searching for old tech, games, books, etc every other week.

I tried starting a thing where I fix up a old console and give it to a kid that wants to experience some older games they didn't get to grow up with... it hasn't been successful, but i like the feeling when someone takes one and enjoys it.
Has goodwill just gotten wise to old consoles and games? I used to always be able to find at least something, but for the past several months we haven't found a single thing... I feel like they're taking the games and consoles and selling them online at a premium or something.

also fun story.

an elderly couple in my neighborhood was having a garage sale.
They had an atari 2600 still in the box, still had the tape and everything on it. Never opened.
The elderly woman said their daughter had bought it on the cheap for her grandaughter back in the day for xmas. (im guessing the 2600 was on its way out and they just got one)
They had forgotten completely about it being hid in the attic. It sat there for years. They found it a few years ago, but never cared to open it.
They wanted $9 for it. Nobody bought it. I live in a really rural area, so nobody probably gave a crap.
I asked them to hold it while i went to get some cash for it. Even considered giving them more for it.
While i was gone the daughter came by and boxed it up with everything else they didn't sell that day, and sent it off to goodwill....

You're an idiot. If people weren't willing to pay the prices resellers ask they'd get discouraged and lower them. As long as someone says a copy of Earthbound is worth 100+ and a buyer thinking it's not only a value but an investment says
>Ok and if I get tired of it/need money think of how much I can sell it for!
The market will abide.

The exception to the rule is sudden interest. For example back in like February I picked up a loose Pokemon Red cart for 20 usd. Granted it was trending at 30 but, that's just the market. Checking ebay now its lowest price is 40+ to 65 due to Pokemon Go getting normals to nostalgia over something they'd otherwise ignore. If it's accepted as OK then it will become a permanent thing despite the high production of these games and their availability. Call it artificial inflation. But again if the consumer is willing to pay it's not totally the reseller's fault.

Pretend it's the 90s and euro-you has a laserdisc player and a big blurry chinese rear projection TV that you use to impress plebs even though you watch your scart crt when it's just you. You'd hook the composite ins up to the outputs of the LD and the outputs to the big screen so the signal goes from the player through the CRT and terminate in the big screen just like the loops on your PVM (probably)

Bulllllllshit. Maybe you picked all that up for $2 a piece since April 2001. There's zero chance of a copy of Lunar on Sega CD to have remained in the wild at that price point.

its called a flea market, people make the prices they want to sell it at.

i got that lunar and shit last weekend from someone i know who sets up and sells games and systems dirt cheap.

Shooting myself in the foot here, but there are seriously good deals out there; just the other day I missed a guy selling two 3ds systems for cheap, but the real prize was the 5 copies of pokemon games for ds-3ds(all mainline) for only $5 each(worst case scenario, you could flip those back on gamestop(lol) for a cool $100). I also missed some guy selling a binder full of OG pokemon cards like blastoise, charizard, etc. for -one dollar- each. That left me quite salty.

I called only an hour after it was posted, and of course one of my local "buddies" snatched it up.

This happens to me all the time, especially at the local flea markets. There are a few resellers that'll buy everything in site, even have guys hold stuff for them. Just to turn around and sell it same day at whatever they see on eBay.

Literally every retro vidya i see at my local goodwills they have behind glass and you have to bid on them at their auction site. As for thrift stores, everything is ebay prices and they never budge. It fucking sucks. I just really hate seeing the things I love, become nothing more than a shitty investment money making scheme for others.

So here's a weird thing I found at goodwill today. Guess someone brought their old playstation stuff because I also saw controllers with it but no system or games. Guessing another customer or (more likely) the staff grabbed them already.

Go to every sale. I go wednesday thru sunday. Never judge from your car always get out and always ask for games. Be persistent and specific.

Best deal I got this year lady said she didnt have games when i asked. Then I rambled off my list. "Nothong like atari, sega, nintendo, playstation or xbox?" Then she got her husband he had am atari 800. I asked again and found out there was 2600 games. He brings those out and I see theres an nes. After more persistet questioning I walked away with an hd graphics genesis, snes, n64, 89 games for those systems some boxed and the first 50 nintendo powers. I paid $40. This was at a sale with no games just old lady glassware and being told there were no games the fiest time I asked. She assumed I only wanted new shit.

People attending sales will hwar you ask and often tell you if theyve seen games. Best deal last year a guy heard me asking amd saod he had games for sale. Got a top loader nes, slim ps2, a few good games for $30. Sold the copy of contra in that lot for $30.

Go to garage sales multiple times. I went to a sale twice this year. First time no games second time there was a tub of individually prices nes games and a boxed genesis. Individually priced. I picked out a few I was interested in totalling $22 haggled to $15. One of the games was a gyromite with an adapter. Sold for $25. I usually only sell a few things to break even then I use other doubles as give aways or gifts.

Practice haggling. Many people dont care. Ive picked up about 3 $5 snes since last summer. A $2 n64 with atomic purple controller. Just get out often, ask, be specific, ask a few times listing what youre looing for. I found 3do games at a sale with nothing but baby clothes out.

more advice, not him though

always ALWAYS check CDs, you can find 3DO or TG-16 CD games or more in them. always ask for old games too, that will usually get people to say something like "oh, you mean atari/nes etc etc"

IMO owning physical copies of games in this day and age, with the proliferation of flash carts and ODEs, is a pointless endeavor. It's like owning your own copy of a book when the exact same one is at a library. We're past the point where ownership of legit games is mandatory for a great number of games. If you're buying new games to support the companies that make them, then that's great. But if you're buying something that hasn't been made for 2 decades and won't go to original devs then don't bother. Just find a reasonable alternative to play and enjoy those games. Don't buy into the cycle of stupidity.

that does make sense, there are a TON of ways to play anything 6th gen and back. my wii is the defacto emu system when i want to play something

i have been collecting like this though since 1991, so i at least have a reason, its also fun for me, gets me out of the house for a few hours and i get some cool games.

i do hate when shit doesn't go to the OG devs, but really, they already got their money back in the day, why should they get more since they probably are dead (bullfrog), broken apart (rare) or gone insane (konami)

try craigslist, has a section for garage sales
look for local flea markets and get there early

>> No.3420581

Most of you will probably already know this, but if you're on craigslist and see a post like..."ps3 + game- $140(this is really popular)", and they -only- have an email, google that email. Over half the time you'll find it's a scam email being posted all over the country, if you find nothing then it may be legit, but proceed with caution, and a backup email account.

Driving around is best. Sales posted on facebook or craigslist have been picked thru by resllers and sharks. The sales not listed online are a safer bet. You want to be buying from moms and grandmas. Theyll think theyre ripping you off if you pay more than a few dollars. If youre lucky you wont have resellers in your area. I have several store owners I compete with. I hear about their great deals weekly. I work nights and get up later tho. But ive found great shit on sundays in the late afternoon that was some how missed. Those people just want it gone and let it go for practically nothing. I have good luck on thursdays not so many people able to g sale during the week. I have a regular route i drive that hits every intersection in my town.

The problem is they sell the good shit and think the dregs will suffice to keep a physical location open.

Same shit some goodwills are doing with shopgoodwill. Theyre ruining their retail stores to put everything online.

Goodwill went bankrupt, salvation army closed down last year, only value village near me is cased by multiple hoarders. I recently went to value village and saw a 3rd party n64 rumble pack with a missing battery cover on the shelf. As soon as I put it down some guy comes over and puts it in his cart. How am I supposed to compete with these shitheads?

The best this year I got was Spyro 2 and Tony Hawk 2. Cartridge games are non-existent.

I've had some decent finds in the past. I stopped going though because good will and salvation army are crap and put all their good stuff online now. The one good thrift store around me is in the most depressing ghetto area of town so I don't really like to go there often.

The rest of the copies are in the trash. It's been twenty years. The one and only possibility is that some prototypical forever-alone owned it since the late 90s and died without having literally anyone who knew or cared about him at all and this flea market guy got called in to clean out the house where he most likely decomposed for some weeks.

Goodwill doesn't need retail locations to sell anything above garbage level. Their challenge has always been proper appraisal. You only find good shit at their retail locations because the schmuck the had sorting shit didn't know what they were lookin at. Makes finding games a pain because they tend to catch on that games sell. Still, they could basically shut down a bunch of retail locations, keep their donation centers open, and still make bank because their value is derived from people just giving shit away.

Things I've bought at car boot sales this season (since April):

>Boxed mint SNES £20
>N64 with OoT and ram expansion decent condition £5
>Wii with everything £5, put homebrew channel on it give as a cheap gift.
>25~ common wii games which I like £1-2 each
>7 gameboy games, £1 each, including pokemon blue and red.
>3 cheapo gamecube games
>40~ PS2 games £1 each or so.
>20~ DS games I like
>2 crap NES games 50p each.
>Amiga 1200 £10, WORKS!
>200~ PC games, I'm weird I like collecting PC games in the jeweled case.
>All the big box City Builder Series (Caesar 3, Pharaoh) 50p each!
>80~ PS3 games £2-3 each
>A bunch of other games for PSP, PS1, dreamcast, etc, nothing worth mentioning.

I also buy a lot of old books, fruit, veg, meat and household stuff at the carboot.
I have spent about £1200 on carboots excluding food I buy if you include the petrol costs. If you want bargains I recommend ebay or local garage sales. Car boots are heavily scalped over these days and at 6.30am everyone is a reseller in some capacity. I have seen 0 SNES or N64 games this season except one reseller who priced way above ebay.

Charity Shops:

>Absolutely fucking nothing, and that's come from a man who collects PC games.

But theyre not.

Their primary mission is to assist people with job training and shit. At least that is what they state.

I think part of the confusion comes from the old days where used goods were always cheap. every yard sale, used goods store, flea market, etc, had cheap prices. So when Goodwill opened stores and sold used goods, they priced accordingly.
Now, with ebay and the like, and a shift in people's mindset (likely because most new shit is shit from china that will break in a week or its expensive as fuck and well made), used goods are worth more and more. People realize that piece of pyrex from 1980 in a thrift store is more durable than a pyrex dish from walmart.

Goodwill realized this, over a few years, and adapted their prices to raise more money for their actual mission.

Their problem, which a lot of people share, is thinking the FMV for shit is the same locally as it is nationally. Also, not knowing how ebay pricing works. Hell, I see people in the game collectioning community misusing ebay all the time.

Say this in another 30 years and youll be accurate.

>> No.3421795

Didnt say goodwill needed retail locations.

I was talking about that local game store that only had common shit.
They are likely selling all the good shit online so they make the most off it.
That kind of behavior will kill a local game store environment/community.

Lets say they get a copy of a game that sells for $500 on ebay.
They could put it in the store for $400, what theyd make on ebay after fees and shit, and itll sit for weeks/months.
Or they can put it on ebay for $500, sell it in less than a week, and get that $400 now.

given time, they will start doing that with any and all games that are worth more than $50.

Eventually the people that come in to look at games will see the same shit week after week. Where their regulars would come in every few days checking out the new acquisitions, theyll start coming in every week, then every few weeks.

Sure, maybe the regulars wouldnt buy that $400 game, but they'd buy a soda and candy bar to snack on when they chatted about games. or theyd pick up that common game they were missing for a few bucks.

Now the store sees that the physical location is losing them money, so they start raising prices. Now no one comes in and they shut down and only sell online.
