yeah but if it isn't a 1 to 1 animation and it uses a different number of sprites then you'll have to alter the code and somehow i get the impression you haven't modded doom before and hoo boy mark's spaghetti code is no place to start

get http://slade.mancubus.net/index.php?page=downloads and use it to open project brutality, locate and export the sprites for the two guns

open brutal doom, find the sprites for the rocket launcher and chaingun, verify that it's a 1:1 replacement with no extra pieces

if it's a 1:1 replacement then you can just delete the old sprites and put the new ones in, just be sure they all have the same names

if it's not 1:1 replacement then you'll have to alter the animations in the decorate code which will either be awful or easy, but nowhere in between

I was browsing the wad archives and I found this: https://www.wad-archive.com/wad/Space-Hulk-DOOM-1

It's a half decent Space Hulk wad.
The maps are pretty easy to get lost in, and are somewhat slaughtermap like (you are purging a space hulk after all), but it's fun so far!

There are minor texture issues, but it's nothing too bad.

It's kind of a product of the limited tools you have to deal with them.

In games like The Legend of Zelda you have like 20 different items to creatively shoot or maim the dungeon's puzzle boss with.

Doom would be kinda ridiculous if you had 20 guns while were only good in one or two situations each.

The Icon of sin is the only one which really uses this concept, which is cool, but there's not really too many ways to adapt this without it simply becoming shoot the boss until it dies when you only have a selection of guns for tools.

I'm glad I had good input, they're actually really fucking terrifying now

The only things I'd really change is to make their blood black, maybe make their visibility pulsate (if there's a render option for that), and possibly leave some kind of very slight ghostly trail as they move (maybe a dissipating trail after the projectiles too).

They're really terrifying monsters now, all they need is some finishing touches!

Doom is a horror game the same way Army of Darkness is a horror movie; it couples horror elements with gratuitous action, and though it's focused more on the action it still works well together.

In the case of Doom 64, it's more like Evil Dead 2, where there's still plenty of action but the horror elements are more prominent.

Inside ZTest is a copy of Zandronum 3.0

nigger, there is no such thing as a 'final update'.

one day you'll wake up, oh you will. Fulfilled with the rarely experienced sense of acomplishment. You just uploaded a new version of your gameplay mod or map. this was to be the final version, all sectors done, all bug-free. the thread goes on happily as ever, people post screenshots of your majestic work for others to see. Say they're having fun.

then you boot it up and you find yourself actually having good fun, giving yourself a fair chance for once to enjoy the thing you worked so hard to achieve, and be proud of your efforts which only recently came to fruition.

And then you see it.

There it is, clear as a cigar lit in pitch darkness. A stray pixel on your gun. The muzzleflash doesn't align perfectly. The offsets somehow make your gun look wimpy as it's being fired. The firing sound no longer feels embelishing and empowering. It's too weak. It's too strong. You've been using TEKWALL more than you should have. You didn't put enough FIREBLU in. Sooner than later, you realize you've been using nothing but this one weapon in particular during the last 6 or so maps, out of the 6 you've made for the mod, for a grand total of 6 barons killed in 6 shots in 6 seconds within each. What an oddity. Your maps suck, your weapons are shit, the entire doomunity hates you now.

Long before you know it, you're booting up SLADE and GZDoomBuilder. You should. You have to, you need to, you ought to, you must.

'Easy enough', you stutter to yourself. Open the .wad file. Set some values. Add some shit. Put more monsters in. Play some music while you do it. Maybe have dinner as you do so. Spaghetti with meatballs.

Then you find yourself unhappy with the map. You begin contemplating scraping the gun altogether. At what point did this come to happen you don't know. How could you have known. How could anyone have known.

You delete the map. A fit of improper disgust, agitation and hate inbound. A violent press of a button and it's gone. You export the PNG sprite files onto your desktop. You touch them up. The process is slow and painful, you've developed carpal tunnel. You freak out, this has never happened to you before, not ever, not now. Oh god. You startle and quickly get up from your desk chair. You stumble the table slightly, but that's more than enough strenght to cause your carefully fixed dinner to spill over.

The spaghetti, the meatballs, the tomato sauce. It's dead. How could you.
You awkwardly direct your view towards your now wasted eats.
You are aware you are but the husk of a man.

'That's okay. I-I can make this work' you mutter to yourself, in a perhaps somewhat helpful sense of delusional optimism. You can't. A quick glance at the walls show all the textures used have begun looking strange to you somehow. You feel dreaded. This can't be. You hover your mouse over the .wad files to open your 3 weeks worth of work and labor of love. You feel a cold, sharp wind run through your spine.

The walls. The ceilings. The floors. The buttons. Lights. Lifts. Doors. The grating. The glowing sectors.


FIREBLU, everywhere.

Well I tried it on E1M1 and E1M2, on M2 it really changes the map, once you open that dark maze, and they hear you, all those rifts will come flowing out of there slowly. It's also the fact that you slowly hear the whispering coming closer through the walls, that is REALLY effective.

Conceptually I think we've made a pretty great monster here, changes I like:
>black blood, makes it feel more distinct and supernatural than the meaty demons are
>phewing whirling noise following the projectile, clues you in that something is going on when it shoots at you from an angle that you can't see, and makes you kind of jump because you know they're here now

Changes I'd suggest
>It's not quite immediately apparent when they die, maybe add brief a flashing pulse or something when they die, like a black colored light effect, which uses a slight black dynamic light (or I guess a shadow) for coolness
>flickering and 50% transparent afterimage trail when they move of some sort maybe (I don't actually know how good this would look, this is an idea I just had)
>afterimage effect on the fireball (create an inert actor using the same graphic as the ball which spawns and sits in place and then despawns after a few tics, the ball creates one of these actors once every tic)
>put a bob or weave flag on the ball as it moves, weaving left and right or something, making it look more erratic and less clean, also makes trajectory a bit less predictable

I'm really loving these things.

I always felt more drawn to the horror aspect of the game. Doom 64 really gave me a taste for that. The original did too despite the focus on action. I've always wanted to see techno horror done right(read: the way I want it done). Its not enough to just slap some robot parts onto a demon or a human. The strogg where almost right. I want to see simple machinery designed to maim and kill, attached to still cognizant humans screaming and crying that they cant control themselves. Spring-loaded legs that work like a runners prosthetics and look as crude (important that it not be high tech) as the legs seen on the original spider mastermind. Why? Because Satan. Cybernetic dudes with shotguns feels boring and generic. Nothing out of place or alarming to the player. I want confusion. Panic even. I certain inexplicable brutality to it.

Maybe that's too edgy. I dunno. I'm just not phased by the usual cyberdude-with-gun thing. I guess its not meant to be horror anyway. Now that I think about it, System Shock also got pretty close.

imo its the combinations of different monsters that makes doom great. Usually the combination of projectile and hitscan/firearms.

Having to dodge projectiles while dealing with priority targets like hitscanners is always good. target prioritization on the fly, combined with movement and trying to take cover, hit the powerups/health etc, is always good.

Just gave it a test run, and it's really barebones considering it's a source port that was ported right off a PSP exploit. No custom controls even, but at least native screenshots are allowed unlike some commercial games.

god fucking damn it. i just came here to say FUCK plutonia. playing through it for the first time and keep dying on level 3. it's at that level of difficulty that's not cheap but still requires tons of playthroughs. even though i know what i have to do, the dynamism of gameplay ensures it never works out just right. i straight up just quit out of frustration which i hate to do, making me more frustrated. my personal rule is to not save during the level, ie; start-to-finish completion, but i even broke that and saved halfway through. no matter: still got rekt.

They always look better when I paint, and I did a little bit with a pencil to make his pipes and teeth more defined, but ultimately didn't bother with fine tuning everything since I need to have things looking good right out of the box and if it's all moving then it won't matter if it isn't some perfect piece of art.

More ammo pickups, this time for the alien energy weapons.
Not happy with these for a couple different reasons.

One is the obvious size in pixel disparity (compare with a properly-sized pickup on the right), but this can be safely chalked up to "I'm not an artist, save it for an actual artist to work with".
The other is the fact that the colors the weapons use is green, but the ammo pickups have glowing red bits.

I COULD just change the red bits to green, but the health pickups (again: see the right) glow a big ol' bright glowy green right there, and I'm worried that'll cause a conflict of visual information.
I COULD just change the weapon's colors to red, but the primary-fire-default-infinite-ammo weapon is already colored red.

I'm probably overthinking this a lot (who in the hell identifies ammo for a weapon based on fucking color?), but I do like having some modicum of consistency.

Wrong, E1M6 does it around the exit, doors close and lots of monsters come out of the walls.

Not an overwhelming amount, of course, but still a bunch, and quarters are close enough that it's quite dangerous.

Really, I think Doom 4 is pretty good for what it is (even if not perfect), I hope they make an expension where there's less focus on locked in arena battles (I'm fine with if they have a few), and add more incidental encounters around the maps.

zdoom mp is a bit finicky, but it's doable
you both have to load the same mods (in the same order), use the same version of the engine and open a port (5029 in udp? check on the wiki)
then you give him your ip, start the game in host and he'll join using it

the issue with Doom 4 isn't the amount of enemies at all

its the levels which are nothing like classic doom's levels but instead just a linear series of rooms where you fight waves of enemies in each one
and also the enemies themselves which feel neutered and they're just not really scary the same way they are in classic doom
also for some reason they replaced all the hit scan enemies with 5 different variations of the same enemy 4 of which pose basically no threat to you ever and one which is just very annoying but still not not very dangerous

Some guy named Nicodimus makes maps for Doom 4 using heaps of coloured blocking volumes as if they were BSP, it's really cool. Can't imagine how long it would take as you have to eyeball placing everything in Snapmap.

Anyway, I'm working on a small personal mod meant for a Hideous Destructor playthrough. The short of it is that I'm making it possible to play all of DOOM I and II in one long progressive playthrough and changing the music assignments so that I can use the music pack from the PSX Doom TC.

I finished the SSG art earlier today. Now all I have left is the chainsaw and BFG. Not sure what I'm going to replace the chainsaw with, though. Most everything has been just art and sound replacements, but maybe I want to try scripting a melee weapon to replace it.
