So there were a lot of charming songs on gameboy games, but I'm looking for songs that just sounded far better than they had any right to be given the technology. This one always stuck out to me

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LlokRNcURKM

The amount of differing sounds here is amazing, the strength of the composition is pretty wild. And that wobbly "dream-like" effect starting at the beginning really adds a lot to the tone

I've always loved the ending theme to Final Fantasy Legend. There's something haunting and unsettling about it, which fits the tone of the game pretty damn well, and generally is just a very different feel than most you get from most video game music, especially for its time.

For shame, /vr/, although to be fair, this is my first time here, so I don't really know how often music-related threads pop-up here, so excuse my rudeness. I don't really have a particular song from the games' of the OG Nintendo handheld that stands out like the OP suggests I provide, but I DO have a remix of the song you posted for comparison (which you can download for free here: http://gameboy25.ocremix.org)

I don't know the policy about posting download links on this particular board, but there you are, and here's that remix as well:

I felt the need to post this before reading any other suggestions in this thread, so I'm off to catch up. Hope you all enjoy! (for the record I'm not affiliated with OCR in any way, I'm just a big fan)

You're thinking of the NES.

The Game Boy doesn't have a triangle wave. It has two pulse waves, a custom wavetable channel, and a white noise channel.

From the sound of it, that song's percussion is done only with the white noise, which is fucking incredible.

"Chiptune" seems to have been bastardized to an umbrella term for "all kinds of bleep bloop music" and I hate it.
I'm a purist and my inner autist goes into rage mode whenever I hear a """"chiptune"""" that has the whole square-square-triangle-noise thing going on but then a real guitar or real drums or fucking VOCALS get slapped on top of them.

The only real exception I can think of is something like

One problem is that there was no dedicated sound hardware in the GBA.
All sound is processed by the CPU, somewhat similar to the N64.

This lead to many devs opting for using more CPU time for visuals, rather than sound.

Also, that song you posted sounds like a remix of one of Purple Motion's songs.

Noteworthy composers for me are:
-Alberto Jose Gonzalez(The last 2 Turok games in particular do some crazy wavetable magic. If you pull them apart using the GBS to FTM converter you can give it a look)
-Manfred Linzner
-Johnathan Dunn
-Thomas Mogensen (Some of his work that's not on youtube is crazy)

Haha thanks. I'm really into C64 and Game Boy chiptunes but my interest is mainly historical and technical in nature. A good suggestion for anyone hunting for good Game Boy soundtracks that aren't just a playing on your nostalgia (Pokemon I'm looking at you and your ear wrenching wave tables) is to look through a .gbs archive. I suggest this one: http://gbs.joshw.info/ It's the most complete archive that I know of. There's an android app called ZXTune that can easily access this archive.

For anyone who wants to do that be warned. I trudge though hundreds of .gbs soundtracks, for every 100 nausea inducing sound tracks there might be a decent sound track and for every 20 or so of those you'll find a hidden gem. Be prepared to hear the same shitty licensed sound engine used over again, but that makes it so much more worth it and satisfying when you find a good one. Plus it makes you appreciate good stuff that you might have otherwise not put much thought into.

Here's some more interesting sound tracks I've found, but I wouldn't call them my favorites.

You know, now that you mention it, how permissive is the YouTube API?
Maybe we should ask someone from /g/ to make a bot that:
>uses PUGBSA (http://snesmusic.org/hoot/gbs/)) as a database
>Takes GBS, extracts all songs as WAV with one loop + fadeout
>Parses WAVs to MP4s with black background and game name and track number in white text as the 'video'
>Auto-uploads to a dedicated channel
>Makes a playlist of each GBS where each track is a video

Would it be feasible?
I mean, listening to authentic GBS' is great but it's such a chore when there isn't a catch-all solution for listening to them.

That guy who was a guest on retro video game audio? I don't really know too much about Koshiro but I did remember that mention from that guy who was a guest for the Alberto episode. Do I know you by chance haha?

>except well maybe

Intro/Area5 and Vorstadt are definately my favourtes but the rest of his music is really good. Someone really popular like Alberto G. always has quite a few songs that I think are rather boring. The entirety Stello Doussis's work on the Game Boy is at the very least above average, though it could be me just being a fan boy over his work. He does some crazy stuff if you pull those .gbs files apart. C64 styled instruments, full ADSR(some how no loud pops) and some neat wave table magic. Probably all due to the sound engine he made that's tracked from .xm files.

Probably because they're not direct game rips but taken from the officially released soundtrack which added the reverb to create a stereo sound. I'm just guessing on that last part though.

The interesting thing is, this and O'leary Football Manager are supposedly the same game, but you find two seperated soundtracks for them on snesmusic. Both are very similar in style, but both lack credits and I can't seem to find any on the internet. Could be a game without a credit screen.

I never understood why the sound in Link's Awakening was all mono.

>inb4 "game boy only had a mono speaker"
So what, sound was stereo internally, and the system had a stereo output jack. Not utilizing that is a waste.

>inb4 "stereo chip tunes sound like shit anyway"
Not necessarily. Music of Seiken Densetsu 1 (elsewhere Final Fantasy Adventure/Mystic Quest) was all stereo and sounded great, it would have lost some of its quality if it were downmixed to mono.
