Confirmed for not even understanding this subject at all. I know it's hard to understand, but symptoms like wobbling textures, seams and draw distances / fog are not a guaranteed occurrences in the console hardware. You can get around these problems but some developers chose not to. A lot of games don't have wobbling and near sighted draw distances, but the problem is nobody bitches those games and instead concentrate on being bitchy about the games that do.

Video not related? You didn't see the mountain texture on the left do a massive twitch?

Yes, you can get reduce perspective errors through subdividing and tessellating large surfaces into smaller triangles, but you're essentially burning through the polygon count for no other reason, which is guaranteed to reduce the draw distance you could have otherwise had.

>> No.3397843

>>3397837
It's my webm and it's an example of a game that has good texture mapping for 1996, has polygonal detail, not blurry, no texture wobbling, and as you can see the draw distance is nothing to bitch about. It may not be the greatest looking game of all time, but it sure proves my point that Playstation doesn't inherently display these symptoms all the time, it's just that bad developers don't give a damn about doing things properly. Have you ever seen a Crash game filled with fog masking draw distances (minus stage hazards) and jumping floors? Probably not.

>>3397840
I saw a texture shift there as an anomaly but I don't see symptoms of wobbling. If it did, you would see a lot more than just that one piece of rock. Yes you are burning polygon count to reduce the symptom, but hey that's why the Playstation is capable of drawing much more polygons. You might as well use it to cancel each other out.

>> No.3397918

>>3397827
Additional division per every pixel was a significant price to pay for perspective corrected texture mapping.

Developers used what the machine advertised: http://problemkaputt.de/psx-spx.htm#gpurenderpolygoncommands

You couldn't change how internal texture mapping worked, you could only hack around it with tessellation in specific areas or other dynamic geometry replacement.

They expected polygonal models in games to appear near the center of the screen and at the distance, surrounded by 2d decorations and backgrounds. Free movement in 360° 3D worlds that causes nearby polygons occupy a significant screen space at sharp angles was far from being a universal gameplay mode. It was a common mis-prediction of the time that also affected other hardware, like 3DO.

It doesn't cancel each other out. You might need to use a dozen or more times the polygons on a comparable surface to perspective-correct texture mapping to eliminate distortion.

I thought the issue stems from the Playstation lacking a Z-buffer. Without knowing your depth, you can't compensate for perspective. You can't just simply add a Z-buffer, so texture shimmying will always be a thing.

Yeah, I don't see the point of some guy using anotehr emu to post 4k pics. They can work as comparison pics I guess.
