From what I understand you have to master the kill move, and always kill your rival in each race as fast as possible or else they'll always be faster than you.

It seems to be just about gitting gud with that and keep trying.

exactly that. In F-Zero GX that tactic isn't needed but in X it's a must, specially in the fastest tracks. Ironically it's easier at the most difficult circuits because the CPU sucks at cornering.

I've kind of figured that out, you get three kills and it refills the boost, you have to be boosting constantly to get to the podium spots. it is insanely hard though. I want that 3rd startup screen. I don't think I have the fortitude to accomplish this though.

No way, at least in my experience. F-Zero GX in master difficulty is quite easy for me (the story mode is another thing...). But Beating some of the cups in F-Zero X still give me problems, and I have to resort to side-attack rivals.
