With the controller it made sense, but I still never got used to it.

My dreamcast vision would have been
DVD tray
Same controller shape with control scheme identical to original Xbox
Web browser built in with ability to update
Mouse hooks into back of keyboard
No gimmicks
More online games

More 3d big world rpgs
More games aimed at adults

I think that could have saved the system. If they could have put a did tray in and sold it for under $300 it would have sold more. One thing that helped ps2 sell was for $300 you could get a dvd player(average of $150) and a game console. A solid Web browser too would have cut out a computer for some people too.

Playing the dreamcast over VGA is really nice. It is the best picture possible, and auto scales to 4x3 on a TV. This is why Xbox controllers rock. Microsoft just took Sega's design with the DC controller and upgraded it with a second stick. I perfer the S over the Duke though.

The X360 and X1 controllers are worthy successors to the DC and Xbox controller. Just make sure you use a wired variant of either if you like resting your fingers on the back!

If you use a wireless variant of the X360 or X1 controller, a huge battery pack blocks your fingers from resting and forces you to grip them around the handles instead.

Shittiest console of that era. If you dished out the asking price on launch day I feel nothing but pity for you. In fact, if you bought one at all when it was still being sold in stores you should look at that as one of the worst decisions you've ever made in your life.
It had a few good games (I remember playing a good version of Marvel vs Capcom on it with my cousins), but overall the library and the exclusives were shit-tier the likes of which I hope are never seen again.
But what really puts the nail on the coffin are the fucking horrible controllers. They were a slight step up from the even shittier Saturn controllers, but still extremely shitty. There are old Atari-era pong consoles with better controllers than that. Sega thought it could get away with it because of "muh lcd screen memory card gimmick".

I don't really want to go into too much detail but I hate most Sega consoles because of almost every point I made in:
>>3390351
For example, the Genesis controllers, although better than the Dreamcast, are still large, clunky and with many useless buttons. The Genesis also had shitty exclusives. Two of their iconic series, for example, are Sonic and Golden Axe. Both horrible games, with very superficial gameplay. I could go on with every console they released, but this is just to give you an example

I'll admit most of the time Sega consoles had slightly better hardware (in some aspects), and they had better 3rd party ports (especially during the Genesis era, for example mortal combat and street fighter come to mind), but these are hardly redeeming qualities.

>I think Nintendo is going down the road of Sega
I keep hearing people say this, but aside from a few small coincidences I don't really think their current situation is much akin to late 90's-early '00s Sega at all. In fact, so far it's a lot more stable than that really.

>but aside from a few small coincidences I don't really think their current situation is much akin to late 90's-early '00s Sega at all.

Well, I would argue that the situation for consoles in general is tougher today than it was back then.
Even back when the Wii came out there was still a large market of "casual gamers", but now because of smart phones, casual gamers are not interested in owning consoles, and we all know hardcore gamers prefer pc's. Which leaves an ever-shrinking market share for consoles, both home consoles as well as mobile.
Both Sony and Microsoft can survive as companies if their consoles flop, but Nintendo can't. They depend too much on selling their consoles and then selling their games, which they do not license to anyone else.

Sorry if this shit isn't exactly retro, but I just think it's interesting how we this all could unfold.

1-The controller is really uncomfortable. It doesn't "fit" very well on the hands;

20 y.o. Anon chiming in with my own opinion here.

I've played on PlayStation since I was a couple years old. PSX, PS2, PS3, moved to PC towards the end of the PS3's lifespan in 2012 after the only console-exclusive game I played anymore (Dark Souls) got ported to PC.

I still fire up the PS3 every once in a while just to play Demon's Souls for a nostalgiablast (was the first Souls game I played back in 2010), but that god-awful controller bothers me.

The issue with the DS1/DS2/DS3 as a grown adult is that they're all too small to comfortably hold by resting the controller on your hands-- they feel like they're going to slip off unless you death-grip the grips. I do not have big hands, and I'm not fat either. The DS4 solves this issue of size, but does not compensate for it in the right way... they didn't make the body of the controller larger, they made the grips larger....

>MFW

The 360/XB1 controller on the other hand is perfect because it's big enough for a fully-grown, NORMAL human being to rest the controller in their hands without having to death-grip it due to its larger size. On top of this, it's a superior controller for playing any game that emphasizes the left stick over the right stick (think 3D Platformers, Racers, etc) due to the placement of the left stick going where your thumb naturally rests.

Many Dreamcast games have to be ripped/downsampled in order to fit onto a CD-R.

This causes their cutscenes to look like Sega CD and their music to sound like SNES.

I would prefer to buy the original in that case, but when I'm at the game store I have no way of knowing if the game would fit on a CD-R or not.

It seems like the few games I burned to my leftover colored discs play fine right away, but the silver ones need the console to "warm up" before they start reading consistently, usually I put in a colored dis and let it run a good 20 minutes before trying another disc.
Is there an explaination for this? Was it a fluke or are the silver ones just trash?

Some discs are better than others, some times burns aren't good, sometimes it's the program, sometimes it's the drive. I've had mixed results. I remember reading once that there are really only 3 cdr manufacturers, companies buy them, label them, package them, and sell them as their own product. I also read dream cast doesn't like one manufacturer in particular.

I usually use image burn, and have 4 different brands of cdrs on hands. One time i tried multiple discs, multiple burn speeds, and eventually had to try a different program before I could get it to work. It's annoying, but if you're looking for cheap 6 cdrs are still cheaper than a lot of the good dream cast games.

I have one and I really like it. Solid construction but my only complaints are the dead-zone around the joystick is rather large and the buttons are not as springy as I would like. I still play Third Strike and MVC2 no problem and pull of great combos with ease.

I don't get the question, "relevant". Any game/console is relevant" to the person playing it. A console being modern and mass media and with money doesn't make it "relevant".

I've heard the D-pad is shit on that. Should just use a Saturn->DC adapter instead.

Is that Records of Lodoss game any good or is it just a Diablo clone?
