Hello /vr/, what are your thoughts about the Wario Land series (including the spinoffs Wario: Master of Disguise & Wario World)
Which one was excellent and mediocre for you?
You think Nintendo will revive the franchise?

>> No.3379042

The first is the most memorable for me though I played 1-4 and World (though the 4 and world are not retro).

No, I do not think Nintendo has any future plans for Wario outside of Ware games. The fact that the traditional Wario outfit was an alt in Smash goes along with this.

If we're talking not-retro, Shake It also deserves to be mentioned.

My favorites are still 1 and Virtual.

Also pic related is great.

In all seriousness, Wario Land is a fucking gem collection. This is a matter of opinion, but here's my classic Wario Land power ranking:
VBWL > WL > WL2
Note: I Never played WL3 and WL4 is awesome but not retro

Wario's Woods is super fun as well. Mario & Wario is fun for the first few levels but it gets real infuriating real fast.

My favorite game series.

WL1 has some of the comfiest, most adorable designs in video games I've seen. It's akin to Flintstones, which I love purely for design.

I love everything about it. Mt. Teapot secret world. Pirate moles. Pirate ducks. Throwing coins. Just pure eternal love

WL3 is also simply amazing. WL4 had moments of similarly brilliant design

December 31, 1999.
Which is really arbitrary.

Wonderswan Color seems to get a pass, despite releasing nearly a year afterwards. However, the GBA followed 4 months after the WSC and is barely tolerated.

Let's try not to stir up drama though. That just makes things worse for both sides of the argument.

When it got announced, I nearly lost myself in a fit of ecstasy. But it turned out to be another Nintendo outsource, like with Yoshi's Island and Artoon…

I couldn't take it. I realize times are different, Wario World wasn't a big hit and all that… But fuck, Nintendo. Why did you need to make a quick cheap cash grab game out of a Wario franchise?

Was it the same as with Super Princess Peach? Why just milk your glorious past with such shitty sequels? Who'd benefit from it? Who the fuck greenlit that project, developed by some no name studio?…

I sometimes think I was wrong not to buy Nintendo 3DS. Then I remember Master of Disguise and that ANOTHER new Yoshi's Island, and I think: no, fuck that. I'm not falling for this meme ever again.

Its premise was kinda lame IMO: 2D Wario platformer… On a home console? With a gimmicky wiimote shaking feature?… With fully hand-drawn animation?…

I don't know why they even went for the latter. You know, I understand why it was a big deal when, say, Blazblue or KoFXIII went with 2D hand-drawn graphics. But Wario?… Yeah it's cool I guess, but who thought that was a great selling point?

On the other hand, the weirdness and some sort of comfiness of the game was gone. I liked finding the vinyls in WL4 and listening to that weird stuff. I liked the bright levels full of imagination, crazy enemies and all that. I saw several Shake It videos, they had none of that.

And of course the whole shaking thing… Who thought it was any good at all? Who came up with that idea? No offense to the creators, but I see it only as a very, very silly gimmick.

In any case, I just don't see why they didn't make a real WL5 for DS or 3DS—not the half-assed Master of Disguise made by some no name studio. The formula proved to be working for 4 titles, why change anything at all?

>> No.3386819

>>3386809
Nintendo's been on a weird-ass ride since the N64, they just keep trying to come up with wackier and wackier things, and being a japanese company of course they're going to be stubborn and not get with the times

Now that they have a new president or whatever that has more business acumen than creative they might start making sense again, or they may just become Sega 2.0

>> No.3386831

I really enjoyed Wario ware on my old Gamecube but it didn't have much replayability so I didn't play it often

Well, I wouldn't completely agree with this. To begin with, Wario Land II came out in 1998. 3 of the 4 numerical entries in the Wario Land series emerged in this era.

I'd say things started going wrong when they started outsourcing stuff in around 2002 onward, and with DS/Wii. They lost their focus on long established hardcore game series, and instead focused heavily on casual games. In result, they started making shit like Wii Sports, Wii Music, Nintendogs, Nintendo Land and so on, which I feel were really empty and aimed for very immediate appeal, disregarding any skill; a 1-time gimmick like karaoke.

And at the same time, all the revivals they did felt like sacrilege to me… OK, I went past New Super Mario Bros. They game turned better than it could have been. But then they've turned THAT into a new series, and I lost count of the games they've made. Then 3D Land, yet another series in that vein… And of course Smash, don't even start me on Smash.

Then all those needless revivals. Kid Icarus revival, poor Yoshi's Island revival, and the horrible Wario Land """"""""revival""""""" which felt more like a
funeral than anything. Then, New Super Luigi… Nintendo Direct, which made me question if anyone at Nintendo still had any sanity left…

You know, compared to this—yes, Nintendo was more successful in the Wii era; after all, 64DD flopped, and GC wasn't as big as Wii. But at least in N64 times, they weren't hell bent on producing mass appeal karaoke-style games, or reviving every meme franchise they had. What's next? Hogan's Alley vs Duck Hunt U? Ice Climber NX with glorious epic HD open world plot? Super Toad 4D Galaxy?

The fucking state of this company seriously. The only thing they haven't completely ruined in recent memory is Kirby. Going the way of Sega would be a fucking blessing at this point. HOnestly they are risking going Konami and losing all of their talent while getting completely wrapped into portable games for literally no reason but a crippling fear of money and success.

Nah, shoo hivemind.

The only thing SML3 can be dissed for is being a bit rough. It's otherwise a very comfortable little game and makes a great distinction between Mario and Wario style gameplay. The way Wario uses tosses, smashes and tackles to show off his herculean strength, the good exploration and secrets and the pay off with the high value treasures, the way finding loot meant a lot more than "I guess if I get 100 coins I get a 1-up", the different power ups that felt good to use and unique while still teasing the good feelings we had from playing SML2.

If you didn't like SML3 fair enough but "hurr durr can we all agree" shit is some pleb antics. SML3 is objectively good design and gamin'.

What a shit opinion to have.

Which part of it is a "bland Mario clone"? SML3 uses similar graphical assets/level structures to SML2; otherwise it's a different game.

First of all, there's dashing/tackling. Second, the new mechanic of picking up enemies, a lot like goombas in SMW, but better. Third, completely different power-ups, blocks, and tons of other little things like throwing coins, bonus stages and so on, and overall great level design. Not to mention the graphics are great, especially for GB.

My only gripe with the game is some later stages which feel kinda flat or straight compared to the early ones. But this can be said about half other platformers out there.

Overall, it's very different from WL2-4, but still an amazing game, especially for GB.
