Except he actually enjoys games and has some experience with retro games when they were new. But I see what you mean.

You're also right with James. He's a nice guy, but wouldn't trust anything more than a legit 2 minute opinion of any game he would review. Movies were always his primary passion.

He's not been doing that since like forever. I'm saying this because I enjoyed some of that fanboyish nonsense every once in a while in his pre-patreon videos. Now it's either random words with R E V E R B ad nauseam or that ultra obnoxious r-zone shtick. Those are deal breakers. I mean it was kind of fun when he did that for the first time with Extreme G but he's done more than enough.

Lando quotes out of nowhere never fail to crack me up though, even though they get predictable the more he uses them.

Arino is an actual comedian and has his moments but he's very japanese and you have to accept it. A lot of the episodes are shit, some are very good though.

James is a totally mixed bag. Some of his stuff is golden, most is bad. Its not really any secret he's way more into movies than games. I like it when he's talking about movies, not so much with games.

Its like with Gordon Ramsey. If he's just there being passionate about food? Fantastic. If he's hamming it up for the camera on a reality show? Im out.

I started watching metaljesus's videos few weeks ago, and they are pretty good.

Game Sack is good stuff, most of the time.

Once in a while they go full on bias, usually if it has to do with the SNES, Joe has a real hate on for SNES music and anything with reverb in it. I find reverb adds a nice charm and atmosphere to some games (example: Illusion of Gaia, FF4, etc) and for some reason he likes to hate on it's "orchestra" sounds, I dunno what's up with that.

It not about being a professional actor. You dont need to be an actor to come off as an authentic person. Their quips and humor are forced and they dont talk like normal people would. They quickly rush through each game with a few sentences of simple nitpicking. They try to sound like experts but they dont know shit and they dont sound like normal guys either. Thats the biggest problem with Gamesack is they do incredibly short "reviews" even lighter than Mark from Classic Game Room. Then in each episode they cover an absurd number of games.

The only episode of Gamesack I liked was "lets make a youtube show" because it was pretty on point with the parodies.

the main problem with patreon it puts too much pressure on content creators. imagine going from getting paid by faceless advertisers to being paid by people that actually view you demanding constant content. its overwhelming pressure and they just seem to break. they get too worried about not upsetting their viewers and meeting all the promises of their goals and people bitch and moan on their videos about not being as great. it's a bad choice to go with patreon unless someone finally comes out and says i wont be making daily or weekly videos, they will come when they are ready. but i have yet to see a quality youtuber who opens one up to stay true to the work they were doing before.

you can see what patreon did to mark for a while with his who defeatz videos. he just.... started making any video possible. he seems to be taking criticism seriously now after he dust off the negative feedback and went back to doing his video game showcase videos.

the game chasers also started to make dumbass videos a lot more when they got a patreon. and now jay just uploads him unboxing free shit he gets from fans daily it seems on his own channel.

it seems the only ones still making money doing shit on youtube without being really big are the tech tubers who are just vaguely disguised marketers who pretend they are tech ethunanists and pretend they used to work in technology when most have degrees or backgrounds in marketing, sales, or filming. those guys are getting paid directly by tech companies to shill their products disguised as reviews

Arino has the most fun, amusing content.

James is good when you want to see games from the perspective of an average dude who liked them a ton as a hobby but doesn't live and breathe nothing but game media. AVGN stuff doesn't make me laugh uproariously or anything but he's a chill guy and I like him a lot.

I really really dislike the CGR guy. Most videos I've seen by him he seems largely disinterested in what he's talking about, and it doesn't help that he has a really annoying way of speaking,

That could be due to translation and cultural differences, though. It frequently feels that some of the jokes and the wordplay is either intentionally not translated or watered down (and I believe that the team behind those translations has their reasons for all of that). You also have to keep in mind that while it's all comedy and video games, it's also a job with a hierarchy, and Japan is known for upholding said workplace hierarchy in 99% of corporate settings.

That's the problem with the Internet video fad and the people who consume them: you get better rewarded for pumping out regularly scheduled and frequent garbage than you do for putting out less frequent by higher quality material. James would be better off dropping AVGN and just releasing three GameGrumps-style videos a day. The majority of his fan base wouldn't care enough to stop watching and he'd easily get several thousand views per video.

While not really retro, their video about game remakes was fucking awful. Some of the games they defended (the Tomb Raider remake, really Dave?) are fucking trash that exemplifies what's wrong with modern games.

Other than that, I still like the rest of their content. And anyone complaining about their wooden delivery or non-existent "analysis" is a retard. Arino is not in the same category as the other two, and I don't mean it in a patronizing "He's an actual celebrity and they're not" kind of way.

What he does is a "challenge" comedy show in which he tries to beat games, meanwhile visiting game centers and goofing around in silly corners that are tangentially about videogames.

Meanwhile, the other two are about reviews. Sure, done in an entertaining way, but the only thing they have in common is the retro motif. I don't think they're comparable because they're different things. If you like one, it doesn't mean you'd like the other.
